To add another Gmail account in the Gmail app, tap your profile picture at the top right of the search bar, tap Add another account, then Google, and follow the steps. On a computer, as of October 2026, you go to Settings, See all settings, then the Accounts and Import tab and Add a mail account, and either way Gmail lets you add up to 5 email addresses.
The catch that sends people round in circles: on a computer, you can't add an Outlook account to Gmail. Google says Microsoft now requires non-Microsoft email apps to use modern authentication, so for Outlook you have to use the Gmail app instead. The app has its own gap too. It can't add Exchange or POP accounts.
App or browser: which one can add what
| Account you want to add | Gmail app (iPhone, Android) | Gmail on a computer |
|---|---|---|
| Another Gmail address | Yes, through Add another account | Yes, by importing it with POP |
| Outlook | Yes, set up automatically | No, as of October 2026 |
| Yahoo or iCloud Mail | Yes, set up automatically | Yes, if the account has POP access |
| Exchange or POP accounts | No | POP only |
| Other providers | Yes, manually with IMAP settings | Yes, with POP and a secure connection |
Add a second Gmail address on iPhone or iPad
- On your iPhone or iPad, open the Gmail app.
- At the top right, in the search bar, tap Profile.
- Tap Add another account, then Google.
- Follow the on-screen steps to sign in to the account.
If the account has 2-Step Verification, Google asks you to complete a second step. On iPhone you verify your identity from a prompt on your device.
Add a second Gmail address on Android
- On your Android phone or tablet, open the Gmail app.
- At the top right, in the search bar, tap Profile.
- Tap Add another account, then Google.
- Follow the steps on the screen.
Adding Outlook, Yahoo or another non-Gmail address in the app
For providers like Outlook, iCloud Mail and Yahoo, the app can set the account up for you. Tap Profile, then Add another account, pick the provider from the list and follow the steps. If your other account has extra security, you may be asked to verify your identity, and Google suggests using an alternative sign-in method such as an app password.
If your provider isn't listed, set it up by hand with its IMAP settings, which you'll find in that provider's help section. Google's example settings are imap.mail.com as the server, port 993 and SSL/TLS as the security type. The manual steps differ slightly by phone:
- iPhone or iPad: tap Profile, then Add another account and Other (IMAP). Enter your full email address, tap Next, then enter the IMAP settings.
- Android: tap Profile, then Add another account and Other. Enter your full email address, tap Next, select Personal (IMAP), enter your password, tap Next, then enter the IMAP settings.
Seeing every inbox together, or removing one
Once you've added more than one account, you can read everything in one place. In the app, tap Menu at the top left, then All inboxes.
To take an account off your phone, tap Profile, then Manage accounts on this device. On iPhone, tap Remove from this device next to the account, then Remove to confirm. On Android, select the account and tap Remove to confirm.
Pulling another account into Gmail on a computer
On a computer this works differently. Rather than switching between accounts, you bring another account's mail into one Gmail inbox. Before you start, Google lists three conditions: the other account must support secure connections, it needs POP access turned on, and you can import messages but not folders or labels. Google also notes it's making changes to Gmailify and POP support, so check its notice if something looks different.
If the account you're importing from is another Gmail address, turn on POP there first. In that account, go to Settings, See all settings, then the Forwarding and POP/IMAP tab, choose Enable POP for all mail and click Save Changes. Google recommends selecting Keep Gmail's copy in the inbox. Then, in the account you're importing to:
- At the top right, click Settings, then See all settings.
- Click the Accounts and import or Accounts tab.
- In the Check mail from other accounts section, click Add a mail account.
- Type the other email address and click Next.
- If prompted, choose whether to link with Gmailify or import your emails.
- Enter the username and password, choose your settings and click Add Account.
Google recommends ticking Always use a secure connection (SSL) when retrieving mail, and Label incoming messages, so you can tell which account each email came from.
Gmailify: the extra option for Yahoo, AOL, Outlook and Hotmail
For some accounts, Gmail offers Gmailify, which links the other address and adds Gmail features to it: spam protection, better notifications on mobile, sorting into tabs like Social, Updates and Promotions, and faster search. There are a few side effects. Linking another account might push you to your storage limit. Trash follows the other service's empty trash limit rather than Gmail's 30-day one. Archived mail goes to a new Archive folder in the other account, and every label becomes a folder there, so adding several labels to one message creates several copies.
If you change your mind, you can unlink. In Settings, See all settings, then Accounts and Import, click unlink in the Check mail from other accounts section. Gmail then asks whether to keep or delete the copies of that account's messages. If you delete them, you can still read them in the other service. If you keep them, they stay in Gmail, but anything you move or delete there won't be reflected in the other account.

Moving your old emails across for good
If you're leaving an old address behind rather than running both, Gmail has a separate import that brings your old emails over.
- On your computer, open Gmail.
- At the top right, click Settings, then See all settings.
- Click the Accounts and import tab.
- Click Import mail and contacts and follow the on-screen steps.
- Click Start import.
Your new Gmail address is visible for 60 days, or until you delete the reminder. If you stop an import and still get emails, sign in to the other account and turn off automatic forwarding there.
Fixing errors when an account won't add
- Click Show error details first to see what's wrong.
- If POP is disabled, turn it on in the other account. If it's unavailable, your provider doesn't support it, so import old emails or set up forwarding instead.
- If you use 2-Step Verification, create an app password.
- For a work or school account, Google's suggested POP server is mail.domain.com on port 110, or pop.gmail.com on port 995 if the domain uses Google MX records.
- In the app, an Email security not guaranteed warning means the other service doesn't use the highest level of security. You can carry on by setting Security type to None, but Google warns someone could potentially find your username, password or messages.
A Certificate not trusted error, or one saying the certificate's expired, changed, missing or doesn't match the hostname, means the other service isn't using a secure, valid certificate. Google's fix is to report it to that provider: tap More info in the error, then More and Share at the top right.
After an import, Google says Gmail forwards messages sent to your other account for 30 days. To stop an import, go back to Check mail from other accounts and click Delete next to the account.
My verdict on adding accounts to Gmail
I'd add your second Gmail address in the app if you just want to flick between work and personal mail on your phone, because nothing gets merged. I'd use the computer import only if you're moving away from an old address for good. And I'd skip the Security type None workaround unless you've no other choice. If you also use Outlook, here's how to add an email account to Outlook, and if you ever share a device, know how to log out of Gmail.
