Wix SEO is controlled from the SEO & GEO area of your site's dashboard and from each page's SEO settings, where you set title tags, meta descriptions, indexing and redirects. Wix adds default meta tags to every page, but the default meta description is blank until you write one, so that's the first gap to fill.
The defaults are better than most people assume. Every main page gets a title of your page name followed by your site name, a canonical tag, Open Graph tags for social sharing and an index tag. The trouble is in the details: descriptions start empty, some page types are set to noindex, and redirects behave differently on the blog.
What Wix sets by default
| Page type | Default title tag | Indexed by default? |
|---|---|---|
| Main pages | {{Page Name | Site Name}} | Yes |
| Store product pages | {{Product Name | Site Name}} | Yes |
| Store category pages | {{Category Name | Site Name}} | Yes |
| Blog posts | {{Post Name | Site Name}} | Yes |
| Blog tag pages | Tag name followed by site name | No |
| Blog archive pages | Archived month and year | No |
| Member profile pages | Member name followed by site name | No, noindex by default |
| Online Programs | {{Online Program Name | Site Name}} | Yes, unless it's a secret program |
For main pages, products, categories, blog posts and member profiles, the meta description is blank until you enter one. If you never fill it in, search engines pick their own text from the page. Even when you do, Google sometimes shows a different description if it decides other text on the page matches the search better.
Writing title tags and meta descriptions
Wix's own guidance is simple and worth following. Keep title tags under 60 characters, because search engines often trim longer ones. Make every title unique. Use the pipe sign to separate parts. For a local business Wix suggests Keyword | Location | Brand Name, and Keyword | Brand Name for everyone else. Meta descriptions should be 50 to 160 characters, include your target keywords and end with a call to action.
Wix also notes that AI bots rely on an accurate meta description when summarising your page, so describe the page clearly rather than stuffing it with keywords. To add them, as of October 2026:
- Click Pages & Menu on the left side of the editor.
- Click the More Actions icon next to the page and open its SEO panel.
- Enter your title under Title tag (title in search results).
- Enter your description under Meta description (description in search results).
- Click Publish. Search engines pick up the change the next time they crawl the site.
The indexing switch
There's one site-wide toggle that decides whether search engines can index your site at all. Go to SEO & GEO in your dashboard, scroll to Tools and settings and make sure Let search engines index your site is on. Turn it off only if you're not ready to go public. You can also hide individual pages from search in the editor. To check whether you're indexed, search site: followed by your domain with no spaces. No results means Google hasn't indexed it yet.
The SEO Setup Checklist and its limits
The Wix SEO Setup Checklist builds a personalised plan from 3 answers: your business name, whether you serve customers from a physical address or online, and 3 keywords. It walks you through connecting to Google, homepage titles, mobile, contact details and internal links. As of October 2026 it has real limits: you need a Premium plan and a connected domain to connect Google Search Console, only site owners and admin collaborators can use it, and it doesn't analyse your blog or apps like Wix Stores.
SEO variables: one rule for a whole section
Variables let you write one SEO rule that fills in differently on every page. Set product pages to Product Name, Site Name and each product gets its own title automatically. There are variables for business location, products, store categories, blog posts, Bookings services, events, dynamic items and more. On dynamic item pages, don't delete the collection field a variable references, or the variable stops working. To restore a field to the default, delete its content and click Save, or use the Reset to Wix Default icon for every field at once.
301 redirects on Wix
You create 301 redirects in the URL Redirect Manager in your SEO & GEO dashboard. When you change a page's URL slug, Wix creates the 301 for you automatically. The exception is Wix Blog: changing a blog page's slug doesn't create a redirect, so you have to add it by hand.
| 301 redirect rule | As of October 2026 |
|---|---|
| Maximum redirects per site | 5,000 |
| Free Wix URLs | Not supported. Redirects only work with custom domains |
| Redirect from the homepage | Not possible in the Redirect Manager. Redirect domain to domain instead |
| Source URLs containing # | Not supported |
| Deleted redirects | Can't be recovered |
| Groups of pages | Use a group redirect for pages sharing a path, such as product pages or blog posts |
- Go to SEO & GEO in your dashboard and click URL Redirect Manager.
- Enter the old URL path under Old URL, for example /about-us.
- For a page on your site, start typing its slug and pick it from the drop-down. For an external page, enter the full URL.
- Click Save, or Save & Add Another.
- Wait a few minutes, then use the View Redirect icon to check it opens the right page.
If you move a site to Wix and can't recreate the old URLs exactly, Wix recommends 301s for every old page so you keep your ranking data. Comparing platforms first? Here are the builders compared on SEO.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
Two structured data details
Wix adds structured data to products, events, Bookings services and blog posts for you, and creates Local Business markup on your homepage once you add a business name and location. Wix notes that for rich results, Google requires the Publisher, which is your business or site name, and Logo fields to be completed. Skip the logo and, if you're connected to Search Console, you may get error emails about missing data.
My verdict on Wix SEO
I'd spend your first hour writing a unique title and meta description for every important page, because the blank default description is the biggest gap Wix leaves. Then check the indexing toggle, and add a 301 every time you rename a blog post. Skip fiddling with structured data unless you know what you're doing: Wix Customer Care can't help with markup changes. If you're still getting the basics of the platform down, start with using Wix.
Ranking on Google is half the job now. The other half is being the business AI answers recommend. I run AI training and workshops for teams, and help businesses with AI enablement, workflow automation and GEO, which is about getting your business seen and cited in AI answers. Most of that work is with SaaS marketing teams and small businesses. Here's how we can work together.
Frequently asked questions
Is Wix good for SEO?
Wix guarantees that all of your site content can be crawled and indexed by search engines whether your site is upgraded or not, and adds default SEO and social tags to every page.
Why is my Wix meta description blank?
The default meta description is blank until you enter one. Add it in each page's SEO panel, or use variables to set a rule for a whole section.
How many redirects does a Wix site allow?
As of October 2026 you can create a maximum of 5,000 redirects per Wix site.
Does Wix redirect blog posts automatically?
No. Wix creates automatic 301s for most pages when you change the slug, but not for Wix Blog pages. Create those manually in the URL Redirect Manager.
How do I stop Google indexing my Wix site?
Go to SEO & GEO in your dashboard, scroll to Tools and settings and turn off the Let search engines index your site toggle.
