ChatGPT works in Apple CarPlay as a voice-first app on supported iPhones running iOS 26.4 or later, on all ChatGPT plans. Connect your iPhone, select ChatGPT, then New voice chat, and start talking once the screen says Listening.
OpenAI says ChatGPT in CarPlay is available globally on every ChatGPT plan, Free included. It's designed to be voice-first: you can start a new conversation, or carry on with a recent chat or a project, from your car screen. Some features aren't available in the car, and OpenAI is clear about which ones.
What you need before you set off
| What you need | What to check |
|---|---|
| A supported iPhone | It's running iOS 26.4 or later |
| The ChatGPT app | You're on the latest version |
| A car with Apple CarPlay | CarPlay already works with your phone |
| A ChatGPT account | Any plan works, Free included |
| Voice settings, if you want them | Start automatically in CarPlay is switched on, if you'd like it to open in voice mode |
All of this is a job for the driveway, not the road. More on that below.
Start a voice chat
The steps from OpenAI's help page, as of Nov 2026:
- Connect your iPhone to your car to start CarPlay.
- In CarPlay, select ChatGPT.
- Select New voice chat.
- Wait for the connection, and for the text to change from Connecting to Listening.
- Speak your prompt to begin.
Step four is the one people rush. OpenAI's steps have you wait for Listening before you speak, so give it a moment rather than talking over Connecting.
Talk inside a project
If you keep ChatGPT projects for different parts of your business, you can start a voice chat inside one, so the new chat lands in that project rather than as a loose chat in your history:
- In CarPlay, select ChatGPT.
- Select the Projects tab.
- Select the project you want the new chat to sit in.
- Select New voice chat.
This is the most useful part for a business owner. Say you've got a project for a client or a launch. You can talk through ideas on the way to a meeting, and the conversation stays with that work. If you haven't set projects up yet, my guide to ChatGPT projects shows how they work.
Pick up a chat where you left off
- In CarPlay, select ChatGPT.
- Select a pinned or recent chat you want to continue.
- Speak your prompt to carry on.
If there's one chat you'll want on the road, pin it in the app before you leave, so it's easy to find on the car screen without scrolling.
Open straight into voice mode
By default, ChatGPT in CarPlay opens to the Chats screen. You can skip that and go straight into voice:
- Connect your iPhone to your car to start CarPlay.
- In CarPlay, select ChatGPT.
- On your iPhone, open the ChatGPT app and go to Settings.
- Under Voice, turn on Start automatically in CarPlay.
- The next time you open ChatGPT in CarPlay, it opens in voice mode.
One more behaviour that surprises people: CarPlay reopens the last app you used when your phone reconnects. If that was ChatGPT, it may open by itself when you get back in the car. That's CarPlay, not ChatGPT.
What it won't do in the car
OpenAI says ChatGPT in CarPlay supports voice conversations much like the iPhone app, with two limits:
- It can't access maps, vehicle information or your live location.
- It can't control your car or affect other apps, such as Maps, Mail or Slack.
So it won't navigate for you, read your messages or tell you how much fuel you've got. It's a conversation, nothing more.
A few other points from OpenAI's pages are worth knowing before a long drive. During a voice conversation you can ask ChatGPT to search the web, but those searches count towards your plan's usage limits, and restaurant reservation search isn't available in voice. On the Free tier, voice has its own usage limit, separate from everyday text chat, and ChatGPT tells you when you reach it. For more on how voice works in general, see my page on ChatGPT voice mode.
And if it sounds poor, it may be the car. OpenAI says audio depends on your car's microphones, speakers and echo cancellation. If it's unreliable, it suggests trying a different car, if you have one, to see whether the problem is car-specific.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
Stay safe
OpenAI's own safety advice is short: only use your phone when it's allowed by law and conditions permit safe use; set the app up before driving; rely on hands-free, voice-first features whenever possible; and avoid interacting with your device while the vehicle is moving.
I'd take that literally. Do the settings, pin your chats and pick your project while you're parked. Once you're moving, it's voice or nothing.
What's it good for on a drive?
For a business owner, I'd use it for the kind of thinking you'd normally do out loud with a colleague. Running through what you want to say in a pitch before you walk in. Talking through a problem with a supplier and the options you've got. Getting the first rough structure of a newsletter or a proposal out of your head and into a project chat, so it's waiting for you at your desk.
What I wouldn't use it for is anything you'd need to read, check or look at. It can't show you a document while you drive, and you shouldn't be looking anyway.
What I'd do
I'd set it up in the driveway first: update the app, switch on Start automatically in CarPlay, and pin the one or two chats I'd want on the road. Then I'd use it for thinking out loud on a journey, inside the right project.
And I'd skip anything that needs me to look at a screen or a file. Save those for when you've parked.
