A Discord server can join Server Discovery once it's a Community server with at least 1,000 members, is at least 8 weeks old, meets Discord's activity and safety requirements, follows the Discovery Guidelines and has the 2FA requirement for moderation switched on. Being Discoverable also gives the server a public web page people can find through web search, and as of Nov 2026 Discord says that page will start showing AI-generated summaries of your public channels by default.
Discord describes Server Discovery as the way a Community server becomes a Discoverable server that anyone can find and join without an invite. That's the part everyone knows. The part most server owners haven't clocked yet is what happens on the open web, which changes this month.
The six boxes Discord wants ticked
| Requirement | What Discord says | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Safety | Safety requirements must be enabled | Discord Help, Enabling Server Discovery |
| Size | At least 1,000 members | Discord Help, Enabling Server Discovery |
| Age | At least 8 weeks old | Discord Help, Enabling Server Discovery |
| Activity | Meets Discord's activity requirements | Discord Help, Enabling Server Discovery |
| Naming | Server name, description and channel names follow the Discovery Guidelines | Discord Help, Enabling Server Discovery |
| Moderation | The 2FA Requirement for Moderation setting is on | Discord Help, Enabling Server Discovery |
Discord adds that the criteria can change and servers have to keep meeting them. Only members with the Manage Server or Administrator permission can switch Discovery on.
The Discovery Guidelines themselves come in six parts: follow the Community Guidelines and Terms of Service and have your moderators deal with reports; keep the space healthy, with no bullying, harassment or discussion of controlled substances; no graphic or sexual content, and anything publicly viewable must suit audiences aged 13 and over; an accurate name and description free of profanity; respect for intellectual property; and a moderator team.
Read the second point twice if you're a drinks brand. Discord's guidelines say no servers dedicated to regulated goods such as alcohol. Discord also says it may remove a server or account from discovery after a recent Community Guidelines violation and enforcement action, and it may consider behaviour off the platform. If you've had a strike, Discord's warning system explains how that's recorded.
Switching Discoverable on
As of Nov 2026, the steps from Discord's help centre are:
- Check you have the Manage Server or Administrator permission.
- Open Server Settings by selecting the server name in the upper left.
- If the server isn't a Community server yet, choose Enable Community, then Get Started, and follow the prompts. What that switch adds is in my guide to Discord Community servers.
- Go to Access, then the Discoverable tab, to see whether you meet each requirement.
- If you do, select Save.
- Open Server Settings, Community, Web Presence and decide what you want public before 16 November 2026.
One thing to know before you experiment: Discord says turning off Community also turns off Discoverability automatically. And two shortcuts people ask about don't help most businesses. Verified servers qualify as Discoverable automatically, but the Verified Server Program is open for eligible games. The Discord Partner Program is closed to new applications. I wouldn't plan around either.
Where people find a Discoverable server
Discord says Discoverable servers can be found without an invite through Server Discovery, through Discord's own servers directory on the web, and through web search. Inside the app, Server Discovery is the Compass icon at the bottom of the server list. People browse categories such as Gaming, Music, Education, Science and Tech, Entertainment and Student Hubs, or search by keyword, and Discord says the results aren't personalised.
Lurker Mode lets people look around a server's public channels before joining, which is why your channel names and pinned posts matter. Discord is also testing a Discover tab with a share of users that shows servers and Quests, and it says a server removed from Discover may have broken the Discovery Guidelines. For the member's side of all this, see how people find Discord servers.
Your public web page, and what lands on it from 16 November
Every Discoverable server has a Server Web Page anyone can find through web search. Discord calls the controls for it Web Presence: Server Settings, then Community, then Web Presence. As of Nov 2026, Discord says those settings are desktop and browser only, only the owner or an Administrator can change them, and bots can't. The controls roll out gradually from 27 October 2026.
| Web Presence control | Default | When, as Discord says |
|---|---|---|
| Channel Summaries on the web | On | AI-generated summaries of active public-channel conversations from 16 November 2026 |
| Channel Messages on the web | On for the server; members choose for their own messages | Answers posted in public channels findable in web search from mid-December 2026 |
| Default Server Web Page | Goes live for you if you haven't published your own | 16 November 2026 |
| Private channels, such as role-restricted ones | Never included | Always |
Discord is plain about the summaries: they're automated, AI-generated, and may not always be accurate. Usernames and avatars aren't shown in summaries or alongside messages. Admins can change which channels feed them, curate what's shown or switch them off, and in some regions members' Channel Messages setting is off by default. When you create a new public channel in a Discoverable server, the creation window lets you pick All Content, Summaries Only, Messages Only or Off for that channel.
Discord also says it isn't selling user messages to AI companies; it's making content easier to find where admins and users choose. You don't have to take that on trust, though, because every toggle is yours to set.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
Pulling content back off the web
Discord gives three ways to remove something: delete the message, turn the feature off, or deselect the channel. Turning a feature off stops new content, but what's already published may stay until it's removed one item at a time, and search engines keep their own copies, so it can take a while to disappear from results.
To remove the Server Web Page entirely, turn off Discoverability under Server Settings, Access. Discord says the server goes back to being a Community server, it's no longer found through Discovery, its web pages come down, and new members need an invite link again.
Is Discovery worth chasing for a brand server?
I'd go for Discovery once you're past 1,000 members and your moderators are in place, because it's the only route Discord gives for strangers to join without an invite. I'd start by opening Web Presence before 16 November and choosing channel by channel what goes on the web. Skip it, or switch summaries off, if your server runs on customer conversations you'd rather not see paraphrased by AI on a public page. Discovery won't promise you members, and it doesn't come with a ranking; it opens the door and makes you responsible for what's visible through it.
If you're growing a Discord community around your brand, getting found and choosing what shows up in search are part of the community planning I help with. I run AI training and workshops for teams, and help businesses with AI enablement and workflow automation, so the busywork runs itself and people get time back. Most of that work is with SaaS marketing teams and small businesses. Here's how we can work together.
Frequently asked questions
How many members do you need for Discord Server Discovery?
Discord says at least 1,000, and the server must also be at least 8 weeks old and a Community server.
Will my Discord server's chats show up on Google?
As of Nov 2026, Discord says summaries of public channels may appear on your Server Web Page from 16 November 2026, and members' answers in public channels can be found in web search from mid-December 2026. Private channels are never included.
Can I stay Discoverable but switch off the AI summaries?
Yes. Discord says Channel Summaries and Channel Messages are separate toggles under Server Settings, Community, Web Presence, and you can turn either off or pick channels.
What happens if I turn off Discoverable?
Discord says the server goes back to being a Community server, its web pages come down and new members need an invite link again. Search engines may take time to drop it.
Can I apply to the Discord Partner Program instead?
No. Discord says the Partner Program is closed to new applications. The Verified Server Program is open for eligible games, and Verified servers qualify as Discoverable automatically.
