The main ChatGPT file upload limit is 512 MB per document, presentation or audio file, with text and documents also capped at 2 million tokens each. As of October 2026 you can upload up to 80 files every 3 hours, but Free users are limited to 3 file uploads per day, and OpenAI may lower these limits at busy times.
That's the short version. Under it sit separate limits for spreadsheets and images, a storage cap, project file caps that change by plan, and a few rules that explain most of the upload limit reached messages people see.
The Free plan cap is the one that bites
The rate limit is the hook here. Paid users get up to 80 files every 3 hours. Free users get 3 file uploads per day. So if you're on Free and you've attached three PDFs this morning, the fourth will fail, however small the file.
Two more things make it worse. Failed upload attempts can sometimes count toward the limit, and ChatGPT doesn't show how much of your rolling upload quota you've used or have left. Library storage, which is a separate thing, is the only usage you can see, under Settings, Storage.
ChatGPT upload limits at a glance
| Limit | As of October 2026 |
|---|---|
| Documents and presentations | 512 MB per file |
| Text and document files | 2 million tokens per file (not applied to spreadsheets) |
| CSV files and spreadsheets | About 50 MB, depending on row size |
| Images | 20 MB per image |
| Audio | 512 MB, paid plans only |
| Upload rate | 80 files every 3 hours; Free is 3 uploads per day |
| Shared upload storage | 25 GB per user, 100 GB per organisation |
Hit a storage cap and ChatGPT shows an error. The size limits apply on top of the user and organisation caps, not instead of them.
Project and GPT file limits by plan
| Where | File limit |
|---|---|
| Project on Free | Up to 5 files |
| Project on Go or Plus | Up to 25 files |
| Project on Edu, Pro, Business or Enterprise | Up to 40 files |
| Custom GPT knowledge | Up to 20 files |
If you're building a project for a long piece of work, these caps decide how much source material it can hold. My guide to ChatGPT projects covers how to organise them.
Which file types ChatGPT accepts
- Documents and text: DOCX, PDF and TXT. You can't upload a .gdoc file directly, so export it as PDF or DOCX first.
- Spreadsheets: XLSX, XLS, CSV and TSV.
- Presentations: PPTX.
- Audio: WAV, MP3/MPEG, OGG/OGA, audio-only WebM, PCM, FLAC, AAC, M4A and audio-only MP4.
Document, spreadsheet, presentation, text and image uploads work on Free and paid plans, on the web and in supported mobile apps. Audio uploads need a paid subscription or workspace, including Enterprise, and aren't available on Free. Availability can also vary by workspace settings, region, app version and model.
The audio rules
WebM and MP4 files identified as video aren't accepted as audio uploads, and the file has to contain a valid, decodable audio stream. If you're trying to get a video in, see how to upload videos to ChatGPT instead. Longer recordings may be processed in smaller sections when Data Analysis is available, but it's best effort and very long ones may time out. Transcripts can contain errors and speaker identification may be unreliable, so check important details against the recording.
When you see upload limit reached
- Check you're signed in to the right account and plan.
- If the message shows a retry time, wait until then. Retrying early can count against you, because failed attempts sometimes count.
- On the web, open Settings, Storage to check Library usage. It's separate from the upload rate.
- Check OpenAI Status for any incident affecting uploads.
- If it keeps happening, contact OpenAI Support with your account email, a screenshot, the timestamp and time zone, the platform or browser, and the request ID if there is one.
Deleting a chat doesn't delete the file
This trips a lot of people up on storage. Deleting a chat doesn't delete a file that's still saved in Library. To remove it, open Library, select the file and choose Delete or the trash icon. If your Library has Recently deleted, you can restore it from there until it's gone for good, or choose Delete forever to remove it sooner. Files in a custom GPT's knowledge are removed in the GPT builder.
Content from a file can also stay in the conversation that used it, so deleting the file and deleting the chat are separate jobs. How uploads are used to improve models depends on your service and data settings, and OpenAI says it doesn't use content from business offerings such as the API and ChatGPT Enterprise to improve its models.
PDFs are a special case: ChatGPT can read text and images in them, including charts, when you attach the PDF directly to a chat. Files saved as project or GPT knowledge may not include embedded images. My guide on how to upload a PDF to ChatGPT goes through that.

How I'd work within the limits
I'd combine related documents into one file before uploading if you're on Free, because the cap is 3 uploads a day, not 3 large ones. I'd export Google Docs to PDF or DOCX rather than fight the .gdoc block. On a paid plan, the 80 files every 3 hours is plenty for most work, so if you hit it, wait for the retry time instead of hammering the upload button. And I'd clean out Library now and then, because deleting old chats won't free that space.
