Canva's background generator is BG Generator, an AI tool that puts a brand new scene behind the subject of a photo: select the photo, choose Edit, then BG Generator under Tools, describe the background and pick from the results. As of October 2026 it also offers relighting, so your subject can match the light of the new scene, and there's a separate tool, Magic Background, for generating the background of a whole design.
The catch: describe the scene, and give the light its own words
Most disappointing results come from short prompts. Canva's own example is that a prompt like space is unlikely to work well, while open space with bright stars and a distant planet is likely to work better. The tool needs a scene, not a single noun.
Lighting is the second half people miss. BG Generator can relight your photo, but Canva's tip is to specify the lighting in the prompt for relighting, for example harsh lighting. If you leave it out, you're leaving the light to chance, and Canva admits generated results can have light direction, colour or style that doesn't match the image.
| Prompt style | Example | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Too short | space | Canva says this is unlikely to work well |
| Scene, not object | Open space with bright stars and a distant planet | Canva's own better example |
| Scene plus light | A quiet street at dusk with soft warm lighting | Gives relighting something to follow |
| Scene plus harsh light | A white studio wall in harsh lighting | Uses Canva's harsh lighting tip |
The first two rows are Canva's; the last two are my own examples built on its rules. Write the setting first, then the light, and keep the subject out of it, because the subject is already in your photo.
How to generate a background from the editor
Here are the steps (source: Canva Help Center).
- Select the photo you want to edit.
- From the editor toolbar, select Edit.
- Under Tools, select BG Generator.
- Describe the background you'd like. Select Inspire me for ideas, or Clear to start again.
- Select Generate and wait for the backgrounds to process.
- Choose from the backgrounds generated.
- Select the sun icon for Balanced relight or Maximum relight.
- Select Generate again to see different backgrounds for the same prompt.
Balanced relight versus Maximum relight is a judgement call. I'd start with Balanced, because it's the gentler of the two, and only push to Maximum when the subject still looks pasted on.
Generating a background from the Projects tab
You don't have to open a design. If the photo is already in your Canva uploads, you can do it from Projects.
- From the homepage, go to Projects, then All projects.
- Go to Images.
- Hover over the photo, then select More.
- Select Edit image and open BG Generator.
- Describe the background, select Generate and wait for the results.
- Use the sun icon for Balanced relight or Maximum relight.
The editor saves your edits automatically, so there's no separate save step.
BG Generator, Magic Background and Background Remover
Canva has three background tools with similar names, and picking the wrong one wastes time.
| Tool | What it works on | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| BG Generator | A photo | Replaces the scene behind your subject from a text prompt, with optional relighting |
| Magic Background | A fixed-size design such as a presentation, Instagram post or poster | Generates 4 background options for the design's background layer |
| Background Remover | A photo | Takes the background away rather than creating a new one |
If you only want a clean cut-out with nothing behind it, you need removal, not generation; my guide on removing a background in Canva covers that. If you need to clean up a stray object before you generate, Magic Eraser is the better first step.
The limits Canva lists for BG Generator
- You can generate backgrounds for 200 images every 24 hours.
- The generated background may be more pixelated than the original background.
- You can't generate backgrounds for images Canva has marked as unsafe, such as nudity or gore.
- Light direction, colour or style may not match the image.
- The result may be empty, unexpected or different from what you intended.
The pixelation point is worth planning around. If the photo of your subject is already low resolution, the whole image will look soft once the new background is in. I'd sort out the source photo first with the Canva image upscaler, which only works once per image, then generate the background.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
On safety, Canva runs automated reviews of prompts for terms that might generate inappropriate imagery, and you can report an image with the Report button in the app. Canva also lists the open-source licences behind the machine learning content: Apache 2.0 and CreativeML Open RAIL-M. It uses your AI allowance, so check your balance if results stop appearing.
Using Magic Background on a whole design
Magic Background is for the page, not the photo. It highlights key text or focal points and separates the background from the foreground, and it works best with readable text, distinct foreground visuals and clean, uncluttered designs.
- Create or open a fixed-size design, such as a presentation, Instagram post or poster.
- Make sure it has at least one element, like text or an image.
- Select the background layer, then select Edit from the toolbar.
- On the Edit Page panel, select Magic BG.
- Optionally, describe your background idea.
- Select Generate and choose from the 4 options. Update the description and generate again for more.
It doesn't work with responsive formats like Docs and Websites, which adjust to different screen sizes, and it isn't available in China. You can refine results with Generate again or Surprise me.
My verdict on Canva's background generator
I'd use BG Generator for product shots and portraits where the original background is boring or messy, and I'd always write the prompt as a scene with the light described. Start with Balanced relight, check the edges and the light direction, and regenerate rather than fight a bad result. For slides and social posts where the background is the page itself, Magic Background is the better fit.
