Instagram has three separate disappearing features: disappearing messages that vanish after a timer you choose, vanish mode where content goes when someone leaves the chat, and disappearing photos and videos you send as view once, view twice or unlimited views. The timer and vanish mode only work in chats with another Instagram account, and as of Nov 2026 both are limited by location.
People use the three names as if they're one feature. They aren't, and the rules differ in ways that matter if you run a business account. None of them works on a computer either: Instagram's Help pages say they're phone app features only.
Timer, vanish mode and view once, side by side
| Feature | How you start it | What disappears, and when | Who can use it | The catch |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Disappearing messages (timer) | Swipe up in a chat | Messages you send after turning it on, once the default time has passed | Chats with another Instagram account, in certain locations | Some message types aren't supported and stay in the chat |
| Vanish mode | Swipe up in a chat | Messages, photos, videos and other content, when someone leaves the chat or turns vanish mode off | Chats with another Instagram account; may be unavailable in Europe | Nobody can copy, save or forward the messages |
| Disappearing photo or video | Choose View once, View twice or Unlimited views before sending | The photo or video once it's been viewed, unless you allowed a replay | People who follow you or have already approved messages from you | You can't view it yourself after sending |
Notice that Instagram's Help pages describe the same swipe up for the timer and for vanish mode. Which one you're in shows in the notification that appears in the conversation, so read it before you start typing anything you'd rather not keep.
How the timer version works
- Tap Messages at the bottom of the app.
- Open a chat.
- Swipe up. A notification appears in the conversation, and messages you send from then on disappear after the default time.
- To change how long messages last, tap Change timer below a message.
- Swipe up again to turn it off.
Tap and hold any message to see how much longer it'll stay. Some message types aren't supported and won't disappear, even with the feature on. They show an information icon, and you have to delete them by hand: tap and hold, then Delete.
One detail most people wouldn't guess: reactions change the clock. If someone reacts to a disappearing message, it disappears once everyone has seen both the message and the reaction, as long as that's still inside the maximum time before it was due to expire. You can only forward or save disappearing messages that you sent yourself.
Vanish mode: gone when the chat closes
Vanish mode is the stricter one. Content sent in it disappears when someone leaves the chat or turns vanish mode off, and nobody can copy, save or forward those messages. You turn it on and off with the same swipe up, and Instagram notifies you when someone sends you a vanish mode message. You'll also be told if they then send you a new message outside vanish mode.
Instagram's page says vanish mode may be unavailable for countries in Europe, and the timer version is only available in certain locations. If the swipe up does nothing in your app, that's the likely reason.
View once, view twice and unlimited views
The third tool is for photos and videos, not text. Before you send, you choose one of three options:
- View once: the person or group receiving it can view it once.
- View twice: it loops, and they can open and replay it one more time before it disappears.
- Unlimited views: a preview image of the photo or video stays visible in the chat thread.
You can only send these to people who follow you or have already approved messages from you. Once sent, you can't view it yourself, but you can see whether it was seen and whether Instagram detected a screenshot. Anything else you send in that chat, such as feed posts, text or hashtags, stays visible as normal.
On the receiving end, you open one from the blue play button beside the chat name, or inside the chat with View photo or Play video, and you can only reply directly while it's playing. For the full sending walkthrough, see my step-by-step guide to sending a disappearing photo.
The professional account problem
Here's the catch for brands. Instagram's Help pages say certain professional accounts can't receive disappearing messages, and certain professional accounts can't receive messages in vanish mode. The pages don't say which ones. So if a customer tries to send your business profile a vanishing message, it may not reach you that way, and you shouldn't offer customers a disappearing chat as a private channel.
There's a second gate too. Accounts you haven't connected with before can't send you message requests as disappearing messages or in vanish mode, so a first enquiry from a stranger always lands as an ordinary request. The rest of your message controls live in your Instagram DM settings.

Screenshots, unsending and reporting after it's gone
None of these tools stops a screenshot. Someone can screenshot or screen record a message, and you'll get a notification if Instagram detects it, but they can also photograph the screen with another device. Instagram's own advice is to use these features only with people you trust. I've explained how Instagram's screenshot alerts work separately.
Reporting still works after a message has gone, which surprises people. You can report a vanish mode message for up to 14 days after it disappears, even though you can't see it any more. After 14 days the report won't include that message. It works because reported messages are decrypted on your device and sent securely to Instagram's Help team, and the report is anonymous unless it's about intellectual property.
- To report one message, tap and hold it in the chat.
- Tap Report and pick the reason. You'll also see options to restrict or block the sender.
- To report the whole chat instead, tap the username at the top, then Options, then Report.
You can't report an entire group chat, only messages, photos, videos and people in it. And unsending is a different thing again: an unsent message leaves the chat, but the other person may already have seen it.
What I'd tell a brand account
I'd keep customer conversations in normal chats. They stay on record, nobody loses the order details, and you don't run into the professional account limits. I'd use a view once photo only for something you'd be happy to see screenshotted anyway. Skip vanish mode for anything to do with orders, complaints or refunds: if there's ever a disagreement, you'll want the history.
If your team handles customers in Instagram messages and wants a clear, simple process for it, that's the kind of social media setup I help with. I run AI training and workshops for teams, and help businesses with AI enablement and workflow automation, so the busywork runs itself and people get time back. Most of that work is with SaaS marketing teams and small businesses. Here's how we can work together.
Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between vanish mode and disappearing messages on Instagram?
Disappearing messages vanish after a timer you set. Vanish mode content disappears when someone leaves the chat or turns vanish mode off, and nobody can copy, save or forward it.
Can a business account receive disappearing messages on Instagram?
Not always. Instagram says certain professional accounts can't receive disappearing messages or messages in vanish mode.
Can you report a vanish mode message after it disappears?
Yes, for up to 14 days after it disappears. After 14 days the report won't include that message.
Can someone screenshot a disappearing message?
Yes. You'll get a notification if Instagram detects a screenshot, but someone can also photograph the screen with another device.
Do disappearing messages work in group chats?
The timer version doesn't. It only works in chats with another Instagram account, not in group chats or chats with Messenger or Facebook accounts.
