Best Tree Service Software: 10 Tools for Arborists

Tree service software keeps estimates, job scheduling, crew dispatch and invoicing in one place, so nothing lives on scraps of paper in the truck. Tree care specialists are built around arborist work, while general field service tools cover more trades. Choose by the size of your crews and how much happens on site.

Tree work doesn't fit a standard job sheet

Tree work isn't like most home services. Jobs vary wildly in size, you're often quoting from what you can see from the ground, and one storm can rewrite your whole week overnight.

In 23 years in marketing I've worked with plenty of trades, and the ones that grow are the ones who send the quote while the customer still remembers your visit. Software won't climb the tree for you, but it can stop the paperwork eating your evenings.

Specialist or all-rounder?

Built for tree care. ArboStar and SingleOps talk about arborists and tree companies specifically. If most of your work is pruning, removals and plant health care, start with these.

Green industry tools. Others, such as LMN and Service Autopilot, are built for lawn care and landscaping firms, and Arborgold covers lawn, tree and landscaping work together. They make sense if you also mow, plant or maintain gardens.

General field service platforms. These cover many trades with scheduling, dispatch and invoicing. They're worth a look if you want something widely used and you're happy to set it up for tree jobs yourself.

What tree jobs need from the app

  • Estimates on site. Can you build and send a quote from your phone while you're still standing in the customer's garden?
  • Photos and notes. Tree jobs are hard to describe in words, so check you can attach photos to an estimate and a job.
  • Crew scheduling. Can you see which crew and which kit is where, and move jobs when the weather turns?
  • Invoicing and payment. Look for invoices that go out as soon as the job's done, with easy ways for customers to settle up.
  • Repeat work. Pruning cycles and plant health care bring customers back, so reminders and follow-ups are worth having.

Storm call-outs deserve their own test. When the phones light up after high winds, you need to log a lot of enquiries quickly, sort the urgent ones from the ones that can wait, and get crews moving without losing track of who's been promised what. Ask every vendor how their tool handles a day like that, and whether you can add and reorder jobs from a phone in the cab.

Crew size matters too. A two-person outfit wants something simple enough to run from one phone. A business with several crews needs dispatch views, job costing on the office side and a way to see who's working where.

Licences and permits come before the app

Software organises your business, but it doesn't make it legal to trade. The U.S. Small Business Administration's page on applying for licences and permits says most small businesses need a combination of licences and permits from both federal and state agencies. If you're in the US, check what applies to your own business before you set up your admin tools; if you're elsewhere, look up the rules where you work. That's not legal advice, just the order I'd do things in.

Once you know what you need to keep on record, you'll also know what to look for in the software, such as space for licence details on estimates or job notes.

My advice for tree service owners

Book demos with two specialists and one general tool, and bring the same real job to each: a removal with awkward access, say. See how long it takes to turn that into an estimate, a scheduled crew and an invoice. The one that feels quickest on your phone in the yard is usually the one you'll keep using.

If you're not ready for software yet, start with free quote templates so every estimate at least looks consistent, and get your invoice payment terms written down before the busy season.

One more thing. If you also run lawn or garden services, a green industry tool might save you running two systems. If trees are all you do, a specialist will speak your language from day one.

Frequently asked questions

What does tree service software do?

It handles the admin side of a tree care business: estimates, job scheduling, crew dispatch, invoicing and customer communication, with tools for the office and the crews in the field.

Do I need software built for arborists?

Not always. Specialist tools speak the language of tree work, but general field service platforms can work well if you're happy to set them up for your jobs.

Can I quote from my phone on site?

It depends on the tool, so don't assume it. Ask each vendor to build a quote for one of your real jobs on their app during the demo.

Does software replace licences and permits?

No. Software helps you organise your records, but licence and permit requirements come from government agencies, so check those separately for where you work.
