How to Fix Instagram Notifications Not Working on Android

The short version: Instagram notifications stop working on Android because of one of three things: the app's own notification settings, your phone's battery optimisation rules, or a background data restriction. Work through them in that order, test after every single step, and you'll usually find the culprit inside ten minutes.

I run a business that lives inside Instagram DMs half the day, so when notifications go quiet I notice fast, and so does anyone who relies on the app to flag client messages, comments on a launch post, or follower activity. Android is worse for this than iPhone, mostly because every manufacturer (Samsung, Xiaomi, Huawei, Oppo) builds its own battery management layer on top of standard Android, and those layers love killing apps in the background to save power. Instagram is one of the main victims.

Start inside the Instagram app itself

Before you touch your phone settings, check Instagram's own notification controls. It sounds obvious, but I'd guess half the "broken notifications" reports are just a toggle someone switched off by accident months ago.

  • Open Instagram, go to your profile, tap the three lines, then Settings and privacy
  • Tap Notifications
  • Check that Pause All is switched off
  • Go through each category (Posts, Stories, Comments, Messages, Live Videos) and confirm they're set to "On" or "From everyone" rather than "Off"

If you've previously gone through the process of working out how to turn off Instagram notifications for a specific category, say during a busy launch week, it's worth checking you reversed all of it. And if you want the full build-from-scratch version of getting every toggle right, the guide to turning on Instagram notifications covers each setting in more depth than I'll go into here.

Check Android's own app notification permission

Android has a separate, system-level notification permission that sits outside Instagram's control. This is the step most people skip, and it's often the actual fix.

  • Go to Settings, then Apps, then Instagram
  • Tap Notifications
  • Make sure "Allow notifications" is switched on
  • Check each sub-category Android lists (on newer Android versions it splits things like "Direct messages" and "Suggestions" separately) and switch on anything that's off

On Android 13 and above, Google made this permission opt-in for every app, which means if you installed or reinstalled Instagram recently, you may have tapped "Don't allow" on the permission pop-up without really reading it. That one tap is enough to silence everything.

The uncomfortable bit: battery optimisation is doing this on purpose

Here's what most troubleshooting guides gloss over: your phone isn't malfunctioning when Instagram notifications stop coming through, it's working exactly as designed. Battery optimisation features exist specifically to stop apps running in the background, and Instagram running in the background is precisely what notifications need. You're not fighting a bug, you're fighting a feature, and that's why the fix has to be deliberate rather than a quick restart.

To fix it:

  • Go to Settings, then Apps, then Instagram, then Battery
  • Set it to "Unrestricted" or "Don't optimise" (wording varies by manufacturer)
  • On Samsung phones specifically, also go to Settings, Battery and device care, Background usage limits, and remove Instagram from both the "Sleeping apps" and "Deep sleeping apps" lists
  • On Xiaomi (MIUI), open Security, Battery, App battery saver, find Instagram and set it to "No restrictions"

Worked example: say you run a small online shop and use Instagram DMs for customer questions. You've got a Samsung Galaxy A54, and three days ago you noticed customers were messaging and you only saw it hours later. The app itself showed all notification settings switched on. The actual cause was Samsung's "Sleeping apps" list, which had auto-added Instagram after a week of you not opening it over a weekend. Removing it from that list and setting battery use to unrestricted fixed it immediately, no reinstall needed.

Check background data and Wi-Fi restrictions

Even with permissions and battery settings correct, Instagram still needs an active connection to receive push notifications when it's not open. Two settings commonly block this:

  • Settings, Apps, Instagram, Mobile data and Wi-Fi: make sure "Background data" is switched on
  • Settings, Apps, Instagram, Data Saver: make sure Instagram is allowed to use data while Data Saver mode is active, if you have that feature turned on

If you're on a work or school Wi-Fi network, some networks block the Google Firebase Cloud Messaging service that Instagram relies on for push alerts. If notifications only fail on one particular Wi-Fi network and work fine on mobile data, that network's firewall is almost certainly the cause, not your phone.

Update the app and check your login session

Instagram releases updates roughly every two to three weeks, and older versions sometimes lose their connection to the notification server after a backend change on Meta's side. Open the Google Play Store, search Instagram, and tap Update if it's available. If it's already up to date, try logging out and back in. This forces the app to re-register your device token with Instagram's push notification service, which fixes a surprising number of "nothing works and I can't find why" cases. If you use Instagram alongside Messenger and have run into sync issues before, it's the same underlying mechanism covered in the piece on how to log out of Messenger on Android and other devices, the login token is what tells the app where to deliver pushes.

Clear cache before you clear data

If updating and re-logging in hasn't worked, clear the app's cache rather than jumping straight to a full data wipe, which logs you out and resets saved preferences.

  1. Settings, Apps, Instagram, Storage
  2. Tap Clear Cache
  3. Reopen Instagram and test by having someone comment on one of your posts or send you a DM

Only use "Clear Data" as a last resort, since it removes saved login details, drafts and cached settings, essentially giving you a fresh install without the download.

Check if it's a muted account or chat

Sometimes it's not a system issue at all, it's that you've muted a specific person's posts, stories or messages, which is easy to forget months later. Go to their profile, tap the three dots, and check the mute settings for that individual account. This is also worth checking if only one contact's messages aren't coming through while everyone else's are fine, since that's a strong sign it's account-specific rather than phone-wide.

When none of this works

If you've gone through every setting and notifications are still patchy, the realistic options left are: uninstall and reinstall Instagram completely, check whether your phone manufacturer has a known bug for your specific model (search "[your phone model] notification delay" and you'll usually find a forum thread within the first page of results), or accept that some budget Android phones with aggressive battery chips (MediaTek-based devices are notorious for this) will always lag on background notifications regardless of settings. That's not a satisfying answer, but it's a true one, and no amount of toggling will out-engineer a chipset built to kill background apps.

If you're managing Instagram as part of a wider business setup and these small frictions keep costing you time or missed messages, it might be worth getting real help setting up your systems rather than patching things app by app.

Frequently asked questions

Why are my Instagram notifications not working on Android but fine on other apps?

This points to an Instagram-specific setting rather than a phone-wide problem, so check the in-app notification settings first, then Instagram's individual entry in Settings, Apps, Battery, since manufacturers often target specific apps for battery restrictions rather than applying rules globally.

Does restarting my phone fix Instagram notifications?

Sometimes, because a restart clears temporary background process issues, but it's a short-term fix rather than a real one; if notifications stop again within a day or two, go through the battery optimisation and background data settings instead.

Why do I only miss notifications when my phone has been idle for a while?

This is almost always battery optimisation putting Instagram into a sleep or deep sleep state after inactivity, which is common on Samsung, Xiaomi and Huawei phones specifically, and the fix is setting Instagram to unrestricted battery use rather than waiting for the phone to wake it up on its own.

Will reinstalling Instagram fix notification problems?

It can, because it forces a fresh registration with the push notification service and resets any corrupted settings, but try clearing the cache and checking battery and permission settings first since reinstalling logs you out and wipes local app data.
