Babbel Free Trial: What You Get Free, and the Cancel Timing That Matters

Babbel's free trial isn't a free week of everything. Babbel's help centre says registering is free and the first lesson of every course is free to try, so you can see how lessons work before you pay. Full access needs a paid subscription, which renews automatically, and Babbel says you can cancel any time up to the day before it renews.

People search for a Babbel free trial expecting a 7-day pass to the whole app. That's not what Babbel describes on its own help pages. What you get is a free account with a sample lesson in each course, and then a choice of paid plans that are charged up front. Knowing that before you sign up saves a surprise on your card statement.

What Babbel gives you for free

QuestionWhat Babbel says
Is registering free?Yes, creating a Babbel account costs nothing
What can I use without paying? The first lesson of every course
Does the free version have ads?No. Babbel says it runs ad free on purpose
How do I get full access?Buy a subscription from Babbel, Google Play or Apple
Is there a free option inside the terms?Babbel's terms allow trial use for a period Babbel decides, which converts to paid when it ends

That last row matters. Babbel's terms and conditions do cover trial use, and they say Babbel can grant access free or at a reduced fee for a period it decides, and that trial use converts automatically to paid services when the period expires. So if you're ever shown a trial offer in the app or at checkout, treat it as a paid plan with a start date, not a free gift.

How the free lessons work as a test

One lesson per course sounds thin, but it's enough to answer the questions that decide whether Babbel suits you:

  1. Pick the language you need most and complete its first lesson start to finish.
  2. Try the speaking practice out loud, not in your head. If you won't speak in a lesson, you won't speak to a client.
  3. Start a second course, even one you're only curious about, to see whether the format holds up across languages.
  4. Check the grammar explanations. Babbel says its courses are built by a team of over 150 experts and tailored to your native language, so judge whether the explanations land for you.
  5. Only then look at the plans.

Babbel's paid plans and how you're charged

Babbel's help centre says prices vary by location, plan length and where you buy, whether that's directly from Babbel, a partner, Google or Apple. The key detail is how the billing works: for each subscription you pay the full amount for the renewal period in advance. The monthly figure on the prices page is there to show the saving on longer plans, not what leaves your account each month.

  • A 6-month plan is charged as one payment for six months, then renews for another six months unless you cancel.
  • Babbel doesn't offer instalment payments on any plan.
  • Lifetime and gift options are one-time payments with no recurring fees. On Babbel's US prices page, Lifetime was listed at $299.99 as a one-time payment, as of October 2026.
  • Every plan includes all 14 languages, according to Babbel's prices page.

The cancel timing to know

Babbel's help centre says you can cancel at any time up to the day before your subscription renews. Its terms are a little stricter for the first term: they say termination needs to happen no later than 48 hours before the end of the initial service term for its standard paid services. Those two lines don't contradict each other in practice if you simply cancel early. My advice is to cancel at least three days before the renewal date shown in your account, and screenshot the confirmation.

Two more traps from Babbel's own pages. Deleting the app doesn't cancel your subscription, and closing your account doesn't cancel it either. You have to switch off auto renewal where you bought it.

How to cancel Babbel, step by step

If you bought on babbel.com

  1. Log in at babbel.com.
  2. Click the profile icon in the top right corner and choose Profile and settings.
  3. Open Account Information.
  4. Choose the subscription and click Cancel auto-renewal.
  5. If there's no Cancel auto-renewal button, your plan is already set to end, and the expiry date is shown in your subscription information.

If you bought through Google Play

  1. Open the Google Play Store and tap your profile icon.
  2. Choose Payment and subscriptions, then Subscriptions.
  3. Select Babbel and tap Cancel subscription.

If you bought through the Apple App Store

  1. Open Settings on your iPhone or iPad and tap your name.
  2. Tap Subscriptions.
  3. Select Babbel and confirm the cancellation.

Not sure where you bought it? Babbel says the purchase source is shown on your Account Information page and on your original invoice. After you cancel, you keep access until the end of the period you've paid for.

Refunds and the 14-day right

Babbel's terms include a statutory right of withdrawal: where the law gives you one, you can withdraw within 14 days of the contract without giving a reason, and Babbel says you can do it online from your account. Two catches. If you started using the service during those 14 days, you pay an amount in proportion to what you've used. And the terms say that if you bought through an app store, its own rules on withdrawal and refunds apply instead of Babbel's.

If you're weighing Babbel against the free options, I've covered what Babbel includes for free in more depth, and compared it with Duolingo for people who want to know which app makes them speak sooner.

My verdict on the Babbel trial

Babbel is honest about this on its help pages: the free part is the first lesson of each course, and the rest is paid. That's enough to judge the teaching style, so use it fully before you buy. When you do pay, remember you're paying for the whole period up front, set a reminder a few days before renewal, and cancel where you bought it, not by deleting the app. For business owners learning a language for clients or travel, a short paid plan is a safer first step than a long one.

If you decide to carry on after the trial, our guide to Babbel's plans and prices compares the plan lengths side by side.
