AI call center software adds AI to a phone support or sales operation: voice agents that answer or make calls, real-time help for human agents, automatic call scoring and summaries after every conversation. Some are full phone systems, others plug into the one you already run. Ten options follow in no particular order.
A busy phone line has two problems at once: calls that aren't answered fast enough, and calls nobody's got time to review once they're over.
AI now works on both. The ten tools below are listed alphabetically and in no particular order, and every description comes from the vendor's own website, read this week. If you're weighing AI against a traditional set-up, my comparison of AI voice agents and traditional call centres is a useful start.
AI call center tools at a glance
I checked the free plan column on each tool's own website, as of Oct 2026. Yes means the site names a free plan, a free version, a free account, a free edition or an open source release. Trial only means a time-limited trial. Not stated means the pages I read named neither, even where there's a button inviting you to try it, so check the vendor's page before you sign up.

The rule that applies to AI voices on outbound calls
The Federal Communications Commission adopted a Declaratory Ruling recognising that calls made with AI-generated voices are 'artificial' under the Telephone Consumer Protection Act.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
For a call center, that means an AI voice agent making outbound calls is treated like any other artificial or prerecorded voice call, consent rules included. Inbound answering is a different job, but the moment AI starts dialling, check the consent you hold for every number on the list.
AI agents, agent assist or quality tools?
AI agents take calls themselves, from simple routing to whole conversations, so they're the biggest change customers will notice.
Agent assist sits beside a human on a live call, suggesting answers and next steps. It's the gentlest way in for experienced teams.
Quality tools work afterwards, transcribing and scoring calls so managers can coach without listening to every recording. Many teams start here, because it changes nothing customers hear.
Questions to ask before you add AI to your phone lines
- Does it work with your current phone system, or replace it?
- How does a caller reach a human quickly?
- Which languages and accents does it handle well?
- Can managers read why a call was scored the way it was?
- Where are recordings and transcripts stored?
- Does it connect to your CRM or help desk?
Signs your phone team needs AI
- Callers wait in long queues. Let AI take simple calls.
- Managers review a tiny sample. Score every call.
- Notes after calls take ages. Summarise automatically.
- New agents need constant help. Guide them live.
Do you make AI call center software? Tool makers can ask to be considered for a featured place on this list.
My plain advice on AI call center software
Start with the work customers never hear: transcripts, summaries and call scoring. You'll learn what your calls are about and where agents struggle, and you won't have changed a thing callers hear, and that tells you exactly which calls an AI agent should take first, if any.
If your business is small enough that a receptionist would do, my piece on AI phone agents answering calls for small businesses covers the lighter option.
Frequently asked questions
What is AI call center software?
It's software that adds AI to a phone operation, from voice agents that handle calls to real-time agent help, call scoring and automatic summaries.
Can AI answer customer calls on its own?
Yes for routine calls, such as bookings, order status and common questions. Keep an easy route to a person for anything complex or upset.
Does AI call center software replace agents?
It usually changes what agents do rather than removing them, taking repeat calls and admin so people handle the harder conversations.
Is there free AI call center software?
Some tools offer free trials. Check the free plan column above and confirm on each vendor's site.
What is agent assist?
It's AI that listens to a live call and suggests answers, next steps or compliance prompts to the human agent in real time.
Is AI call scoring accurate?
It's good at spotting patterns across many calls. Check a sample by hand regularly, and let agents see and question their scores.
