How to Add Your Own Audio to an Instagram Reel

The short version: you can add your own audio to a Reel either by recording sound live as you film, uploading a separate audio file in the editing screen, or layering a voiceover over existing footage, and the setting that trips most people up is the one buried under "Advanced settings" that mutes original audio without telling you why. Original audio works best for voiceovers, tutorials and anything you want to repurpose later, but it will not get the same discovery boost that trending sounds get, and you need to accept that trade-off before you start.

Where to find the option

Instagram buries this more than it should. Open the Reels camera, and instead of tapping the big record button, look at the left-hand toolbar for an icon that looks like a musical note crossed out, or scroll the audio tray at the bottom. If you've already filmed your clip and you're in the editing screen, tap the audio icon at the top, then "Add yours" or "Record voiceover" depending on what you're after.

  • Filming fresh with your own sound: start recording as normal, speak or let ambient noise play, and don't add a separate music track unless you want it layered underneath.
  • Uploading a pre-made audio file: in the edit screen, tap the audio note icon, then "Upload audio," and pick the file from your camera roll. This works for voice memos, podcast clips, or a track you've recorded in GarageBand or Audacity.
  • Voiceover over existing footage: tap the microphone icon in editing, record while watching the clip play back, and adjust volume levels so your voice sits above (or under) any background sound.

A worked example

Say you run a small bakery account with 2,400 followers. You film a 22-second clip of icing a cake, no talking, just hands and piping bags. In the edit screen you tap the audio icon, choose "Record voiceover," play the clip back and narrate over it: "This is the buttercream trick that stopped my cakes cracking." You then drag the volume slider for the original clip audio down to around 20%, so the clatter of bowls doesn't drown your voice, and leave your voiceover track at 100%. Export, post, and the Reel keeps your actual voice rather than a trending song nobody associates with cake decorating. That's the version worth saving to a highlight or repurposing as a TikTok later, because it's yours.

The setting that quietly mutes everything

Here's the bit that annoys people: if you add text, stickers, or certain effects after recording your own audio, Instagram sometimes defaults to muting the original sound when you add a second audio layer on top, because it assumes you want the new track to replace it. Check the audio mixer (tap the audio icon again after editing) and make sure both tracks show a visible volume bar, not greyed out. If your voice disappears after you've added captions, this is almost always why.

The uncomfortable bit nobody tells you

Using your own audio instead of a trending sound will, on average, cost you reach. Instagram's recommendation system leans on sounds it already knows are circulating, and a Reel using original audio has to earn its distribution purely on watch time and shares, with none of the algorithmic nudge that comes from riding a trend. That's not a reason to avoid original audio, it's a reason to be honest about why you're using it. If the goal is reach, use trending audio and sync your point to the beat. If the goal is building a recognisable voice, authority, or content you can repurpose into podcasts or newsletters later, original audio wins every time. Most advice online pretends you can have both without compromise, and you can't, not consistently.

Mixing your voice with background music

If you want your voiceover plus a bed of music, record your voiceover first, then tap the audio icon again and add a track from Instagram's library or your own upload. Use the mixer to bring the music down to roughly 15 to 25%, enough to feel present without competing with speech. Export a test version and listen with headphones before publishing. I've seen too many Reels where the music sits at full volume and the voiceover becomes a mumble underneath a pop song.

Recording a clean voice track outside Instagram first

For anything longer than a quick caption, record your voiceover separately on your phone's voice memo app or a tool like Audacity, in a quiet room, then upload it as the audio file rather than recording live inside the Reels editor. This gives you the chance to redo a flubbed sentence without reshooting the whole clip, and you get a cleaner file you can also use elsewhere, which ties into turning a Reel into a reusable audio file for things like podcast clips or ad voiceovers.

What to do if you want to reuse someone else's structure but your own words

Sometimes you see a format you like, say a "three things I wish I knew" trend, and you want the pacing but not the sound. In that case, watch the original, note the timing of each beat (usually 3 to 5 seconds per point), then film your own version and record your own voiceover matching that rhythm. This is different from reusing the actual audio from another Reel, which is a separate feature entirely and uses Instagram's own audio attribution system.

Work with me

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

A quick checklist before you post

  • Audio mixer shows both tracks active if you've layered voice and music
  • Background noise reduced to under 25% if there's speech on top
  • Captions added as text so muted viewers still get the message (around 85% of Reels are watched with sound off at first)
  • File saved or exported separately if you want to reuse this voiceover elsewhere

If you're building a business account and audio strategy keeps eating your time, it might be worth getting outside eyes on your wider content and AI setup for small business rather than guessing feature by feature. Sometimes the fix isn't a better Reel, it's a better system behind it.

Frequently asked questions

Can I add my own music to an Instagram Reel instead of Instagram's library?

Yes, upload the audio file directly in the edit screen using "Upload audio," though if it's copyrighted commercial music Instagram may mute or flag it depending on licensing, so original recordings or royalty-free tracks are safer.

Why does my voiceover disappear after I add text or effects?

This usually happens because a second audio layer has muted the original track by default. Open the audio mixer after editing and check both tracks show visible volume bars rather than being greyed out.

Does using my own audio hurt reach on Instagram?

Often, yes, because Instagram's recommendation system favours sounds already trending, so original audio has to earn distribution through watch time and shares alone rather than algorithmic momentum.

Can I record a voiceover separately and upload it rather than recording live?

Yes, record on a voice memo app or something like Audacity in a quiet space, then upload the file in the Reels editor, which gives cleaner sound and the chance to redo mistakes without reshooting the video.
