What Is a Unique Selling Proposition (USP)? How to Write One, and Why Discounts Don't Count

A unique selling proposition (USP) is the key benefit or feature that sets your business or product apart from competitors. Shopify describes it as a clear, focused statement that answers a potential customer's first question: what makes you different?

It sounds simple, and most businesses think they've got one. Then you ask them to name it and hear 'great service' or 'quality products'. Neither is a USP, and Shopify explains why.

Why discounts, free shipping and 24/7 support aren't USPs

Shopify's rule is that marketing offers like discounts, free shipping or 24/7 support aren't differentiators, because competitors can easily copy them. The same goes for 'we sell high-quality products', which Shopify calls too generic. A USP has to be something a rival can't match by changing a setting or running a sale.

That's a higher bar than it looks. Shopify's examples show where real differences tend to come from: the ingredients, the people behind the product, or a choice nobody else gave the customer.

  • Pip's Snacks makes popcorn from heirloom corn, and explains why that matters on its homepage.
  • Kloo sells coffee concentrate built on a Q Grader co-founder's expertise and her mother's brewing process.
  • ThirdLove offers a third option, so customers don't have to choose between comfort and sexiness, and backs it with a fit quiz and half sizes.

None of those is a discount. A competitor couldn't copy any of them this week.

USP vs value proposition: what's the difference?

The two get mixed up constantly. Shopify separates them like this: a USP is about what sets you apart from competitors, while a unique value proposition (UVP) is a more specific statement about how the product benefits the customer. One looks sideways at the competition; the other looks straight at the buyer.

You need both. The USP gives the value proposition something to stand on, and the value proposition turns it into a reason to buy. I've written a separate explainer on value propositions, with three formulas for writing one.

How to write a USP in five steps

Shopify's version has three steps: list what makes your brand and products unique, narrow it down to your main differentiator, then write your statement and keep refining it. I split it into five, because the crossing-out stage is where most of the work happens:

  1. List everything that makes you different, as specifically as you can.
  2. Cross out anything a competitor could copy this week: discounts, free shipping, 24/7 support.
  3. Pick the one differentiator customers would repeat in their own words.
  4. Fill in Shopify's template, below.
  5. Use it in your tagline, your homepage headline and your product pages.

Shopify's template reads: (your brand) offers (product or service) for (target market) to (value proposition). Unlike (the alternative), we (key differentiator). If you can't fill that last slot with something a rival couldn't copy, go back to step two. And if you're struggling to separate yourself at all, my guide to building a business differentiation strategy goes deeper.

Once you have it, use it everywhere

A USP that lives in a strategy document does nothing. Shopify's point is that a strong one anchors your marketing strategy, messaging, visual branding and copywriting. Its example is Beekman 1802, whose USP, 'a kind ecosystem for healthy skin', shows up in its tagline, its product choices, what it calls its customers ('neighbors'), its recycling programme and its mascot. Its co-founder told Shopify that pinning down the USP with a branding agency was a 'eureka moment'.

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

You can start smaller than that: your homepage headline, your product page intros and the first line of your sales calls. If they all say the same thing, you've got a USP. If they don't, you've got a list. My older post on the selling points every product should have is a handy checklist for those product pages.

Where I come in

Shopify's own advice, if your differentiators aren't clear, is to bring in a branding agency or consultant with a fresh perspective. That's because you can't see your business the way a stranger does. I've been in marketing for 23 years, and finding the one thing a business does that nobody else can claim is a big part of what I do with clients, along with turning it into copy that gets used. See how I work on my work with me page.

My verdict

I'll be blunt: 'quality' and 'service' aren't USPs. Every competitor says them, and buyers stopped hearing them years ago. Your USP is usually something you take for granted because you've done it for so long: the material, the method, the person behind it, the customer you won't compromise for. Find that, say it in one sentence, and use the same sentence everywhere until you're sick of it. Your customers won't be.
