Game Server Hosting (2026): 10 Providers Compared

Game server hosting means renting a server that runs a multiplayer game for your group, so the world stays online without your own PC. Hosts differ in three ways: how many games they cover, whether you rent a game slot or a whole dedicated machine, and where their servers sit. Ten providers follow, in no particular order.

Running a game server on your own computer works until someone wants to play while you're asleep, or your upload speed can't keep up. That's when renting one starts to make sense, and the choice of host gets wide very quickly.

The ten hosts below are listed alphabetically and in no particular order. Every description comes from each host's own website, read as of Oct 2026. Hosting for one single game is a different search, so the focus here is companies that run servers for many games.

Ten game server hosting companies

BisectHosting

Best for: Groups wanting game servers in 21 locations worldwide, with DDoS protection on all of its gaming servers.

Citadel Servers

Best for: Communities that want managed hosting for new releases such as Hytale and Palworld in over 20 locations, plus website services from the same company.

Fragnet

Best for: Players who'd rather flip switches than edit config files, with a browser file manager and live server stats for each game.

G-Portal

Best for: Console and PC players renting servers for games like Farming Simulator 25 and Enshrouded, from a host that says it has 20 years in game hosting.

GameServers.com

Best for: Clans that want a game server and a TeamSpeak voice server from one host, with locations reaching as far as South Africa.

Ghostcap

Best for: Gamers after high-end hardware, since it lists 16-core processors with up to 5.7GHz boost and locations in the USA and Europe.

GTXGaming

Best for: UK-based groups browsing servers by genre, from survival and sandbox to FPS, military and racing games.

Host Havoc

Best for: Modders who want workshop and mod installers plus automatic backups across 30+ supported games, with Ryzen VPS hosting for bigger projects.

PingPerfect

Best for: Anyone running servers for several games at once, from a host whose page title lists 250+ games.

ScalaCube

Best for: Communities that want to rent a VPS or dedicated server for their games, with unlimited player slots and unlimited traffic.

Slots, whole machines and where the servers sit

Reading the host pages, the first difference is range. BisectHosting says 'Choose from 110+ games' and PingPerfect's title carries '250+ Games', while GTXGaming's title is 'Game Server Hosting UK'. GameServers.com sells 'Teamspeak Hosting' and a 'Dedicated Clan Server Host', and G-Portal simply says 'Rent a gameserver'.

The second difference is what you're renting. ScalaCube's title is 'Game Server Hosting - Virtual & Dedicated', Host Havoc calls itself a 'Game Server and Infrastructure Hosting Provider', and Ghostcap names 'AMD Ryzen 9950X' processors. Citadel Servers lists 'Managed Game Hosting', and Fragnet describes 'Premium Server Hosting - Built for Gamers'.

So the split a new server owner wouldn't guess is this: how many games a host covers, whether you're renting a game slot on shared hardware or a whole machine, and which region the servers are in. Region matters more than most people expect, because a server on the wrong continent adds lag for everyone in the group.

What to check before you rent a game server

  • Your game is supported. Check the host's game list for your exact title and platform, including crossplay or console editions.
  • A location near your players. Pick a data centre close to most of your group. A host with many locations gives you more room to choose.
  • Slots and resources. Some hosts sell by player slots, others by memory or a whole virtual or dedicated machine. Modded servers usually need more memory than vanilla ones.
  • Mod and workshop support. One-click installers save hours if your group plays with mods or custom maps.
  • Backups and DDoS protection. Automatic backups protect your world from a bad update, and DDoS protection keeps a public server online.
  • The control panel. You'll live in it, so look for live stats, a file manager and a console you can use without editing files by hand.

Renting a game slot or a whole server

Most people start with a game slot: the host runs your game on a shared machine and gives you a panel to manage it. It's quick, and you don't need to know anything about Linux. A virtual or dedicated server gives you the whole box to install whatever you like, which suits clans running several games, a voice server and a website together. The trade-off is that you're the admin.

Five things to ask a game host

  1. Which locations can I choose, and can I move the server later?
  2. Is it a shared game slot, a VPS or a dedicated machine?
  3. Are backups automatic, and how do I restore one?
  4. Can I switch the server to a different game without a new order?
  5. How do I reach support, and do they know the game I'm running?

My plain advice on picking a game host

Start with the game and the players, not the host. Check that your exact game and platform are supported, then pick a location close to most of your group, then look at mods, backups and the panel. If you only play one game with a few friends, a shared game slot is plenty. If you're running a clan with several games and a voice server, a host that rents whole virtual or dedicated machines will give you room to grow. Read each host's own page for current game lists and locations before you order, because both change often.

Frequently asked questions

What is game server hosting?

It's renting a server that runs a multiplayer game online all the time, so your friends can join whenever they like without your own PC staying on.

Should I host a game server myself instead?

Hosting at home works if you've got the hardware and upload speed, but your PC has to stay on and you may need to open ports on your router. A rented server stays online and usually adds backups and DDoS protection.

How many players can a game server hold?

It depends on the game and the plan. Some hosts sell by player slots and some list unlimited slots, so check the host's own page for your game.

What's the difference between a game slot and a dedicated game server?

A game slot runs your game on hardware shared with other customers. A dedicated server is a whole machine for you, which suits big communities or several games at once.

Where should my game server be located?

Close to most of your players. Distance adds latency, so a European group should pick a European location and a US group a US one.

Can I run mods on a rented game server?

Usually, yes. Many hosts include mod or workshop installers, but support varies by game, so check the host's page for your exact title.
