T-Shirt Mockup Generators (2026): 10 Tools Compared

A T-shirt mockup generator places your finished design onto a photo or render of a shirt, so you can show it in a listing or a pitch before anything's printed. There are three starting points: dedicated mockup generators, design suites with a mockup tool inside, and print-on-demand firms' own generators. Ten follow, in no particular order.

A flat design file doesn't sell a T-shirt. A photo of someone wearing it does, and a good mockup gets you that photo without a single print run or photoshoot.

The ten tools below are listed alphabetically and in no particular order. Each description comes from the vendor's own website, read on 1 Nov 2026. This page is about the mockup step, showing a finished design on a shirt, rather than creating the artwork itself. If you only want a handful of free templates, my guide on where to get free mockups is a quicker read.

Mockup generator, design suite or print firm?

Here's how the vendors describe themselves. Dynamic Mockups says it turns designs into 'photorealistic mockups, listings, lookbooks and embroidery files', and the titles of Mockey and Mockuuups both read 'Free Mockup Generator'. Artboard Studio is an 'Online Mockup Generator & Editor for Designers', and Mediamodifier is an 'Online Mockup Generator'.

Others come at it from design. Smartmockups now sits on Canva's site under the Canva Mockups name, with the line 'Create stunning product mockups'. Pixelied is a 'Free Online Graphic Design Suite' and Kittl is 'The AI-First Design Platform for Creators'. Printful's page is a 'Free mockup generator' from a print-on-demand firm, for the products it prints itself.

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

So the split a merch seller wouldn't guess is this: a mockup generator, a design suite with a mockup tool inside and a print-on-demand firm's own generator are three different starting points. The right one depends on where your design is made and where the shirt will be printed.

What makes a T-shirt mockup look real

  • Fabric that bends the design. A good template warps your artwork to follow folds and creases, so it looks printed rather than pasted on.
  • Colour variants. Switching the shirt colour in one go saves building a separate mockup for every colourway.
  • Flat and lifestyle shots. Flat-lay and ghost-mannequin shots show the print clearly, while lifestyle photos with a model sell the feel. Most stores use both.
  • Resolution and file type. Export at a size your store accepts, and make sure the design you upload has a transparent background, usually a PNG.
  • Licence terms. Check each mockup template is licensed for commercial use in product listings and ads.

Matching the mockup to where you sell

If you sell through a print-on-demand firm, its own generator shows the exact blanks it prints on, which keeps the listing honest about the product. If you sell across several stores or need hundreds of designs on many shirts, a dedicated generator with bulk tools or an API saves hours. If you already design in a browser suite, using its mockup section keeps everything in one place.

Mockup mistakes to avoid on a merch listing

  • Showing a colour you can't print. Only mock up the shirt colours your printer offers.
  • Using one mockup for every design. Shoppers scroll past listings that all look the same, so vary the angles and settings.
  • Stretching a low-resolution file. Upload your design at full size, or the mockup will look soft when someone zooms in.
  • Ignoring the print area. Keep the design inside the area your printer can print, so the mockup matches the shirt that arrives.

My plain advice on choosing a mockup generator

Start from where the shirt is printed. If a print-on-demand firm makes it, try its own generator first, because it already knows the blanks. If you need volume, with many designs on many products, a dedicated generator built for bulk work is worth the switch. If you're a designer pitching to clients, an editor made for presentations will show the work at its best. Whichever you try, run one design through it from upload to finished listing photo before you commit.

Frequently asked questions

What is a T-shirt mockup generator?

It's a tool that places your design onto a realistic image of a T-shirt, so you can show the finished product before anything's printed.

Are T-shirt mockups free?

Some generators and print-on-demand firms offer free mockups, while others keep certain templates or watermark-free downloads for a plan. Check each vendor's own site.

Can I use mockups in my store listings?

Usually, yes, but check the licence on each template, especially for ads, and make sure the mockup matches the product you'll send.

What file should I upload for a mockup?

A high-resolution PNG with a transparent background works for most generators, so the shirt colour shows through around your design.

Do I need Photoshop to make a mockup?

No. Browser-based generators place the design for you, though some tools also let you add your own Photoshop mockup templates.

What's the difference between a mockup tool and a design tool?

A design tool is where you create the artwork, and a mockup generator shows that finished artwork on a product. Some design suites include both.
