Can i hide my followers on X? The Straight Answer for X in 2026

No. On X (formerly Twitter), you cannot hide your followers list or who you follow from other people if your account is public. You can only restrict this by setting your account to private, which limits your posts and lists to approved followers only. There is no setting to selectively hide follower counts or names.

Can you hide followers on X?

I get asked this a lot, so let me be direct. No, you cannot hide your followers list on X (formerly Twitter) while keeping your account public. The followers and following tabs are visible to anyone who visits your profile, and there is no privacy toggle that hides just that section.

This has been the case for years and nothing in X's current settings changes it. If someone tells you there is a hidden setting for this, they are wrong.

What X lets you control

X gives you two real options when it comes to privacy around your account activity. The first is making your whole account private. The second is blocking or muting individual accounts. Neither of these hides your follower list selectively.

There is no middle ground where you keep a public profile but hide who follows you. It is all or nothing.

How a private account changes things

Switching to a private account restricts your posts, follower list, and following list to people you have approved. Anyone else sees a locked profile with a request to follow button.

This is the closest thing to hiding your followers. But it comes with a trade off. Your posts will not show up in public search, and people cannot retweet or quote your content unless they already follow you. For anyone using X to build an audience or promote a business, this usually defeats the point.

How to make your account private

If you still want to go this route, here is how to do it.

  1. Open X and go to your profile icon
  2. Tap Settings and privacy
  3. Select Privacy and safety
  4. Choose Audience and tagging
  5. Turn on Protect your posts

Once this is switched on, your follower and following lists are only visible to approved followers. New follow requests will need your manual approval.

What about hiding who you follow, not your followers?

Some people specifically want to hide who they follow rather than who follows them. X does not separate these two. The privacy setting covers both lists together. You cannot hide one and show the other.

If you follow someone and do not want that public, the only way is the full private account route, or unfollowing them.

Can you hide your follower count instead?

This is a different question I hear often. People sometimes want to keep their profile public but just hide the number of followers they have, perhaps because the number feels too low or too high for their goals.

X does not offer this either. The follower count sits on your public profile by default and there is no setting to remove or mask it while keeping the account open. If the number bothers you, the only real options are growing it, making the account private, or accepting it as it is.

Why people want to hide followers on X

I see a few common reasons. Some people are worried about competitors seeing who they are connected to. Others do not want followers to see a long list of accounts they follow, in case it looks odd or unprofessional. A few just want more control over their data generally.

These are fair concerns, but X's current structure does not give you a way to address them without going private. Knowing this upfront saves you time searching for a setting that does not exist.

What I would do instead

If privacy matters more to you than public reach, go private and accept the trade offs. If you need your account to stay public for business, networking, or visibility, then the follower list being visible is part of the deal.

There is no clever workaround, no third party tool sanctioned by X, and no partial setting that splits the difference. Be clear with yourself about which matters more, visibility or privacy, and set your account accordingly.

Frequently asked questions

Can I hide just my followers list but keep my account public on X?

No. X does not offer a setting that hides only your followers while keeping everything else public. The only way to restrict your follower list is to make your entire account private.

Does making my account private hide my follower count too?

Making your account private hides your follower and following lists from anyone who is not an approved follower. It does not remove the follower count from your public profile header.

Is there a paid feature on X to hide followers?

No. There is no paid tier or subscription feature that lets you selectively hide your followers while keeping your account public. The private account setting is the only built in option.

Will a private account hurt my reach on X?

Yes, it can. Private accounts cannot be found through public search, and only approved followers can see, retweet, or quote your posts, which limits growth and visibility.
