Gemini Chat History (2026): Find, Pin, Rename and Branch Your Old Chats

Your Gemini chat history lives in the side panel at gemini.google.com, with pinned chats at the top of Recent and a Search option for older ones. As of October 2026 those chat features only work on a personal account when Keep Activity is on, and you can pin, rename and branch chats, or ask Gemini itself to look back through past conversations.

Most people only ever scroll the Recent list. There's more in there than that, and a couple of settings decide whether your history exists at all. This guide covers finding and organising chats; if you're here to delete them, that's a separate job with its own guide, linked further down.

Where your past Gemini chats live

  1. On your computer, go to gemini.google.com.
  2. If your chats are hidden, click Menu at the top.
  3. Look in the side panel: pinned chats sit first, then your recent ones.
  4. To find an older chat, choose Search and type a word you remember from it.

The side panel and your Gemini Apps Activity are linked. If activity is deleted, the matching chat disappears from Recent and pinned too. You can see the full activity record from Settings & help, then Activity, which is useful when you're hunting for something you know you asked but can't find in the list.

Pin and rename the chats you return to

Pinning keeps a chat at the top of the Recent section, so the ones you reuse don't sink under a week of quick questions.

  1. In the side panel, under Recent, hover over the chat.
  2. Click More, then Pin. You can edit the chat's name at the same point.
  3. To rename later, hover over the chat, click More, then Rename.
  4. To unpin, hover over the pinned chat and choose Unpin from the same menu.

Rename as you pin. Gemini's automatic titles are fine for a day, but "Brand voice notes" or "Client onboarding checklist" is far easier to find with Search three months on.

Branch a chat without losing the original

Branching creates a new chat from a specific point in a conversation, so you can try a different direction and then go back to the main thread.

  1. On gemini.google.com, open the chat you want to continue.
  2. Below the response you want to branch from, click Menu.
  3. Choose Branch in a new chat.

Google's note on this is useful: deleting a branched chat doesn't delete the original, and deleting the original doesn't delete the branch. I use the idea for things like testing two openings for a proposal. You keep the agreed groundwork in one place and experiment in the branch.

Ask Gemini to search your old conversations

You can also ask Gemini about past chats by topic or timeframe, or ask it to check them before answering. Google's example prompts include "Summarize our discussions of the solar system" and a question about which birthday gift was agreed in an earlier chat. To use it, as of October 2026 you need:

  • A personal Google Account
  • To be 18 or older
  • Keep Activity and Memory both switched on

It isn't available in Live chats, though in a text chat you can ask Gemini to reference a past Gemini Live conversation. To check whether it used your history, look for "Previous chats" under "Sources and related content" below the answer. Google admits that label can occasionally show incorrectly, so treat it as a guide. Memory is its own setting with its own controls, explained in my guide to what Gemini remembers about you, and if you want Gemini drawing on the rest of your Google data, that's covered in my piece on Gemini personal intelligence.

What Keep Activity changes about your history

Keep Activity is the switch behind all of this. On a personal account, the side panel features only work while it's on. Here's how each kind of chat is handled, according to Google's privacy hub:

Chat typeIn your history? How long it's keptUsed to improve Google's AI?
Normal chat, Keep Activity onYesUntil auto-delete: 18 months by default, or 3 or 36 months, or neverCan be, including with human reviewers
Keep Activity offNoUp to 72 hoursNot unless you send feedback
Temporary chatNo, it isn't meant to be remembered72 hours, using the last 24 hours as contextNot used to train Google's AI models
Work or school accountSet by your administratorSet by your administratorDepends on your Workspace edition

One thing to know before you tidy up: deleting a chat from the side panel also deletes anything created in it, such as Canvas docs and apps, plus the related activity. For the deletion steps themselves, use my step-by-step guide to deleting Gemini history.

Work with me

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

Work and school accounts

If you sign in with a work or school account, your Google Workspace administrator controls your Gemini Apps Activity. Google says you can't delete chats yourself, and you may not be able to see or change how long they're kept. If your team needs a different policy, that's a conversation with whoever runs your Workspace.

How I'd organise Gemini chat history

I'd pin the handful of chats you return to every week, such as a brand voice chat or a standing client brief, and rename them so Search finds them. I'd branch rather than start over when you want to test an idea. Skip long single threads that run for months: they're harder to search, and Google's own usage guidance says long chats take more effort because Gemini rereads the history. For the basics of everyday use, my general Gemini guide is the place to start. Features change often, so check Google's help page for the latest.

If you want guidelines on what your team should keep, pin or delete in their AI chats, that's the kind of AI enablement I help with. I run AI training and workshops for teams, and help businesses with AI enablement and workflow automation, so the busywork runs itself and people get time back. Most of that work is with SaaS marketing teams and small businesses. Here's how we can work together.

Frequently asked questions

Where is my Gemini chat history?

On gemini.google.com, in the side panel. Click Menu at the top if it's hidden. Pinned chats sit first, then recent chats, and you can use Search to find older ones.

Why can't I see my Gemini chat history?

On a personal account, Google says the chat features only work when Keep Activity is on. If it's off, or the activity was deleted, those chats won't show in Recent or pinned.

Can I search my old Gemini chats?

Yes. Use the Search option in the side panel, or ask Gemini about past chats directly if you have a personal account, are 18 or older and have Keep Activity and Memory on.

What does branching a Gemini chat do?

It creates a new chat from a specific point in a conversation. Deleting the branch doesn't delete the original, and deleting the original doesn't delete the branch.

Can I delete chats on a work Gemini account?

No. With a work or school account, your Google Workspace administrator controls Gemini Apps Activity and Google says you can't delete chats.
