Where to Get Free New Year Clipart and Backgrounds (2026): Images for Posts, Flyers and Cards

Wikimedia Commons is the deepest free source of New Year images, with 114 files in its New Year category, 102 in New Year's Eve and 45 in Happy New Year when I checked. Add the Library of Congress Holidays set for vintage New Year's Eve posters and photos, the Cleveland Museum of Art for CC0 artwork, and Openclipart for public domain vector clipart you can edit for a post, flyer, slide or card.

New Year graphics have a short, frantic window: the last week of December and the first week of January. Everyone wants the same fireworks shot at the same time. If you want yours to look different, archives are a clever place to look, as long as you know which licence you're dealing with.

Wikimedia Commons New Year categories

When I checked, the New Year category held 114 files and 15 subcategories, New Year's Eve 102 files and 10 subcategories, and Happy New Year 45 files and 5 subcategories. Lunar New Year has its own separate category, so look there if that's your celebration.

The subcategories are where it gets interesting. New Year celebrations is the big one, with 281 files and 57 subcategories of its own. New Year's Day held 77 files and New Year's resolutions 11, which is handy for a January goals post. There's even a small Food menus for Christmas and New Year category with 4 files, perfect inspiration for a restaurant's party night.

One thing that doesn't exist: a Fireworks on New Year's Eve category. You'll find fireworks inside the celebration subcategories instead.

As always on Commons, the licence is set file by file. Some require a credit, some require you to name the licence, and some require edited versions to be shared under the same licence. Personality rights can also apply to photos of people celebrating, so take extra care with crowd shots used in an advert.

Vintage New Year's Eve at the Library of Congress

The Library of Congress Holidays set, part of its rights-free Free to Use and Reuse collection, has a run of New Year pictures with real character:

  • A New Year reception at the White House, with thousands of citizens waiting to be received
  • Vaudeville frolic, a gala midnight show poster for New Year's eve with 15 acts
  • New Year's eve at the hotel prosperity, a cartoon by Kep.
  • Blowing horns in a New York street on New Year's Day
  • The Mummers Parade on New Year's day in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

The Library's Winter set adds two more: World peace with liberty and prosperity, 1919, Happy New Year, a World War I poster from 1918, and an ice hill in Theater Square for the 1999 New Year's celebration in Arkhangelsk, Russia, photographed by William C. Brumfield in 1998. That vaudeville poster would make a brilliant background for a party night flyer.

Cleveland Museum of Art: new year and fireworks

The Cleveland Museum of Art's open access works marked CC0 need no attribution or citation. When I searched its open access data for works with images, new year returned 160 results and fireworks 14.

That 160 needs a little context. The search matches the phrase in the record, and it also picks up other new year festivals, not only 31 December. So browse it as a source of celebration art, and pick the pieces that fit your audience.

Openclipart for New Year vectors

Openclipart holds more than 180,000 vector graphics, all public domain under CC0, and says you may use them even for unlimited commercial use. They're SVG files, which can be scaled, edited or printed without deformation, so you can change the colours to your brand and resize them for a story, a banner or a printed card. There's no need to cite Openclipart, though crediting the artist is a nice touch.

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

Making a Happy New Year graphic in five steps

  1. Pick one image: a vintage poster, a celebration photo or a simple vector.
  2. Read the licence on its item or file page and copy the credit details into a note.
  3. Crop for the format you need and leave clear space for your words.
  4. Add the greeting and your business name in a plain, readable font. Keep it short.
  5. Save versions for your feed, stories and email header, so you're not resizing at midnight.

My recommendation for New Year images

I'd use the Library of Congress Holidays set if you want a New Year post that people stop for, because a vaudeville midnight show poster beats the fireworks stock shot every time. I'd use Openclipart if you need clean vectors for a card or a banner. Skip the Cleveland results if you're short on time, because you'll need to sift them. And make your graphic before Christmas. Nobody wants to be cropping images on the 31st.
