An AI haiku generator writes a short three-line poem from a topic, season or mood you type in. Most follow the 5-7-5 syllable pattern taught in schools, and some add modes for humour, romance or seasonal words. Use them for ideas and examples, then sharpen the image yourself. Ten options follow, in no particular order.
A haiku looks like the easiest poem to write. Three short lines, a bit of nature, done. Then you try one and realise how much has to happen in so few words.
That's where a generator helps: it gives you examples to react to and a form to fill. The ten tools below are listed alphabetically and in no particular order, and each description comes from the tool's own website, read this week. For more starting points, my collection of poetry prompts is a good companion.
Haiku tools compared
I checked the free plan column on each tool's own website, as of Oct 2026. Yes means the site says the tool, or a plan or version of it, is free. Trial only means a time-limited trial. Not stated means the pages I read named neither, even where there's a button inviting you to start, so check the vendor's page before you sign up.

Do haiku have to be 5-7-5?
Not according to the Haiku Society of America. It updated its definitions in 2026 and now describes a haiku as a short poem that uses imagistic language to convey the essence of an experience of nature or the season, with a cut that suggests a relationship between two or more images. The definition doesn't mention a syllable count.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
That's the insight most generators miss. They sell 5-7-5 as the rule, which is fine for a classroom exercise, but people who write haiku seriously care more about one clear image and the turn between two parts. If a generated haiku counts perfectly and says nothing, it isn't doing the job.
How to write a better haiku with AI
- Give the tool a small, concrete scene, not a big feeling.
- Add a season word, like frost, blossom or long evenings.
- Generate several and look for the one with two images side by side.
- Cut any line that explains the feeling instead of showing it.
- Rewrite the last line in your own words.
Using haiku generators in the classroom
Generators are good at producing examples to discuss. Ask students which line paints the clearest picture, where the cut falls and which words could go.
They're less useful as a shortcut to finished work. A haiku a student wrote about their own street will always be more interesting than one a model wrote about cherry blossom. Seasonal prompts like my fall writing prompts give them something real to look at first.
Haiku mistakes to watch for
- Counting instead of seeing. Perfect syllables, no picture.
- Telling the reader how to feel. Show the scene instead.
- Rhyming. Haiku don't need it, and it often sounds forced.
- Too many images. Two is plenty for three lines.
Signs a haiku works
- You can picture it straight away.
- Two images sit side by side.
- Nothing is explained.
- The last line shifts how you see the first two.
Do you make an AI haiku generator? Tool makers can ask to be considered for a featured place on this list.
My plain advice on AI haiku
Use the generator to see the shape, then write your own. Pick something you noticed today, a puddle, a bus window, the first cold morning, and let the tool show you three ways to frame it.
Read the result aloud and keep only the lines that make you see something. The rest can go, however neatly they count.
Frequently asked questions

A tool that writes a three-line haiku from a topic, season or mood you type in.
Are AI haiku generators free?
Most tools on this list name a free tool or free version on their own site, as the table shows.
Does a haiku have to be 5-7-5?
Schools teach 5-7-5, but the Haiku Society of America's definition focuses on imagery and a cut, not syllables.
What is a kigo?
A season word in a haiku, such as snow, blossom or crickets, that sets the time of year.
Can students use AI haiku generators?
Yes, for examples and discussion. Check your school's rules before using one for marked work.
Do haiku rhyme?
Usually not. Haiku rely on images and a turn between two parts, not rhyme.
