Apple Watch games are small games you play on your wrist with taps, swipes and the Digital Crown, such as puzzles, chess, mini-game collections, text adventures and virtual pets. Install them from the App Store on the watch or the Watch app on your iPhone, and check each listing for offline play before you leave your phone behind.

Apple Watch games are small, quick games built for your wrist. You play them with taps, swipes and the Digital Crown, usually in short bursts: a puzzle while the kettle boils, a few moves of chess in a queue, a story that pings you through the day. They won't replace a phone or a console, and they're not meant to.
I've pulled this guide together from Apple Support and from each game's own App Store listing. Where a listing says the game plays without an internet connection, I say so. Where it doesn't say, I tell you that too, because a watch game that needs your iPhone or a signal is a very different thing on a long walk.
What can you play on an Apple Watch?
Most Apple Watch games fall into a few simple types. You'll find puzzle and brain games, board games such as chess, collections that bundle lots of mini-games into one app, text adventures that unfold through notifications, and virtual pets you look after from your wrist. Fast action games exist, but the small screen suits games where you make one decision at a time.
Some games are a watch version of an iPhone game. Others are built for the watch first and the iPhone app is only a companion. The App Store listing shows which devices a game supports, so check that it names Apple Watch before you download anything.
Do Apple Watch games work without your iPhone nearby?
It depends on the game and on your connection. Apple Support says that when your iPhone isn't nearby, your watch can use a known Wi-Fi network, or its own mobile connection if it's a cellular model, and with that connection you can still download apps from the App Store. With no connection at all, Apple lists things such as workouts, alarms, timers and music or podcasts you downloaded to the watch as still working.
For games, the honest answer comes from each listing. A game whose listing says it plays offline, or that it's an independent app on Apple Watch, is your best bet when the phone is at home. If a listing says nothing, test it before you rely on it. You'll find the test further down this page.
One more thing from Apple Support: Low Power Mode turns off Wi-Fi and mobile data until you open an app that needs a connection. That's handy for battery, but it means a game that wants to sync will pause to reconnect.
How do you find and install games on your watch?
Apple Support gives two ways to get apps onto your watch. Here's the order I'd follow:
- Press the Digital Crown, then open the App Store on your watch.
- Tap Search and type, dictate or scribble a game name, or the word games, or scroll to browse collections.
- Tap a game to read its details. Check that it lists Apple Watch and read what it says about playing offline.
- Tap Get, then double-click the side button when you're asked, to download and install it.
- Prefer your phone? Open the Watch app on your iPhone, tap My Watch, tap Apps, find the game under Available Apps and tap Install.
- Open the game once while your watch is connected, so it can finish setting up, then try it with the iPhone out of range.
Apple notes that some watchOS apps aren't available in every country or language, so a game you've read about may not show up in your local App Store. You can also reinstall games you've had before from your purchase history in the App Store on the watch.

How can you check a watch game plays offline?
Store wording is a good start, but a quick test tells you for sure. Download the game, open it once while connected, then leave your iPhone in another room and turn on Airplane Mode on the watch: press the side button to open Control Centre and tap the Airplane Mode button. Apple Support says Airplane Mode on the watch turns off Wi-Fi and mobile data but keeps Bluetooth on by default, which is why the phone needs to be out of range too. Open the game and play a full round. If it loads, saves your progress and doesn't ask to connect, you're set.
If it stalls or asks for your phone, that game needs a link to the iPhone or the internet for at least part of the play. Leaderboards, Game Center and daily challenges often need a signal even when the main game doesn't. For a fuller explanation of what offline means for any game, see my plain guide to offline games.
Can you play Apple Arcade games on your watch?
Apple's own Arcade pages list iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV and Apple Vision Pro as the devices for Arcade, and they don't list Apple Watch. So for wrist games, look in the watch App Store itself. If you've got Arcade for your other devices, here's how Apple Arcade works when you're offline.
Tips for a better time gaming on your wrist
- Pick games built around taps and the Digital Crown. Fast reflex games are hard on a small screen.
- Watch your battery. Games keep the screen awake, so a long session will drain it faster than normal use.
- Remove games you no longer play from the watch to keep storage free for music and podcasts you want offline.
- Check the minimum watchOS version on each listing. Older watches may not run newer games.

Puzzle and brain games, chess and other board games, mini-game collections, text adventures told through notifications, and virtual pets. Search the App Store on your watch, or browse its games collections, and check each listing names Apple Watch.
Can you play games on an Apple Watch without your iPhone?
Some games, yes. Look for listings that say the game plays offline or that it's an independent watch app. Apple Support says the watch can still download apps on Wi-Fi or its own mobile connection when the iPhone isn't nearby.
How do I download games on my Apple Watch?
Open the App Store on the watch, search or browse, tap the game, tap Get and double-click the side button. Or use the Watch app on your iPhone: My Watch, Apps, then Install next to the game under Available Apps.
Are there free Apple Watch games?
Yes. Several games in this guide are free to download, such as WristJoy, Offline Games All-in-one and 10 Minigames for Watch and Phone. Some carry ads or offer in-app purchases, so read the listing first.
Why won't a game show up in the App Store on my watch?
Apple says some watchOS apps aren't available in every region or language. The game may also need a newer watchOS version than your watch runs, which the listing shows under compatibility.
