Google Calendar notifications reach you three ways: by email, as desktop notifications that pop up outside your browser while Calendar is open, and as alerts inside the Calendar window. You set them for all your events under Settings, then Notification settings, or for one event from its Notifications line, and your choices only ever affect your own account.
Here's the catch. Snooze only works in the Chrome browser, and if an event has several notification times, the Snooze option only shows on the last one. And when desktop alerts go missing, the cause is usually your browser or operating system blocking them, not Calendar itself.
The three kinds of Calendar notification
| As of October 2026 | Where it shows | What it needs |
|---|---|---|
| Your inbox | Nothing extra. If you don't use Calendar, you still get emails when someone creates, updates or deletes an event you're invited to | |
| Desktop notification | Pops up outside your web browser | Calendar open in a browser, with calendar.google.com allowed to show notifications |
| Alert | Inside the Google Calendar window | Calendar open |
Your notification settings are personal. Nobody else can change them, including people you share your calendar with or people who can edit its events, and your settings don't change anyone else's notifications. One exception's worth knowing: with a work or school account, your admin can change events on your calendar, and you won't get a notification when they do.
Setting defaults for every event
You need Calendar open in a web browser, such as Chrome or Safari, to change these settings. If you're asked to let calendar.google.com show notifications, allow it.
- On your computer, open Google Calendar.
- At the top right, click the Settings menu, then Settings.
- On the left, under General, click Notification settings.
- Use the Notifications drop-down to choose how you want to receive them.
- To set the timing of snoozed notifications, turn on Desktop notifications, click Show snoozed notifications and pick your timing.
- To cut the noise, tick the box that limits notifications to events you've answered Yes or Maybe to.
Calendar-level settings decide the notifications for new events unless you customise one event. For a calendar you own, click it under Settings for my calendars and edit the Event notifications and All-day event notifications sections. You can choose a notification or an email, change how far in advance it arrives, add another with Add notification or drop one with Remove notification.
Changing reminders on one event
- On your computer, open Google Calendar, click the event and click Edit event.
- Next to Notifications, choose a notification or an email and how far in advance you want it.
- Click Add notification for a second reminder, or Remove to drop one.
- At the top, click Save.
Turning down the email flood
Calendar can email you about specific changes. Under Settings for my calendars, click the calendar, then Other notifications, and next to each category, such as Changed events or Event responses, choose Email or None. To stop reply emails for just one event or series, open it, click Edit, untick Get an email when guests respond and save.
That second switch has side effects. You won't get emails when guests accept, decline or say maybe, you won't see RSVP statuses from people on other calendars like Outlook, and automatic replies such as out of office messages won't reach you. Guests who use Google Calendar still show their answer in the guest list. If you're the one inviting, here's my walkthrough on sending a Google Calendar invite.
Sorting Calendar emails with Gmail filters
This is the trick most people never find. Every Calendar email carries a hidden header called X-Google-Calendar-Notification, which Gmail can read. Put header:X-Google-Calendar-Notification: in front of a search token and you can filter one type of update.
| Search token | What it catches |
|---|---|
| eventCreated | New event invitation sent |
| eventCancelled | Event cancelled |
| timeOrRecurrenceUpdated | Time or recurrence rules changed |
| locationUpdated | Location changed |
| conferenceUpdated | Video conferencing link updated |
| rsvpDeclined | Guest declined |
| rsvpWithNote | Guest included a note with their reply |
| rsvpProposeNewTime | Guest proposed a new meeting time |
| roomDeclined | Meeting room declined the booking |
- Open Gmail on your computer and type a query in the search box, such as header:X-Google-Calendar-Notification:rsvpDeclined.
- On the right of the search box, click Show search options.
- At the bottom of the window, click Create filter.
- Choose the action, such as archive, label or delete, and click Create filter.
Google's own example labels declines that include a note as Urgent RSVPs and archives the routine accepts and maybes, so only the replies that need you stay in your inbox.
Why notifications go missing
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| No desktop pop-ups at all | Browser isn't allowed to notify | In Chrome, Settings, Privacy and security, Site settings, Notifications: add calendar.google.com under Allowed to send notifications |
| Pop-ups stopped after closing the tab | Calendar isn't open | Keep Google Calendar open in your browser |
| Nothing during a full-screen app, screen share or game on Windows 10 | Focus Assist | Open Windows Settings, then Focus Assist; options turned on block delivery |
| Alerts vanish on Windows 10 | Stored after a period of inactivity | Look in the Action Center |
| Hidden on a Mac | Sitting in the Notification Center | Check it; if it's empty, restart it in System Preferences |
| Silent on a projector with a Mac | Off by default when mirroring | System Preferences, Notifications and Focus, select When mirroring or sharing the display |
| No sound | No sound permission | Chrome Site Settings, Additional content settings, Sound: add calendar.google.com |
On a Mac, and on some Linux desktops, notifications can stack, and only the top one displays. It's also worth opening the event to check it has notifications listed, and checking the calendar has entries under Event notifications. If events themselves aren't showing up across your devices, that's a different problem, and my guide to fixing Google Calendar when it isn't syncing covers it.

Keep reminders now live in Tasks
If you used Google Keep for reminders, they've moved to Google Tasks, and new reminders are saved as tasks. You no longer get reminder notifications from Keep. To get them on your phone, install Calendar or Tasks and allow notifications for that app. They show in your calendar grid and your task list, marked From Keep in the task details, and you can manage them alongside your other Calendar tasks.
A few things changed on the way. You can't create location-based reminders any more, you can have up to 100,000 tasks, and reminders that don't repeat and are older than a year land in an Old Google Keep Reminders list. To rename a reminder, use Tasks or Calendar, because changing the Keep note's title doesn't update it.
My verdict on Google Calendar notifications
I'd set one sensible default at calendar level, then add a second reminder only on the events that matter. I'd tick the Yes or Maybe box if invites flood you, and use the Gmail header filters if you look after a team calendar. Skip fiddling with Calendar when pop-ups vanish: check your browser and system notifications first, because that's where they usually get blocked.
Frequently asked questions
Why am I not getting Google Calendar notifications?
Usually because your browser or operating system is blocking them. Allow calendar.google.com to send notifications, keep Calendar open in your browser, and check the event and calendar have notifications set.
Can I snooze Google Calendar notifications?
Yes, but only in the Chrome browser, and if an event has several notification times, Snooze shows only on the last one.
Can someone else change my Calendar notifications?
No. Your notification settings apply only to your account, though a work or school admin can change events without you getting a notification.
Where did my Google Keep reminders go?
They've moved to Google Tasks. Find them in your calendar grid and task list, and install Calendar or Tasks on your phone to get reminder notifications.
How do I stop RSVP emails from Google Calendar?
Under Settings for my calendars, click the calendar, then Other notifications, and set Event responses to None. For one event, untick Get an email when guests respond.
