Base44 vs Claude Code: No-Code Builder or Coding Agent?

Choose Base44 if you can't code and want a whole app, with front end, back end, database and login, built from plain language. Choose Claude Code if you work in a codebase yourself. Base44 Starter is $16 a month billed annually for 100 message credits, and Claude Pro is $20 monthly, as of October 2026.

Base44 and Claude Code both promise to build software with AI, but they're made for different people. Base44 is for someone who wants to describe an app and get it. Claude Code is for someone who already lives in a code editor. I read Base44's plans and pricing page and Anthropic's Claude plans page, plus the Claude Code setup and costs docs, and every plan below comes from them, as of October 2026.

Base44's credit plans explained

Base44 calls itself a no-code AI platform that uses vibe coding to build working apps and websites. You describe what you need, and it builds the front end, back end, database, user login and payments.

The Free plan is $0 with 25 message credits a month, 100 integration credits a month, the core features and up to 5 apps. The paid plans, billed annually, are Starter at $16 a month with 100 message credits, Builder at $40 with 250, Pro at $80 with 500 and Elite at $160 with 1,200. You can pay monthly or yearly, and yearly billing comes with a 20% discount.

Base44 says credits are your monthly allowance for AI messages and integration actions, and that exact use varies by the action and the AI model you pick. On ownership, it says you own your code, your data and your users, and two-way GitHub sync exports the full source code to your own repo at any time.

Claude Code's subscription route

Claude Code doesn't build an app from nothing on a hosted platform. It's an agent that works in your codebase, and Anthropic's setup docs say it needs a Pro, Max, Ultra, Team, Enterprise or Console account. The free Claude plan doesn't include it.

Pro is $17 a month with the annual discount ($200 billed up front) or $20 monthly. Max is $100 a month and Ultra is $200 a month, with limits every 5 hours at 1x on Pro, 5x on Max and no 5-hour limit on Ultra. Team standard seats are $20 a seat a month billed annually and premium seats $100. A Console account charges by API token use instead.

Messages versus tokens, and who owns the code

Base44 meters messages. Every request you send to build or change the app uses credits from a monthly pot, from 25 on Free to 1,200 on Elite. Claude Code meters usage in windows that refill every 5 hours and every week, and it has no free plan and no app builder of its own.

The overlap is ownership. Because Base44 exports the full source code to your own GitHub repo, you can start an app on Base44 and hand that repo to Claude Code later, once it needs changes a developer would make. So this isn't always a one-or-the-other choice.

Matching each tool to the person using it

  1. You can't code and want a working app with login and payments: Base44.
  2. You want to try building for nothing first: Base44 Free gives you 25 message credits and up to 5 apps.
  3. You're a developer with an existing project: Claude Code, working in your terminal or IDE.
  4. You already pay for Claude Pro or Max: Claude Code is part of the plan.
  5. You started on Base44 and the app has outgrown it: sync it to GitHub and work on the repo with Claude Code.

My advice on Base44 or Claude Code

If you've got an idea and no developer, I'd start on Base44's Free plan and see how far 25 message credits gets you before paying for Starter. If you're a developer, Claude Code is the more natural fit, because it works on code you already own. And if you build on Base44 first, switch on the GitHub sync early, so the code is in your own repo from day one.

If your team is working out how to build with AI tools and wants help putting it into practice, this is what I do all day. I run AI training and workshops for teams, and help businesses with AI enablement and workflow automation, so the busywork runs itself and people get time back. Most of that work is with SaaS marketing teams and small businesses. Here's how we can work together.
