Notion Sites: How to Publish a Notion Page to the Web

Notion Sites turns a Notion page into a live website: open the page, select Share, open the Publish tab and select Publish. Anyone can publish pages, claim one notion.site domain and turn on search engine indexing, and as of October 2026 paid plans add SEO settings, themes, Google Analytics and an add-on for using your own custom domain.

Here's the catch most people miss. When you publish a page, or set it to Anyone on the web with link, the page's metadata includes the names, profile photos and email addresses of every Notion user who's contributed to it. And publishing a page publishes all of its subpages too, along with their subpages, unless you restrict them first.

If you're still deciding whether to upgrade, my breakdown of Notion plans shows where each one stops.

How to publish a Notion page

  1. Open the page you want to publish and select Share at the top.
  2. Open the Publish tab.
  3. Select Publish.
  4. Select View site to see it live.

From then on, any change you make to the page shows on the site automatically. That's handy, but it also means unfinished edits show up on the live site too.

Publishing a site is a separate thing from the Anyone on the web with link setting in the Share menu. If you're new to how pages and subpages fit together, my Notion beginner guide is a good place to start.

Rules for your page slug

On a paid plan you can change the slug, the part after your domain, such as my-slug in notion.site/my-slug. Open Share, then Publish, click the current slug, type the new one and save.

  • Letters, numbers and hyphens only, no other special characters.
  • Up to 60 characters.
  • Home pages can't have a slug.
  • Slugs don't pass down to subpages, so each one is set by hand.
  • You can't reuse a slug on two pages in one workspace, even on different domains.
  • Once you permanently delete a published page, its slug can't be used again, so change the slug before deleting if you might want it back.

Getting a Notion site into search results

In the Publish menu, select Search engine indexing and toggle on Discoverable on the web. Paid plans can also edit the link title and description search engines show. Notion's help says sites can take up to four weeks to be indexed and appear in results, so don't panic if a new site doesn't show up in the first few days.

The same menu has a few other switches. Duplicate as template lets visitors copy your site into their own workspace as a Notion page. Site customization is where the paid design options live, and All published sites shows everything you've got live in one list.

Embedding a published page on another website

  1. On a published page, click Embed this page.
  2. Toggle on Show page title if you want it.
  3. Click Copy this code.
  4. Paste the code into your website's HTML. In most website builders, that means a code block.

You can embed forms, charts, databases and more this way, which is useful if your main site isn't on Notion but you want to show a live list or form on it.

What visitors can see and do

  • Anyone on the web can view the site.
  • If the site contains a database, visitors can switch between views and open pages inside it.
  • Depending on your settings, they can also search or duplicate the site.
  • Pages are public, with no password option. To share privately, invite the person from the Share menu instead.

You can link to a section of a page by adding a table of contents, which creates anchor links to its headings.

Taking a Notion site down

  1. Open the page and select Share at the top.
  2. Open the Publish tab and select Unpublish.
  3. Check the general access setting too. If it still says Anyone on the web with link, open that dropdown and select Remove.

That third step is the one people forget. An unpublished site can still be open to anyone holding the link if general access was left on. On the Enterprise Plan, workspace owners can stop members publishing sites at all from Settings, then Security, with Disable publishing sites, forms, and public links. Turning that on takes down any sites already live.

ProblemWhat's going on
Old links stopped workingYou changed your workspace domain. Links using the previous domain no longer work, so copy the new one from Share, then Publish
Visitors see a Continue to external site messageYou shared the workspace version of the page. Share the published link, which begins with your workspace domain name

My verdict on Notion Sites

For a simple resource page, a handbook or a public list, it's hard to beat. Notion's own showcase includes an employee handbook, a recipe box, a design portfolio and a reading list, and that's the sweet spot. It's live in four clicks and it updates itself. Before you hit Publish, check every subpage and remember that contributors' names and emails sit in the page metadata. If you need a full website with more control, compare it with these Google Sites alternatives first.
