Average Retirement Income in the US: What the Official Numbers Say

The average retired worker on Social Security received $2,088.79 a month in September 2026, according to the Social Security Administration. Total household income is higher: the Census Bureau puts the 2024 median income for households headed by someone 65 or older at $56,680, against $97,030 for households headed by someone under 65. Figures are as of October 2026.

Those two numbers answer different questions, and mixing them up is why so many retirement income articles disagree. One is a single benefit check. The other is everything a household brings in.

Here's what each official source measures, and how to use them to sense-check your own plan.

All dollar figures above are as of October 2026, from the SSA and Census pages fetched that month.

Social Security: the floor most retirees stand on

The SSA's monthly snapshot is the cleanest number there is. In September 2026, 55,088 thousand retired workers, a little over 55 million people, received an average of $2,088.79 a month. Spouses of retired workers received an average of $986.68.

An average hides a wide spread. Your own benefit depends on your own work history, so the figure that matters for planning is the estimate on your own Social Security statement, not the national mean.

Household income: what retirees live on

The Census Bureau's annual income report includes a table by age of householder. In 2024 there were 39,290 thousand households headed by someone 65 or older, and their median income was $56,680, up from $56,130 in 2023. Households headed by someone under 65 had a median of $97,030.

Median means half of those households had more and half had less. That makes it a fairer guide than an average, which a small number of very wealthy retirees can pull up.

Why the average and the median tell different stories

Here's the point most retirement calculators skip. Search results quote average retirement income figures that are often far higher than the median, because averages get dragged up by large pensions and investment income at the top. If you compare yourself with an average, you can feel behind when you're doing fine, or feel safe when you're not.

A better test is to compare your expected income with what you spend. The Bureau of Labor Statistics put average annual spending across all US consumer units at $78,535 in 2024, as of October 2026. That figure covers every age group, so treat it as a ceiling to compare against rather than a retirement budget.

What moves your own number up or down

The national figures are a reference point, not a forecast. Five things decide where you land:

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

  • Your earnings record, which is the base your Social Security benefit is worked out from.
  • The age you claim. Check your own statement for the estimate at each claiming age before you decide.
  • Whether you have a workplace pension, and how it pays out.
  • How much you've saved and how you draw it down. A steady, planned withdrawal lasts longer than ad hoc lump sums.
  • Whether you're single or part of a couple. A spouse may receive a benefit too, and the SSA's spouse average of $986.68 a month, as of October 2026, shows how much smaller that usually is.

Working part-time in retirement changes the picture as well, because earned income sits on top of everything else. That's one reason the household median for older Americans is well above a single benefit check.

What about average retirement income by state?

State tables online usually mix sources, years and definitions, so two lists rarely agree. The figures on this page are national. For a state comparison, the most useful step is to price your own housing, healthcare and taxes where you plan to live, then compare that total with your projected Social Security plus any pension and savings withdrawals.

How to estimate your own retirement income

  1. Get your Social Security estimate at the age you plan to claim.
  2. Add any workplace pension you'll receive.
  3. Add a withdrawal amount from savings you're confident you can sustain.
  4. Compare the total with a realistic monthly budget, including healthcare.
  5. Check how withdrawals are taxed: this guide to Form 1099-R explains how retirement distributions are reported.

If you're still working, the Saver's Credit on Form 8880 can lower your tax bill when you pay into a retirement account, which is one of the easier wins for moderate earners.

Verdict

For most people, Social Security is the base, and the official average of $2,088.79 a month, as of October 2026, shows why it rarely covers everything on its own. Use the Census median of $56,680 for older households as your reality check, not the inflated averages you'll see quoted elsewhere. Then build your plan from your own benefit estimate and your own spending, because those two numbers decide your retirement, not the national figure.

Frequently asked questions

What is the average retirement income in the US?

The SSA says the average retired worker received $2,088.79 a month from Social Security in September 2026. The Census Bureau puts 2024 median income for households headed by someone 65 or older at $56,680. Both figures are as of October 2026.

What is the average Social Security check in 2026?

How many people receive Social Security retirement benefits?

The SSA counted 55,088 thousand retired workers receiving benefits in September 2026, a little over 55 million people.

Is median or average retirement income more useful?

Median, usually. Half of households have more and half have less, so a few very high incomes don't distort it the way they distort an average.

Why does retirement income vary so much by state?

Costs such as housing, healthcare and taxes vary by state, and the published state tables often mix sources and years. Compare your own projected income with costs where you plan to live.
