Global Payroll Software (2026): 8 Platforms for Teams Abroad

The best global payroll software depends on whether you want a provider to employ your people abroad or to run payroll for entities you own. As of Oct 2026, the eight platforms below split between employer of record services and all-in-one HR and payroll suites, listed unranked for small companies paying a team in several countries.

Your first hire in another country raises questions your local payroll can't answer: who pays this person, under which country's rules, and who's responsible if it goes wrong? Global payroll software exists to answer them, but the platforms come at it from different directions.

The eight platforms below are listed alphabetically and in no particular order. Each description comes from the vendor's own website. Payroll rules and employer obligations differ by country, so confirm the details with the vendor and a local adviser before anyone's first payday.

Eight platforms for paying people in other countries

Deel

Best for: Companies paying employees, contractors and EOR workers from one platform, run by their own team or managed for them by the vendor's payroll staff.

G-P

Best for: Businesses that want employer of record and contractor tools to manage a global workforce, with AI-powered help on HR compliance.

Multiplier

Best for: Growing teams wanting employer of record, global payroll and contractor payments together, with employment guides by country.

Oyster

Best for: Teams hiring full-timers or contractors abroad without setting up an entity, through a certified B Corp employer of record.

Playroll

Best for: Firms setting up their own entities abroad with payroll built in, or linking the payroll vendors they already use in several countries.

RemoFirst

Best for: Founders who'd like to employ talent anywhere without multiple entities, with health insurance, visas and background checks on the same platform.

Rippling

Best for: Businesses that want global HR, payroll and compliance in one system, paying international employees and contractors from the same place.

Rivermate

Best for: Small companies wanting a dedicated account manager and human support while they employ and pay people abroad without local entities.

Who employs the person: you or the provider?

This is the split to settle first. With an employer of record, the provider becomes the legal employer in that country and runs payroll as part of the service. G-P builds its offer around employer of record and contractor tools to manage your global workforce, Oyster says it gives you compliant access to talent with no entity required, and RemoFirst says you can employ talent anywhere without multiple entities. The page for Rivermate carries a reminder worth noting: it says three other EOR brands now trade under its name, so check who'll run your service day to day.

The other model is payroll for people you employ through your own entities, plus contractors. Rippling's global payroll page talks about paying employees and contractors around the world in a single system, and Deel's global payroll page sets out end-to-end payroll in one system, with a choice between running it yourself and having the vendor's team run operations for you. Playroll sits across both: it'll help set up global entities with payroll built in, or connect the payroll vendors you already use.

Multiplier's own payroll guide is frank about why this is hard: tax laws, compliance requirements and paying people in different countries all have to line up, and its guide warns that slipping on local regulations brings fines and reputational damage. That's why the model you choose matters more than any single feature.

What a first global payroll run involves

  1. Bring your people onto the platform: who they are, where they work and whether they're employees or contractors.
  2. Set the local pay rules, approvals and cutoffs for each country.
  3. Let the platform calculate gross-to-net pay under local tax rules, then check the results before you approve them.
  4. Run the payroll, pay everyone and file the taxes each country requires.
  5. Track status and changes across countries, and watch for local rule changes as they come through.

None of this replaces local advice. Payroll rules, benefits and employer duties differ from one country to the next, so confirm each new country with the vendor and a local adviser.

Questions to put to a global payroll provider

  • Will you be the legal employer, or will we run payroll through our own entity?
  • Can we pay employees and contractors from the same system?
  • Who files the taxes in each country, and who carries the compliance responsibility?
  • Will we have a named contact, or a support queue?
  • Does it connect with the HR and accounting tools we already use?
  • What happens if we later open our own entity and want to move people across?

My plain advice for your first hire abroad

If you're hiring one or two people in a country where you've got no entity, an employer of record is usually the simpler route: the provider employs them, runs payroll and handles the local paperwork. If you already have entities, or plan to open them, a payroll suite that pays employees and contractors from one system will serve you better as you grow. Either way, ask who carries the compliance responsibility, ask who'll answer when something goes wrong, and get local advice for every new country.

Don't pick on the brand name alone. Book a demo, bring your real hiring plan, and see how each platform handles the countries you need.

Frequently asked questions

What is global payroll software?

It's software that runs payroll for people in more than one country, applying each country's tax rules and paying employees and contractors from one place.

What's the difference between global payroll and an employer of record?

Global payroll pays people you employ through your own entities. An employer of record becomes the legal employer in a country for you, then runs payroll as part of that service.

Do I need a local entity to pay someone abroad?

Not always. An employer of record can employ the person without you opening an entity, and you can often pay contractors without one. Confirm the rules for each country with the vendor and a local adviser.

Can one platform pay employees and contractors?

Several platforms on this list say they pay both from a single system. Check how each one treats contractors in the countries you need.

Who's responsible for payroll compliance abroad?

It depends on the model. With an employer of record, the provider takes on employer duties in that country. When you run payroll through your own entity, more of that responsibility stays with you, so ask each vendor to spell it out.

Is global payroll software only for big companies?

No. Several vendors here describe serving startups and small businesses as well as larger firms, and an employer of record can let a small company make its first hire abroad without opening an entity.
