To delete a tweet, go to your profile, find the post, tap the icon at the top of it, choose Delete post and tap Delete to confirm. It disappears from your profile, your followers' timelines and X search, but copies other people made and caches on other websites don't go with it.
Deleting is quick. Knowing what it does and doesn't remove is the part worth reading, especially if you're deleting something you regret. Here's how it works on X (formerly Twitter) as of October 2026, from X's own Help Center.
Steps to delete a single post
- In the top menu, tap your profile icon.
- Tap Profile.
- Find the post you want to delete.
- Tap the icon at the top of the post.
- Tap Delete post.
- Tap Delete to confirm.
You can delete any of your own posts at any time, and X reflects the change on x.com, X for iOS and X for Android. You can't delete posts other accounts made, even if they're on your timeline. For those, X's options are to unfollow, block or mute the account.
What deleting a post removes, and what it can't touch
| Gone when you delete | Not removed |
|---|---|
| The post on your account | Posts where someone copied and pasted your text |
| The post on your followers' timelines | Quote posts, where someone reposted you with their own comment |
| The post in X search on x.com, iOS and Android | Copies cached or cross-posted on third-party websites and apps |
| Plain reposts of it | Results in outside search engines |
| Its contents, metadata and analytics, publicly | Anything outside x.com, X for iOS and X for Android |
That right-hand column is the insight. X says plainly that it can't remove posts that aren't on x.com, X for iOS or X for Android. So if a post has already been quoted or copied, deleting yours removes the original but leaves the quote posts standing. If it matters, you'll need to ask the people who quoted it.
Before you delete, it's worth seeing who's already shared it. X says the post's detail page shows how many reposts and quote posts it has: tap the Reposts tab to see who reposted it, or the Quote posts tab to see who quoted it. Your Notifications tab also shows recent reposts and who made them.
If you're curious what other people can still find, here's more on what happens to deleted tweets.
Removing a repost or a quote post
A repost isn't deleted, it's undone. Find the repost, tap the highlighted Repost icon, then tap Undo Repost. It comes off your profile timeline and other timelines, but X notes it may still show on mobile devices displaying cached timelines, or in cross-posts to third-party sites. Undoing your repost doesn't delete the original post.
A quote post is your own post, so you delete it like any other: tap the icon at the top of it and choose Delete Post.
One more thing that surprises people. If the original author deletes their post, or their account is deleted or suspended, X says your repost won't be available any more. You didn't do anything wrong; it went with the original.
Delete, Undo post or Edit: which one you need
X has three ways to fix a post, and they work at different moments.
| Option | When it works | Who gets it | What people see |
|---|---|---|---|
| Delete | Any time | Everyone | The post is gone from X |
| Undo post | In the seconds after you tap post, before it goes live | X Premium | Nothing, if you undo in time |
| Edit post | Up to 1 hour after posting, up to 5 edits | X Premium and the Plus, Premium, Super and Ultra plans | An edited label, and anyone can view earlier versions |
How Undo post works
Undo post holds your post back for a countdown before it appears. The default is 30 seconds, and you can change it to 5, 10, 20 or 60 seconds in the X Premium settings. Tapping Undo takes you back to the composer, or you can tap Send now to skip the wait. It can be switched on for original posts, quote posts, threads and replies. X is clear that it isn't an edit button: once the countdown ends, the post is live and you can only leave it or delete it.
Why editing doesn't hide a mistake
Edit post gives you a 1 hour window and up to 5 edits on original posts and quotes. But X says everyone can see the edited label, and everyone can click in to see previous versions. So if you posted something you want gone, editing just adds a visible history. Delete it instead.

Editing also has gaps. X says you can't currently edit threads, replies, promoted posts, polls, pinned posts, subscriber posts, posts from a third-party service, or posts sent via X Pro, and you have to edit from the same device you posted from. There's more on the edit button and its time limit if you need it.
Deleting more than one post
X says it doesn't provide a way to bulk-delete posts. You can only delete them one by one. Its own suggestion for a fresh start without losing your username is to create another account with a temporary username, then swap usernames between the two. If you're facing hundreds of posts, here's how to delete all your tweets at once.
My take
I'd delete fast if a post is wrong or hurtful, because every minute it's live is a minute someone can quote it, and quotes don't vanish when you delete. If you post a lot and make typos, turn on Undo post if you're on Premium. It's the only option that stops a mistake before anyone sees it.

Frequently asked questions
Can I delete someone else's tweet?
No. X says you can only delete posts you've posted. For other accounts, you can unfollow, block or mute them.
Does deleting a tweet remove quote tweets of it?
No. X says if people reposted your post with a comment of their own, their posts won't be removed. Plain reposts of your post are removed.
Can I recover a tweet after deleting it?
X's delete article doesn't offer a way to restore a deleted post. Once deleted, its contents and analytics are no longer publicly available on X.
Can I delete all my tweets at once on X?
X says it doesn't provide a way to bulk-delete posts. You can only delete posts manually, one by one.
Is Undo post the same as deleting?
No. Undo post is an X Premium feature that pulls a post back during a short countdown before anyone sees it. Deleting removes a post that's already live.
