Best Family Law Software (2026): 9 Tools for Family Law Firms

Family law software comes in two kinds: tools built around divorce, custody and support work, and general legal practice platforms that list family law among their practice areas. Decide how much of your practice is family law, then compare intake, forms, billing and the financial side of a divorce matter.

If you run a family law practice, the software question isn't just which platform is popular. It's whether a vendor builds for divorce, custody and support matters at all, or simply lists family law next to a dozen other practice areas.

The nine tools below are listed alphabetically and in no particular order, and every line comes from each vendor's own website, read on 2 Nov 2026 (as of Nov 2026). There's no legal advice here, just what each vendor says its software does.

Nine options for family law firms

Actionstep

CARET Legal

Best for: Cloud case management, workflows, billing and payments, with family law on its practice-area list and separate tracks for firms of 1-30 and 30+ employees.

Family Law Software

Best for: Divorce professionals calculating support and building financial analyses, with a child support calculator, a divorce financial planner and state-specific pages from California to Pennsylvania.

Gavel

Best for: Turning client intake data into finished legal documents, from a document automation vendor that lists family law among its practice areas and is now part of Relativity.

Lawcus

Lawmatics

Best for: Intake and CRM for firms chasing new clients, with a Merlin Qualify tool its page says will instantly score leads and sign the right clients faster.

LEAP

MyCase

Best for: Handling family law work with the features its page lists for that practice: time-tracking and invoicing, online payment, trust accounting and document management.

Smokeball

Best for: Family lawyers wanting pre-built workflows for divorce, custody and support cases, jurisdiction-specific forms that auto-populate and a FamilyPro feature on its menu.

Built for divorce work, or family law on a longer list?

Here's the split you won't see from a row of logos: only three of these nine are built around divorce work. Smokeball has a whole page titled family law software for legal practices, LEAP gives family law its own entry with automated forms and split billing, and Family Law Software describes itself as software for divorce professionals. The other six are general legal platforms that list family law among their practice areas.

That isn't a knock on the other six. A general platform can suit a mixed practice that also handles estate planning or personal injury. It just means you'll want to ask in the demo what's there for family matters specifically.

Finances, intake and paperwork in a divorce matter

Look past the practice-area label to the job you need done. The divorce-only tool on this list says its mission is to equip legal and financial advisors to help family law clients resolve financial matters fairly and efficiently, and it lists state financial forms it fills in from data you or the client enter.

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

Intake is a separate purchase for some firms. Lawmatics is built around lead and client intake, CRM and marketing automation, and Gavel turns intake data into finished documents. If your bottleneck is new enquiries rather than running matters, start there.

For day-to-day matters, the general platforms cover billing, trust accounting and documents. MyCase lists time-tracking and invoicing, online payment, trust accounting and document management for family law, and Lawcus lists trust accounting, a client portal and document automation on its menu.

Five questions to ask in a family law software demo

  1. Is family law a page of its own on the vendor's site, or one name in a practice-area list?
  2. Which state forms does it fill in for you, and is your state covered?
  3. Can it handle split billing between parties?
  4. How does intake work, and does it connect to the system you run matters in?
  5. Can clients message you through a secure, encrypted portal?

My plain advice for family law firms

If divorce, custody and support work is most of what you do, start with the three tools built around it, because their pages describe family-specific workflows, forms and calculators. If family law is one practice area among several, a general platform that lists it makes the simpler choice, and you can add an intake tool or a support calculator on top. Either way, ask each vendor to demo a real family matter from intake to final invoice.

Frequently asked questions

What is family law software?

It's software for law firms that handle divorce, custody and support matters. On this list, three tools are built around that work, and six are general legal platforms that list family law among their practice areas.

Which of these are built specifically for divorce work?

Three. One has a full page of family law features, including pre-built workflows for divorce, custody and support cases; one lists automated forms and split billing for family law matters; and one is software for divorce professionals, with a child support calculator and a divorce financial planner.

Is there family law software for a midsize firm?

Yes. Actionstep says its platform helps midsize law firms, and CARET Legal has separate tracks for smaller firms of 1-30 employees and larger firms of 30+.

Can family law software calculate child support?

One tool on this list includes a child support calculator and a divorce financial planner, and lists state financial forms it completes from data you or your client enter. Check your state is covered before you sign up.

What's the difference between a legal CRM and practice management software?

On this list, the CRM tool is built around lead and client intake, marketing automation and signing new clients, while practice management covers matters, billing, trust accounting and documents once someone's a client.

Does family law software handle trust accounting?

Several platforms here list it. One lists trust accounting among its family law features, others put it in their main menu, and the divorce-focused page with pre-built workflows lists trust accounting next to invoicing and payments.
