Best Self-Cleaning Litter Boxes (2026): 9 Automatic Boxes

The best self-cleaning litter box depends on what you want done with the waste. Some boxes sift it out and hold it for you to empty, some scoop it and flush it away through a water line, and some clean after each visit while logging your cat's weight and litter use. Choose the job first, then the box.

Shop for a self-cleaning litter box and every page makes the same promise: less scooping. What sits behind that promise varies a lot, from a box that sifts waste into a drawer, to one that's plumbed into a water line, to one that keeps a record of each visit.

This list covers nine makers, using only what each one's own site says, read on 2 Nov 2026 (as of Nov 2026). It's alphabetical and in no particular order. There's nothing here about odor, noise or reviews: it's about what each box does with the waste and what else its maker sells beside it.

Nine automatic litter box makers

CatGenie

Best for: Flushing waste away instead of bagging it: the Whoosh and A.I. models both scoop and flush all waste, and connect to a cold water line.

CATLINK

Best for: Choosing from a wide Scooper range, from the Open-X and SE models to a camera litter box in its health monitoring collection.

Litter-Robot

Best for: Homes with more than one cat: its page says every model supports multi-cat households and automatically sifts out waste, with a companion Whisker app.

Neakasa

Best for: Picking between the M1, M1 Lite and M9 litter boxes from a maker that also sells pet grooming kits and a smart wet food feeder.

PAWBBY

Best for: Keeping an eye on a cat's habits: the box cleans automatically after each use and tracks weight, litter use and frequency.

PETKIT

Best for: Building a matching set: Purobot litter boxes, some with a camera, sold beside smart feeders and smart water fountains as one smart home.

PETLIBRO

Best for: Owners of its feeders or fountains who want the Luma litter box, which its menu lists with Video Cloud AI.

PetSafe

Best for: One-brand shopping: self-cleaning litter boxes and ScoopFree litter trays from a pet brand that also sells dog fences and GPS trackers.

PurrSong

Best for: Pairing a litter box with a tracker: its range is the LavvieBox, the LavvieBot S litter box and the LavvieTAG.

Collected, flushed or measured: three kinds of box

Here's the split a searcher wouldn't guess. 'Self-cleaning litter box' covers three different machines, and the right one depends on whether you want waste collected, flushed or measured. Litter-Robot says its box 'automatically sifts out waste'. CatGenie's Whoosh 'scoops and flushes all waste'. And PAWBBY lists pet monitoring that tracks a cat's 'weight, litter use, and frequency'.

  • Collected: a box that sifts waste out of the clean litter and holds it for you to empty.
  • Flushed: a box connected to a water line that scoops waste and sends it down a drain.
  • Measured: a scoop-free box that also logs each visit, so you can follow your cat's weight and litter use.

Boxes that collect waste for you to empty

Several makers' shop pages point to the first kind. One maker with a long Scooper range sells waste bags for its boxes as an accessory, alongside ramps. One pet brand sells ScoopFree litter trays with cleanup bags included. And another maker is taking orders for a cat litter disposal system to go with its litter boxes.

So before you choose, look at what the box needs from you between cleans: bags, liners, trays or a particular litter. That's the part of owning one you'll do every week, and it's listed on the makers' own accessory pages.

Plumbed in: the self-flushing option

The flushing kind works differently. One maker sells two models, Whoosh and A.I., with no drawer at all: its page says both scoop and flush all waste. The Whoosh uses a litter that dissolves in water, while the A.I. uses reusable washable granules that are cleaned and warm-air dried.

Setup is the part to plan for. The same page says you connect the box to a cold water supply line with the supplied T-adapter, and it drains into a toilet or a washer's waste pipe. So the box needs to sit near plumbing, and that decides which rooms it can go in before you've compared anything else.

Cameras, weight tracking and visit logs

The third kind adds data. One box on this list cleans automatically after each use and tracks a cat's weight, litter use and frequency. Another maker files its camera litter box under a Health Monitoring & Camera collection, and PETLIBRO lists its Luma box with Video Cloud AI and the line 'Data without the digging'.

If you've got more than one cat, check whether the box is described for multi-cat homes. Three makers here mention it: one says every model in its line supports households with multiple cats, one calls its box multi-cat friendly, and one sells models labelled for multi-cat families.

What else these makers sell beside the box

This is where the makers differ most. PETKIT sells its litter box with a smart feeder and a smart water fountain as one smart home, and its menu adds carriers and dryer boxes. Neakasa also sells pet grooming kits and a smart wet food feeder, and the maker of the Luma box sells feeders and fountains too.

One pet brand here goes wider still, with dog fences and GPS tracking beside its litter boxes, and another pairs its litter boxes with a pet tracker. If you already own a smart feeder or fountain from one of these makers, it's worth starting with the maker you've got.

Questions to settle before choosing a box

  • Do I want waste collected in a drawer or bag, or flushed away?
  • Is there a cold water line and a drain near where the box will go?
  • How many cats will use it?
  • Do I want the box to log my cat's weight and visits?
  • Would a camera on the box be useful to me?
  • Do I already own a feeder or fountain from one of these makers?
  • Which bags, liners, trays or litter will the box need?

My advice on choosing a self-cleaning box

Decide what you want done with the waste before you compare models. If you're happy to empty a bag now and then, a sifting box is the simplest place to start. If you never want to handle waste, look at the self-flushing models, but check your plumbing first. And if you'd like to keep an eye on your cat's weight and habits, pick a box that logs each visit.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between a self-cleaning and a self-flushing litter box?

A self-cleaning box sifts or scoops waste out of the clean litter and holds it for you to empty. A self-flushing box goes a step further: one maker here says its two models scoop and flush all waste, through a box connected to a cold water line that drains into a toilet or a washer's waste pipe.

Which of these litter boxes track a cat's weight?

One box on this list says it tracks a cat's weight, litter use and frequency, and cleans automatically after each use. CATLINK files a camera litter box under a health monitoring and camera collection, and another maker lists Video Cloud AI with its Luma box.

Do any of these litter boxes have a camera?

Yes. One maker lists a camera litter box in its health monitoring collection, and another sells several of its Purobot boxes in versions with a camera. Check each model's own page, as not every box in a range has one.

Are any of these made for homes with more than one cat?

Three makers mention it. One says every model in its line supports households with multiple cats, one lists its box as multi-cat friendly, and one sells Open-X models labelled for multi-cat homes.

Which makers also sell feeders and fountains?

Several do. One maker sells its litter boxes beside a smart feeder and smart water fountain, another sells the Luma box beside feeders and fountains, and another sells a smart wet food feeder and pet grooming kits. PetSafe sells fountains and feeders beside dog fences and GPS trackers.

What is the LavvieBot S?

It's the automatic litter box from PurrSong, whose range also includes the LavvieBox and the LavvieTAG tracker. Its product menu lists all three, plus accessories.
