Squarespace Payments is Squarespace's own payment processor, which lets you take card payments and digital wallets on your site and manage payments, payouts, refunds and disputes from the Finance panel. You need a trial or paid Squarespace site in a supported country, site owner or administrator permissions, and you must be 18 or older to sign up.
Here's the part that catches new sellers. You can only connect a bank account after your first sale, and your first payout then has an 8 to 12 day holding period that starts once the bank account links successfully. If you have a Squarespace Balance account, that first hold is 7 days. There's no holding period if you already had Stripe connected and switched over. Plan your launch cash flow around that gap.
Who can use it and what it covers
As of October 2026, Squarespace Payments is available to sellers based in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and a list of European countries, and you need to be based in the country where you signed up. You can still sell internationally. It works for online store orders and pricing plan blocks, including one-time purchases, subscriptions, course pages, video pages, member sites and donations. It isn't available for Acuity Scheduling. Each Payments account connects to one website only, so a second site needs its own account, though you can use the same tax ID for both.
Card brands include Visa, Mastercard, AMEX and Discover, and wallets and other methods include Apple Pay, Google Pay, Klarna and Link, varying by country. US sellers can add ACH Direct Debit, but only for larger orders and not for subscriptions, pricing plans, paywalled content or recurring donations; ACH payments and refunds take four to five business days. You can keep accepting PayPal alongside it. If you're weighing processors, my Stripe or PayPal comparison sets out the trade-offs.
How to set up Squarespace Payments
- If your site is private or password protected, set Site Availability to Public first, or the sign-up form rejects your website as incomplete. You can make it private again afterwards.
- Open the Finance panel and click Get started. If you use Stripe, follow the switch steps instead.
- Enter your business and personal details. The person who signs up becomes the Payments Manager.
- Click Agree and submit, then complete two-factor authentication when asked.
- Verify your identity through Plaid with a photo ID and a selfie, or email to request manual verification, which can take up to two weeks.
- After your first sale, connect a checking or current account in your name or your business's name. Savings accounts aren't accepted.
US sellers should enter their legal name, address and tax ID exactly as they appear on the IRS SS-4 confirmation letter or Letter 147C, capitals and punctuation included. A brand new EIN can take up to two weeks to reach the IRS's permanent records, so verifying too early can fail. Sole proprietors and single-member LLCs using a Social Security number must set the legal business name to their personal name and show the brand as a DBA.
Who controls what
This is where shared businesses get stuck. The Payments Manager holds the financial controls, and only one person can hold that role at a time.
| Task, as of October 2026 | Store Manager | Owner or Admin | Payments Manager |
|---|---|---|---|
| Create a Payments account for a website | No | Yes | Yes |
| See the Payments, Payouts and Overview dashboard | No | No | Yes |
| Connect or change the payout bank account | No | No | Yes |
| Issue refunds | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Turn alternative payment methods on or off | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Download the 1099-K form | No | No | Yes |
The Payments Manager can hand the role to a Site Owner or Administrator after setup, with two-factor authentication. If that person has left the business, you'll need Squarespace support to complete the transfer.
Payouts and instant payouts
Payouts are created daily and usually reach your bank within 1 to 5 business days, depending on your bank and country. US payouts take 1 to 2 business days to process; Canada, the UK and EU take 1 to 4. A payout that fails three times blocks the bank account until you reconnect it. If your site is cancelled or expires, Payments is disabled but payouts still go through, and you can still issue refunds and manage disputes. Payouts only go to a bank account, never to PayPal.
Instant payouts usually arrive within 30 minutes for a service fee, but they're only open to existing sellers in the US, UK and Europe with enough processing history, and each site has its own limits. If you're comparing this with Stripe's schedule, see my guide to Stripe payouts.
Disputes, negative balances and reserves
When a customer disputes a charge, the disputed amount and a fee come straight out of your balance. You'll get reminders five days and two days before the deadline, which is typically 20 to 45 days, and a decision usually takes 60 to 75 days. Once a dispute is open, you can't refund that transaction, whatever the outcome, and the bank's ruling is final. Evidence uploads are capped at 4.5 MB in total.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
If refunds or chargebacks leave your balance below zero at the end of the day, the shortfall is auto-debited from your bank the next business day. If a failed auto-debit isn't resolved within 20 business days, the account is suspended and your store can't take payments. Squarespace can also place a reserve, a temporary hold on part of your funds, for reasons such as long delivery windows, many unfulfilled orders, high disputes or a sudden spike in sales. You'll get an email first setting out the terms.
My verdict on Squarespace Payments
I'd use Squarespace Payments if you sell on one Squarespace site and want payments, payouts and disputes in the same dashboard you already use. I'd keep Stripe if you run several sites from one processor account, because each Squarespace Payments account covers one website only. Either way, show your refund and shipping policies clearly, keep proof of delivery and answer disputes fast. Before you switch, compare plans in this Squarespace pricing breakdown.
Payment admin is one of the easiest places for a small business to win back time, from dispute evidence to payout reconciliation. I run AI training and workshops for teams, and help businesses with AI enablement and workflow automation, so the busywork runs itself and people get time back. Most of that work is with SaaS marketing teams and small businesses. Here's how we can work together.
Frequently asked questions
How long is the first Squarespace Payments payout hold?
Your first payout has an 8 to 12 day holding period that starts once your bank account connects, or 7 days with a Squarespace Balance account. There's no hold if you switched from a connected Stripe account.
Can I use Squarespace Payments and Stripe together?
No. Connecting Squarespace Payments replaces Stripe on your site. Your Stripe account is detached, and saved subscription payment methods move over once the data import finishes, which can take up to 10 days.
Can I refund a payment that's being disputed?
No. Once a dispute is opened for a transaction, you can't refund it, regardless of whether you win the dispute.
Can one Squarespace Payments account cover two websites?
No. Each Squarespace Payments account can only be connected to one website, so each site needs its own account.
What happens if my Squarespace Payments balance goes negative?
If it's below zero at the end of the day, the amount is debited from your connected bank account the next business day. An unresolved failed auto-debit leads to suspension after 20 business days.
