Instagram Instants are quick, unfiltered photos you share with your Close Friends or with followers you follow back, and each one can be opened just once before it disappears. It's a feature inside your Instagram inbox, sitting as a mini stack of photos in the bottom right corner, and there's also a separate Instants app being tested in select countries.
Instagram launched Instants on 13 May 2026, describing it on its blog as a new way to share spontaneous photos with friends that disappear once they've been viewed. The detail below is from that post and Instagram's Help Centre, as of October 2026.
Here's what most people get wrong: you don't need to download anything. The Instants feature is available globally inside the Instagram app, and the standalone Instants app is only an experiment in some countries on iOS and Android. The second surprise is that you'll never see a list of who opened your instants. Instagram only tells you when someone reacts or replies.

Inside Instagram or a separate app?
Instants lives in two places. The main one is your Instagram inbox: open Messages, tap the small stack of photos in the bottom right corner and the camera opens.
The second is the Instants app. Instagram's Help Centre says you sign in with your Instagram account and allow camera access, then pick your audience, Close Friends or Friends, at the bottom of the screen. Photos you share from the app still land in people's Instagram inbox, so your friends don't need the app to see them.
One setting worth knowing about in the app: by default it saves your instants to your phone's camera roll. To stop that, tap your profile photo, tap Settings in the top left, tap Save to photos and switch off Save instants to photos.
Instagram also says Instants isn't currently available for everyone, so a missing stack may simply mean it hasn't reached you yet. And it's phone only: the Help Centre says the feature isn't available on computers.
How to post an instant
Instagram's Help Centre gives these steps for the Instagram app on iPhone and Android:
- Tap Messages at the bottom of the screen.
- Tap Instants on the right of your inbox.
- Add a caption if you want one. Do it now, because it can't be added afterwards.
- Rotate the camera if you'd rather show your face than the view.
- Choose your audience: Close Friends or Friends.
- Tap the camera button. The photo is shared straight away and appears in your friends' inboxes, bottom right.
The caption order catches people out. Instagram's blog says that, unlike stories, you write the caption before you take the photo, and you can't edit an instant once it's taken. You can tap the white button as many times as you like.
Who gets to see what you share
Only the people you pick. Instagram says instants can be seen by your Close Friends list or by your friends, which it defines as followers you follow back. Both lists already exist on your account.
If you want tighter control, tidy your Close Friends list first. You'll find it under Profile, Menu, then Close friends under Who can see your content. Instagram's Help Centre says people aren't notified when you add or remove them and nobody can ask to be added. I've written more on that in whether Instagram tells people you've removed them from Close Friends.
Block, mute and restrict all apply to instants too, so you can limit instants from specific friends without unfollowing them. Blocking someone on Instagram also blocks them on Instants, and the other way round.
One view, 24 hours, then gone
Each instant can be viewed once. When it's gone, Instagram says that account can't view it again, on Instants or on Instagram. And there's a time limit: others can open your instants within 24 hours of when they were shared.
Friends see a preview before opening, then can react or reply. A reaction sends you a notification. A text reply arrives as a normal message between you and that person, so the conversation carries on in your DMs.
If that one-view rule feels harsh, it's worth knowing how differently stories behave. Here's what's possible with rewatching a story after it disappears.
How to undo or delete an instant
Timing decides which of the two fixes you use. Deleting can't reach someone who's already opened it.

- Straight away: tap Undo below the camera button. Instagram's blog says the undo button appears the moment you share, before the photo reaches your friends.
- Later: open your archive in the top right of Instants, tap the photo, then tap More in the top right and delete it. Deleting an instant from your archive unshares it, so anyone who hasn't opened it yet can't see it.
Your private archive and the recap
Every instant you share is saved to a private archive that only you can see, for up to a year. You'll find it in the top right of Instants. Tap any photo there and Instagram shows you when it was shared, which list it went to and who reacted.
From the archive you can also save a photo, or tap Create recap to compile instants into a recap and post it to your stories. That recap goes to all your followers, not just the friends who saw the originals, so check who's in the photos before you post it.
Screenshots, privacy and the fine print
Instagram's two sources say slightly different things here. The blog says instants can't be screenshot or screen recorded. The Help Centre adds a warning: someone could still photograph an instant with a camera or another device before it goes away.
The Help Centre's advice is plain: use instants with people you trust. It also says that by using Instants you acknowledge Meta will use instants for things like personalising suggestions and ads under Meta's Privacy Policy.
Instants for teens and parents
If you supervise a teen's account, you don't need to set anything up again. Instagram says supervision through Family Centre extends to Instants automatically. Parents of supervised teens are also notified the first time their teen downloads the Instants app.
- Daily time limit: teens default to a 1-hour daily limit, and time spent in Instants counts towards it.
- Sleep mode: on by default from 22:00 to 07:00, with notifications muted.
- Who can reach them: people a teen doesn't follow back can't share instants with them or see theirs.
My verdict
Instants is the most casual thing Instagram has built in a long while, and that's the point. Use it for the throwaway moments you'd never bother putting in a story, and keep it to people you'd happily hand your phone to. My advice: check your Close Friends list before your first share, remember the caption comes first, and if you'd rather not see other people's stacks at all, you can hide the Instants stack in your inbox.

Frequently asked questions
What are Instagram Instants?
Instants are quick photos you share with your Close Friends or followers you follow back. Each one can be opened once, and unopened instants can be opened within 24 hours of sharing. Instagram launched the feature on 13 May 2026.
Is Instants a separate app?
It's both. The Instants feature is built into the Instagram inbox and available globally. A separate Instants app is an experiment in select countries on iOS and Android, and photos shared there still show up in your friends' Instagram inbox.
Can people see who viewed my instant?
No. Instagram says information on who viewed the instants you've shared isn't available. You're notified when people react to or reply to your photo.
How long do instants last?
Each instant can be opened once, and others can open your instants within 24 hours of when they were shared. Your own copy stays in a private archive for up to a year.
Can I delete or undo an instant?
Yes. Tap Undo below the camera button right after sharing, or delete the photo from your archive later. Deleting unshares it, so anyone who hasn't opened it can't see it.
Can you screenshot an Instagram Instant?
Instagram's blog says instants can't be screenshot or screen recorded. Its Help Centre warns that someone could still photograph an instant with another device, so only share with people you trust.
