Compensation management software helps HR teams benchmark pay against the market, run salary review cycles, build pay bands and check pay equity in one place instead of spreadsheets. With pay transparency laws spreading, many tools now lead with fair, defensible pay decisions. Ten options follow, alphabetically and in no particular order.
Compensation is the people decision everyone feels and few people trust. Run it through spreadsheets and email, and every salary review ends with managers guessing, HR chasing approvals and nobody able to explain why two people in the same role earn different amounts.
This list covers pay itself. For reviews and goals, see my performance management software guide. Every description below comes from each vendor's own website, read as of Oct 2026.
Compensation tools side by side
I checked the free plan column on each vendor's own website, as of Oct 2026. Yes means the page names a free plan, a free version or an open source edition. Trial only means it names a time-limited free trial. Not stated means the page I read named neither, so check the vendor's own site before you sign up.

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
Pay transparency rules now shape the pitch
Reading the vendor pages, one theme kept coming up. Pave calls itself AI-Native Compensation Management Software, but Figures sells Pay Transparency and Compensation Management, and Trusaic's page opens with a notice that the EU Pay Transparency has arrived. Salary range disclosure laws and pay gap reporting are changing what these tools lead with.
There's a catch inside that. Pay equity audit tools and merit-cycle tools aren't the same thing. One proves your pay is fair across groups, the other runs the annual review where managers propose raises. Some suites do both, so check which one a vendor is built around.
Benchmarking, merit cycles and pay equity
- Benchmarking and planning. Market salary data by role and location, pay bands and planning tools, so offers and raises are anchored to the market, not to whoever negotiated hardest.
- Merit cycles and incentives. Workflows for the review itself: managers propose increases within guidelines, HR approves, and employees get a clear statement.
- Pay equity. Analysis of pay gaps across gender and other groups, with fixes and the reporting that pay transparency laws ask for.
What HR should check before the next salary review
- Data source. Where do the market benchmarks come from, and how fresh are they for your roles and locations?
- Integrations. It needs a clean feed from your HRIS and payroll, or you'll be fixing spreadsheets again.
- Manager experience. Managers do most of the work in a cycle, so test the screens they'll use, not just the admin view.
- Jurisdictions. If you employ people in several countries, check which pay transparency laws the tool tracks.
- Statements. Can employees see a clear total rewards statement at the end?
Pay data is only one slice of your people data. My HR analytics software guide covers the wider picture, and my talent management software list covers hiring through development.

My plain advice on compensation management software
Start with the problem that hurts most. If managers can't explain pay decisions, you need benchmarks and bands first. If a pay transparency deadline is coming, start with an equity audit and work back from there. Buying a full suite before you know which problem you have just moves the spreadsheet chaos somewhere shinier.
And involve managers early. They're the ones who'll use it every review cycle, and a tool they find confusing won't fix anything.

Frequently asked questions
What is compensation management software?
It's software HR teams use to benchmark salaries, build pay bands, run salary review cycles and check pay equity, replacing spreadsheets and email approvals.
What's the difference between compensation management and payroll?
Payroll pays people what they're owed each period. Compensation management decides what each salary should be in the first place, through benchmarks, bands and review cycles.
What is pay equity software?
It analyses pay across groups such as gender to find unexplained gaps, helps you fix them and produces the reports pay transparency laws ask for.
Do small companies need compensation management software?
Not always. With a small team a well-kept spreadsheet can work. Once you run formal review cycles across several managers or countries, software saves time and makes decisions easier to defend.
How does pay transparency affect compensation software?
Laws requiring salary ranges in job ads and pay gap reports mean pay decisions need to be consistent and explainable, so many tools now build in salary bands, equity checks and law trackers.
