Canva Magic Design: How It Works Inside Canva AI, Plus Edit with AI

Canva Magic Design is the AI that builds a design from a short description, and as of October 2026 you use it through Canva AI: type what you want in the Canva AI prompt box on the homepage, or from the Templates tab in the editor, and Canva creates a design that matches your content and style. It arranges and styles your text, photos and video using ready-made templates, but it doesn't generate video from scratch.

The catch: Magic Design lays things out, it doesn't make the video

Lots of people expect Magic Design to produce a video clip from a prompt. It won't. Canva's help page says Magic Design sets up your layout and can pull in files from other AI tools, but any video generation happens in Canva AI Video or Magic Media. Here's how Canva splits the three.

ToolWhat it makesBest for
Canva AI VideoLonger 8-second, high-quality video with sound from a text promptCinematic or polished storytelling
Magic MediaShorter 4-second silent clips, or static images, from a text promptQuick visuals and short animation-style effects
Magic DesignA layout built from ready-made templates that adapt to your contentTurning your content into a finished design

So if you want a video design, the order is: generate any clips you need first, then let Magic Design arrange them with your text, photos and music. You can customise the result with your own photos, videos and text, Canva's stock images, videos and music, and AI content from Magic Media or Canva AI Video.

Starting from the homepage or from the editor

There are two doors in, and they behave a little differently (source: Canva Help Center).

From the homepage:

  1. Select Canva AI.
  2. Enter a short description of the design you'd like.
  3. Select the plus icon if you want to add context.
  4. Press Enter or select Submit.
  5. When the design appears, select Edit design to keep working in the full editor.

From the editor:

  1. Open the Templates tab in the side panel.
  2. Enter four or more keywords describing what you want, then press Enter.
  3. Under Can't find something?, select Try Canva AI.
  4. Review or edit your prompt in the Canva AI tab and submit it.
  5. Your generated design is added as a new page in the design you're in.

That last step is the useful difference. The editor route adds a page to your existing design, so it's handy when you're building out a deck or a set of social posts and need one more page in the same file.

The plus icon is where the quality comes from

Canva's own advice is that the more context and instruction you give, the better your result. The plus icon is how you give it more than a sentence.

  • Upload: attach files from your device.
  • Add from Canva: pull in files from Your designs or Uploads.
  • Apply brand: use your brand's fonts, colours and other brand assets.
  • Connect: add content from connected apps.

If you only do one of these, make it Apply brand. A generated design in your own fonts and colours needs far less fixing than a generic one.

Generating a presentation with Canva AI

Presentations get their own flow. Canva AI for Presentations is a premium AI tool, so it counts toward your monthly AI usage, and your access depends on your plan.

  1. Select Canva AI on the homepage side navigation.
  2. Select Presentation, or describe the presentation you want. You can also select the microphone icon and speak your prompt.
  3. Use the plus icon to upload a file, add a design, apply a Brand Kit or connect an app.
  4. Submit your prompt.
  5. Adjust the proposed outline if Canva AI gives you one, then select Generate presentation.
  6. Open the design in the editor, or enter another prompt for a different result.

The outline step is the part I'd never skip. Canva says you only get presentation outlines when you generate from Canva AI on the homepage; from the Templates tab in the editor you may see fewer options. You can also use Web Research in Canva AI to bring in the latest information on your topic. Once the deck exists, my guide on presenting from Canva covers the delivery side.

Edit with AI: restyle a template you already like

If you've found a template whose look you love, Edit with AI keeps that style and rebuilds the content from your prompt. It works with presentations, social media posts and print designs, and there are three places to find it.

Work with me

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

Start fromWhere to click
A Canva templateTemplates tab in the editor, search, then Edit with AI on the template card
Your Brand TemplatesBrand tab, find the Brand Template, then Edit with AI
One of your private designsProjects on the homepage, find the design, then Edit with AI on its card

If you can't see the Edit with AI button, you're probably on an unsupported design type. If the result isn't right, add more detail to the prompt, or attach a PDF or Word file so Canva AI has more to work from.

Video formats and the Pro content trap

Magic Design for Video works with social video formats like Instagram Reels and TikTok, at 1920 x 1080 px (horizontal), 1080 x 1920 px (vertical) or 1080 x 1080 px (square). You can use videos of any size, but very small or very large ones may not come out as sharp.

Watch this on a free account: Magic Design for Video uses both free and Pro content from Canva's library. To download, you'd need to upgrade to Pro, purchase the Pro content, or remove and replace it. If you publish to YouTube, be logged in to the account linked to Canva to avoid content claims. Canva Education admins and teachers can use it; students can't.

Access, accuracy and your AI usage

  • Admins, teachers and brand designers can choose who in a team or class gets Canva AI for Presentations, and depending on the language set in Canva, some team members may not get it even when it's enabled.
  • Canva says content you create with Canva AI belongs to you, and you can use it for personal and commercial projects, but it may not be unique and some outputs may resemble existing designs.
  • Canva AI can make mistakes, so check facts, names, dates and figures before anything goes out.
  • Each use counts toward your monthly usage limit, which resets at the start of your next billing cycle.
  • Canva AI is a core feature and can't be fully turned off, though team and school admins can control access.

Magic Design also powers design generation outside Canva: the Generate design action in AI assistants uses it, which I've covered in my guide to using Canva MCP from an AI assistant. For the wider set of Canva AI tools, see how to use Canva AI.

My verdict on Canva Magic Design

I'd use Magic Design for first drafts, not final ones. Give it a clear prompt, apply your brand, and use the homepage route for presentations so you get the outline step. I'd lean on Edit with AI when I already have a template I trust, because keeping a proven layout and swapping the content is faster than fixing a fresh AI design. Just don't expect it to invent your video footage, and don't publish its facts without checking them.
