How to Fix TikTok Shadowban Signs

The short version: TikTok rarely "shadowbans" anyone in the way people imagine, but your reach can tank because of community guideline strikes, spammy behaviour, or a device thats flagged. Fix it by auditing your last 20 posts, stripping out banned hashtags, taking a 48 hour break from aggressive engagement tactics, and rebuilding trust with the algorithm slowly rather than panic posting more content.

What a "shadowban" looks like

You post a video, it gets 40 views instead of your usual 2,000, and nobody outside your existing followers sees it. Your For You Page traffic drops to nearly zero. Your hashtag search doesn't surface your content even when you search it yourself in an incognito browser. That's the pattern people call a shadowban.

TikTok doesn't officially use the word. What's happening is usually one of three things: a guideline violation has throttled your distribution, your account has been flagged for spam-like behaviour, or you've tripped a filter meant to catch bots and engagement pods. None of these are permanent by design, but all three need you to change what you're doing, not just wait it out.

The signs that tell you something's wrong

  • Views drop by 80% or more across three or more consecutive posts with no change in content quality
  • Your videos stop appearing under hashtags you used to rank for
  • Followers tell you they're not seeing your posts in their feed
  • Your analytics show traffic almost entirely from "Followers" with For You Page at under 5%, when it used to be 60% or higher
  • Comments and likes come in far slower than normal, sometimes taking hours instead of minutes

One of these on its own could be a bad video. Three or more together, sustained over a week, is worth investigating.

A worked example

Say you run a small skincare brand account with 8,000 followers, posting five times a week, averaging 3,000 to 5,000 views per video. One Tuesday a video gets flagged and removed for "misleading content" because you used the word "cure" in a caption about blemishes. You appeal, it gets reinstated, but from that point your next six videos average under 200 views each.

That's not bad luck. That's TikTok's trust score system doing exactly what it's built to do: once a video trips a guideline flag, the account gets a temporary distribution penalty while the system reassesses whether you're a repeat risk. The fix isn't to post more and hope the algorithm forgets. It's to go back through your last 10 to 15 captions, remove any medical or exaggerated claims, delete or edit the offending video rather than leaving it in limbo, and post consistently normal, policy-safe content for seven to ten days before you expect recovery.

Step-by-step fix

  1. Audit your last 20 posts. Look for banned or restricted hashtags (anything medical, political, or adjacent to adult content gets throttled even when the video itself is tame), copyright music, and captions making claims you can't back up.
  2. Check your community guidelines status. Go to Settings and Privacy, then Account, then look for any notices about strikes or restricted features. One strike usually limits features like duets or lives for a set period; three strikes within 90 days typically triggers a ban.
  3. Stop using engagement pods or follow/unfollow tactics immediately. TikTok's spam detection flags accounts that get bursts of likes or comments from the same small cluster of accounts repeatedly. This is one of the fastest routes to reduced distribution and it's completely self-inflicted.
  4. Clear app cache and log out for 24 hours. This won't fix a guideline-based penalty but it does help if the issue is device or app-level flagging from excessive automation or a cloned app.
  5. Post normally for 7 to 10 days. No hashtag spam, no five posts a day trying to force recovery, no buying followers. One good video a day, clean captions, native TikTok sounds where possible.
  6. Use the in-app feedback form if a video was wrongly removed. It's slow, often two to five days for a response, but it's the only official channel and it does work often enough to be worth the five minutes it takes.

The uncomfortable bit nobody wants to say

Most "shadowban fix" threads tell you it's all algorithm mystery and bad luck. It isn't. In the vast majority of cases I come across when people ask me to look at a dropping TikTok account, the drop traces back to something the account owner did: reposting someone else's video with a new caption slapped on, using a growth service that auto-follows hundreds of accounts a day, or posting the same video to three accounts from the same phone. TikTok's systems are built specifically to catch exactly that behaviour, and they're good at it. If your views crashed right after you tried a shortcut, the shortcut is almost certainly why.

That's not a popular thing to hear when you want a quick fix, but it's the difference between recovering and spending three weeks blaming an algorithm that's working as intended.

What recovery timelines look like

A spam flag from aggressive follow/unfollow behaviour usually clears within 48 to 72 hours of you stopping the behaviour. A single removed video with a content strike tends to affect distribution for roughly one to two weeks. Repeated violations within a 90 day window can suppress an account for a month or longer, and in the worst cases TikTok will quietly cap your reach long term rather than reversing it, which is why prevention matters more than any fix.

If you're building a presence across platforms rather than just TikTok, it's worth reading up on the wider picture too. There's a detailed TikTok help guide covering views, pay, freezing fixes and followers that's useful if you're troubleshooting more than one issue at once. The same discipline around avoiding shortcuts applies if you're trying to grow Instagram followers safely rather than through bought engagement, and it's worth knowing roughly how many Twitter accounts are bots before you assume engagement services on any platform are harmless.

Prevention, because this is the bit people skip

  • Never buy followers or likes, on TikTok or anywhere else. Platforms cross-reference suspicious follower spikes against engagement rate and it's one of the easiest patterns to detect.
  • Keep captions free of absolute health, financial or legal claims. Words like "cure", "guaranteed income" or "legal advice" get flagged by automated filters regardless of context.
  • Don't post the same video across five accounts from one device. TikTok links accounts by device ID and IP, and duplicate content from linked accounts gets suppressed across the board.
  • Space out follows. More than 30 to 40 new follows in a short window from a single account reads as bot-like behaviour.
  • If you're running TikTok Shop or linking out, check your Instagram help resources too since cross-platform link patterns get scrutinised when they look automated.

If your reach has been flat for over a month despite following all of this and you run a business account where TikTok is a meaningful revenue channel, it might be worth getting a second pair of eyes on your whole setup rather than guessing. An AI consultant for small business can help you work out whether the problem is the platform, the content, or the strategy behind it.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if I'm shadowbanned on TikTok?

Search your own hashtags in an incognito browser or logged-out app session. If your recent videos don't appear even though they used to, combined with a sudden drop in For You Page traffic in your analytics, that's a strong sign your distribution has been throttled.

How long does a TikTok shadowban last?

Spam-related throttling from aggressive engagement behaviour often clears within 48 to 72 hours of stopping that behaviour. A content guideline strike typically affects reach for one to two weeks, while repeated violations within 90 days can suppress an account for a month or more.

Can I fix a TikTok shadowban without deleting my account?

Yes, and deleting your account rarely helps anyway since your device and linked details stay flagged. Audit recent posts for guideline issues, stop any automation or follow/unfollow tactics, and post normally for a week to ten days to rebuild trust.

Does using TikTok growth services cause shadowbans?

Often, yes. Services that auto-follow, auto-like or buy engagement are one of the most common causes of sudden reach drops, because TikTok's spam detection is specifically built to catch that exact pattern of behaviour.
