What Is YouTube Monetization? (2026) The Partner Program in Plain English

YouTube monetization means earning from your channel through the YouTube Partner Program: you apply, YouTube reviews your channel, and once you're accepted you can switch on ways to earn such as ads, YouTube Premium revenue, channel memberships, Super Chat, Super Thanks and Shopping. Only channels that follow YouTube's channel monetization policies can monetize, and as of October 2026 there are two entry tiers, at 500 and 1,000 subscribers.

Two different things get called monetization, and people mix them up all the time. One is joining the YouTube Partner Program, usually shortened to YPP. The other is switching ads on for a single video, which you do from the Content tab of YouTube Studio once you're in. You can't do the second without the first.

Here's the part that surprises people. Seeing ads on your videos doesn't mean you're earning. YouTube's overview page says its Terms of Service let it serve ads on any content on the platform, and if you don't meet the eligibility criteria for YPP yet, you aren't eligible for a share of that revenue.

Monetization means the Partner Program

YouTube's own wording is simple: you earn on YouTube by applying for and being accepted to the YouTube Partner Program. YouTube reviews your channel before it accepts you, and it says it holds partners to a higher standard than everyone else on the platform.

Inside the programme, these are the ways to earn YouTube lists:

  • Advertising revenue from Watch Page ads and Shorts Feed ads.
  • YouTube Premium revenue: part of a Premium subscriber's fee when they watch your content.
  • Channel memberships: members make recurring monthly payments for perks you offer.
  • Super Chat and Super Stickers: fans pay to highlight their message or an animated image in live chat.
  • Super Thanks: fans pay for an animation and a highlighted comment on your video or Short.
  • Shopping: fans browse and buy from your store, or products you tag from other brands through the YouTube Shopping affiliate programme.

Each feature has its own requirements on top of the subscriber and view counts, and some may not be available where you live because of local legal requirements. Channel memberships, Super Chat and Super Thanks all need you to be at least 18, for example. Shopping needs the subscriber threshold or an Official Artist Channel, and a channel that isn't set as Made for Kids.

Two entry tiers and what each one opens

This is the bit most explainers flatten into one number. YouTube's choose-how-to-monetize page shows two tiers, as of October 2026:

TierSubscribersWatch hours or Shorts viewsWhat opens
Early tier500, plus 3 public uploads in the last 90 days3,000 qualified watch hours on long-form videos in the last 365 days, or 3 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 daysChannel memberships, Super Chat and Super Stickers, Super Thanks, Shopping
Full tier1,0004,000 qualified watch hours on long-form videos in the last 365 days, or 10 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 daysEverything above, plus Watch Page ads, Shorts Feed ads and YouTube Premium revenue

Qualified has a specific meaning. Watch hours count from long-form videos you've set public, and watch hours from Shorts in the Shorts Feed don't count toward the 4,000. Views and watch time from paid ad campaigns don't count either; only Follow-on Views, the organic views you get after someone sees your promoted content, do. My guide to YouTube monetization requirements goes through every threshold and policy in full.

One date to note: YouTube says the entry thresholds for new creators change from 1 February 2027, so check its help page if you're planning around the full tier.

The checklist before you can join

Hitting the numbers isn't enough on its own. YouTube's overview page lists what you need to join:

  • Follow the YouTube channel monetization policies.
  • Live in a country or region where the YouTube Partner Program is available.
  • Have no active Community Guidelines strikes on your channel.
  • Have 2-Step Verification turned on for your Google Account.
  • Have advanced features access on YouTube.
  • Have one active AdSense for YouTube account linked to your channel, or be ready to set one up in YouTube Studio.

AdSense for YouTube is Google's programme that pays creators in YPP, and YouTube says to create a new one only from inside YouTube Studio. If you want to know how the payments then reach your bank, I've covered YouTube payment methods by country separately.

Applying from the Earn tab, step by step

You can apply from a desktop computer or a mobile device. These are YouTube's steps:

  1. Sign in to YouTube.
  2. Click your profile picture in the top right, then YouTube Studio.
  3. In the left menu, click Earn.
  4. Select Apply Now.
  5. Click Start to review and accept the Base terms.
  6. Click Start to set up an AdSense for YouTube account, or link an existing active one.
  7. Look for In Progress in the Get Reviewed step. That means YouTube has your application.

Not there yet? Select Get notified in the Earn area of YouTube Studio and YouTube will email you once you've met either threshold. If you'd rather check today, try the YouTube monetization checker.

Once you're in, the Earn tab is also where you pick your contract modules: the Watch Page Monetization Module for long-form ads, the Shorts Monetization Module for Shorts Feed ads, and the Commerce Product Module for fan funding. Then you turn ads on for each video from the Content tab, by selecting Monetization next to the video, choosing On and saving. Even then, each video goes through a review against YouTube's advertiser-friendly guidelines before ads show.

Review times, rejections and second tries

After you accept the terms and link AdSense, your channel joins a review queue. YouTube's automated systems and human reviewers look at the channel as a whole, and YouTube says you'll typically get a decision in about 1 month. Delays happen when application volumes are high, and channels sometimes need more than one review when reviewers disagree.

Work with me

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

Two details worth knowing. If your counts drop below the threshold while you're waiting, it doesn't matter: you'll still be reviewed. But changing videos to private or deleting them might affect your application.

If your first application fails, you can appeal within 21 days, or keep uploading original content and re-apply after a 30-day period. If it isn't your first rejection, the wait is 90 days. With an active Community Guidelines strike, you can apply once it expires or after a successful appeal.

Acceptance isn't the finish line. YouTube says it continuously checks channels in YPP against its policies, and it may turn off monetization on channels that haven't uploaded a video or posted to the Posts tab for 6 months or more.

Countries named on YouTube's sign-up list

YouTube publishes a list of the countries and areas where you can sign up for the programme. As of October 2026 it names Pakistan, India, the Philippines, Nigeria, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Egypt, Kenya, the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada and Australia, among many others. If your country isn't named on that list, check YouTube's availability page for the latest version, because it changes.

Individual features can still vary by location even where the programme is open. And one thing YouTube flags for everyone: you may be liable to pay taxes in your country of residence on what you earn from YouTube, so check with your local tax authority.

My advice if you're starting out

I'd aim for the 500-subscriber tier first if fan funding suits your audience. Memberships, Super Thanks and Shopping reward a loyal audience, and you reach that tier long before the ads threshold.

Skip paying anyone who promises to get you monetized. Views from paid ad campaigns don't count toward the thresholds, and YouTube's people and systems review your whole channel before they say yes. Original content and a clear channel theme are what get you through.

Frequently asked questions

Is YouTube monetization the same as turning on ads?

No. Monetization starts with being accepted into the YouTube Partner Program. Turning on ads for a video is a setting you use once you're in, from the Content tab of YouTube Studio.

How many subscribers do you need to monetize on YouTube?

As of October 2026, 500 subscribers opens the early tier with fan funding and Shopping, and 1,000 subscribers opens the full tier with ads, each alongside the watch hours or Shorts views that tier needs.

How long does the YouTube Partner Program review take?

YouTube says you'll typically get a decision in about 1 month, with delays possible when application volumes are high.

Do I get paid if ads show on my videos before I'm in YPP?

No. YouTube can serve ads on any content, but you only get a share of ad revenue once you're in the programme and eligible.

Where is the Earn tab in YouTube Studio?

It's in the left menu of YouTube Studio. That's where you apply, track your application, select Get notified and accept the modules that switch each feature on.
