AI receptionist software answers your business phone when you can't, so callers get a reply instead of voicemail. It comes in three kinds, as of Oct 2026: ready-made AI receptionists you switch on, human or hybrid answering services, and voice-agent platforms a developer builds on. Ten options follow in no particular order.
Missed calls hurt a small business more than most owners realise, because a caller who reaches voicemail can simply ring someone else. An AI receptionist is meant to fix that, but the products sold under that name do very different jobs.
The ten options below are listed alphabetically and in no particular order. Every description comes from each provider's own website, as of Oct 2026, and this page covers what the providers say they do, nothing more.

Ready-made receptionist, human service or voice-agent platform?
Here's what each provider's own page says. Rosie says it's trained on your business and handles answering questions, booking appointments, and texting you the details of every call. Goodcall calls itself an AI answering service and receptionist for small business, Upfirst is an AI answering service and virtual receptionist, and My AI Front Desk shows its AI receptionist answering an inbound call and qualifying the lead.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
The human side looks different. Smith.ai sells AI receptionists and live human agents, Abby Connect's page offers human, AI or both, and AnswerConnect is a 24/7 live call answering service. Then there's Retell AI, which sells AI voice agents that automate phone calls, and Bland AI, an enterprise voice AI platform for phone agents. Those last two are platforms you build on, not receptionists you switch on, and that split decides the right choice far more than any feature list does.
What an AI receptionist handles on a typical call
- Answering and FAQs. It picks up, greets the caller in your business's name and answers common questions from the information you've given it.
- Booking. Many connect to a calendar and book the appointment while the caller's still on the line.
- Lead capture. It asks the questions you'd ask a new enquiry, then passes the details on, often by text.
- Handover. Some setups transfer a caller to a person when the AI can't help, which matters when a call is urgent or awkward.
- Call records. You get a summary of each call, so nothing gets lost between jobs.
Questions to ask before a provider answers your phone
- Is it AI only, humans only, or a mix you can change?
- Can it book straight into the calendar you already use?
- How does it hand a caller to a person when the AI can't help?
- Will it text or email you a summary of every call?
- Can you ring a live demo and hear it before you sign up? Several providers put a demo number on their home page.
- Does it record calls? Check the rules where you and your callers are before you switch recording on.

My plain advice on choosing an AI receptionist
Start with the calls you're missing. If they're simple, like bookings, opening hours and new enquiries, a ready-made AI receptionist is the quickest fix, and you can often hear one on a demo line before you commit. If your callers are upset, complicated or high stakes, a human or hybrid service is the safer route. Only pick a voice-agent platform if you've got a developer and want to build something of your own. Whichever you choose, ring it yourself as a customer before you put it on your main number.
Leaning towards the build-your-own side? My list of AI voice agents for small business covers that ground.

Frequently asked questions
What is AI receptionist software?
It's software that answers your business phone with an AI voice, answers common questions, books appointments and passes on messages, so callers don't end up in voicemail.
Is an AI receptionist the same as an answering service?
Not always. Answering services have traditionally meant human receptionists. Some providers now offer AI, humans or a mix, so check which one will pick up your calls.
Can an AI receptionist book appointments?
Many can. Several providers on this list say theirs books appointments during the call. Check that it connects to the calendar you already use.
Can an AI receptionist transfer a call to a person?
Some can. At least one provider on this list says its AI transfers callers to a live person when needed, so ask each provider how handover works.
Can I record calls with an AI receptionist?
Check the rules where you and your callers are before you switch recording on. I'm not giving legal advice here, so read the provider's own guidance too.
What's the difference between an AI receptionist and a voice-agent platform?
An AI receptionist is ready to switch on for a small business. A voice-agent platform gives developers the parts to build their own phone agents, which takes more set-up.
