Demand planning software forecasts how much of each product customers will buy, by item, location and week, so you can order and make the right amount. It's usually one module inside a supply chain planning suite now, and the right choice depends mostly on your size and how many products you sell. Ten options follow in no particular order.
Get demand wrong and you lose twice: once in cash tied up in stock nobody wants, and again in sales lost to stockouts. A good demand planning tool won't make the future certain, but it'll make your forecasts consistent, explainable and quicker to fix.
The ten tools below are listed alphabetically and in no particular order, and every description comes from each vendor's own website, read as of Oct 2026. If you're a small business still on spreadsheets, start with my guide to inventory management software, because demand planning sits on top of clean stock data.
Demand planning tools at a glance
I checked the free plan column on each vendor's own website, as of Oct 2026. Yes means the page names a free plan, a free version or an open source edition. Trial only means it names a time-limited free trial. Not stated means the page I read named neither, so check the vendor's own site before you sign up.

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
Demand planning is now a module, not a product
Here's what the vendor pages show. ToolsGroup's home page leads with always-on intelligence for supply chain planning, Slimstock calls itself AI-powered supply chain planning, and Netstock sells supply and demand planning software. Hardly anyone sells demand planning on its own any more.
That matters because you're often buying a suite. Ask which modules you need on day one, and whether demand planning works without inventory optimization or S&OP switched on.
Shopify brand, mid-sized distributor or global enterprise?
- E-commerce brands. Tools built for Shopify and multichannel sellers forecast by SKU and channel and turn the result into purchase orders. They're quick to set up and connect to your store directly.
- Mid-sized distributors and manufacturers. These tools add forecasting, inventory optimization and S&OP on top of your ERP data, without a long enterprise project.
- Enterprises. Full planning suites link demand to supply, production, finance and integrated business planning across many sites and countries. Expect a bigger rollout.
How to judge a demand forecast before you trust it
- Back-test it. Ask the vendor to forecast last season from older data and compare it with what you sold.
- Check accuracy by item, not on average. A good total can hide big misses on your best sellers.
- Look for promotions and seasonality. The tool should separate a one-off spike from real demand.
- Check how it handles new products with no sales history.
- Make sure planners can override it and see why the forecast changed.

My plain advice on choosing demand planning software
Match the tool to your size before you compare features. A Shopify brand with a few hundred SKUs doesn't need an enterprise suite, and a manufacturer with dozens of sites won't get far with a store app. Shortlist three, give each the same two years of sales history, and judge them on back-tested accuracy for your top products, not on the demo.
And keep the stock side tidy, because every forecast feeds a purchase order in the end. Clean item data, accurate lead times and sensible safety stock settings will do more for you than any algorithm.

Frequently asked questions
What is demand planning software?
It forecasts future customer demand by product, location and period, using sales history, seasonality and promotions, so teams can plan stock, production and purchasing.
What's the difference between demand planning and inventory management?
Inventory management tracks the stock you've got. Demand planning predicts what you'll need, which then drives how much you reorder and when.
Do small businesses need demand planning software?
Once you sell more than a few dozen products or carry stock with long lead times, yes. E-commerce brands can start with a Shopify-focused planner, because spreadsheets break first on seasonality.
What is demand sensing?
It uses very recent signals, such as daily sales or orders, to adjust short-term forecasts faster than a monthly planning cycle can. Several suites here offer it next to demand planning.
How accurate is demand planning software?
It depends on your data and products. Ask each vendor to back-test on your own history and report accuracy by item, because headline averages hide the misses that matter.
