Wix AI Website Builder: How It Works, What Aria Does and When You Need to Upgrade

The Wix AI website builder creates a business-ready website from a description you type in, then lets you refine it by hand or with Aria, Wix's built-in AI agent. You can start free with no credit card, as of October 2026, but connecting your own domain or taking payments needs a Wix Premium plan.

Here's the catch. The free build is a preview of your site, not a live shop. Wix says connecting a custom domain, collecting payments online or using extra features all need a Premium plan, so the moment you want customers to find you at your own address and pay you, you're on a paid plan. That isn't a reason to skip it. It's a reason to treat the free build as a test drive and judge the result before you commit.

How the Wix AI builder works in four steps

Wix lays out the process in four stages on its AI website builder page, as of October 2026:

StepWhat happens
1. DescribeYou tell the builder what you need, including your business goals and the style you're after.
2. GenerateThe AI creates a site with built-in business tools already in place.
3. EditYou fine tune it with Aria, Wix's AI agent, and drag and drop editing.
4. LaunchYou go live with a custom domain, SEO tools and marketing tools.

Wix says it typically takes just a few minutes to generate a site. After that, you can spend as long as you like refining it, either by prompting Aria or by dragging things around yourself.

What Aria is and what it does

Aria is the AI agent built into the Wix editor. Rather than hunting through menus, you describe a change and Aria makes it. Wix calls the approach hybrid editing: you can use AI for the big moves or adjust any detail down to the last pixel by hand, and switch between the two whenever you like.

The AI side goes further than tweaking colours. Wix says you can generate whole pages, sections and visuals, and you can describe a component or a custom experience and have it built for you. Wix calls that last part vibe coding. In plain terms, you explain the feature in words and the builder writes it, so you don't need a developer for small custom pieces.

That mix matters for a small business. AI gets you a first draft fast, but no generator knows your customers the way you do. Being able to take over and move one button, rewrite one headline or swap one photo is what stops the site looking like everyone else's.

What kinds of sites it can build

Wix lists four broad types of site the generator makes, each with tools suited to it:

Site typeTools Wix says come built in
Ecommerce and dropshipping storesProduct galleries, payments and inventory
Service businessesScheduling, booking and lead forms
Blogs and content platformsBuilt-in SEO and social sharing
Events and portfoliosNamed by Wix as a site type the generator makes

You can also add an online store, scheduling software or a blog later, so a site that starts as a simple portfolio can grow into a booking or shop site without starting again.

Free to build, Premium to go live

Wix says you can start for free and you don't need a credit card. That lets you see what the AI makes of your business before you spend anything. What you can't do on the free build is connect a custom domain, collect payments online or use the extra features Wix keeps for paid plans. For those you need a Premium plan.

There's one sweetener: Wix offers a free domain for a year with any annual website plan, as of October 2026. If you'd rather know what the free account covers before you start, my guide to whether Wix is free walks through it.

The business tools that come with it

A website on its own won't bring customers in, and Wix leans on that point. Alongside the builder it lists:

Work with me

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

  • Marketing: SEO, paid ads, social media and email campaigns, plus an AI marketing agent.
  • Business tools: inventory, contacts and automations, so orders and enquiries sit in the same place as your site.
  • Add-ons: an online store, scheduling software or a blog, which you can bolt on as you grow.

On the technical side, Wix says sites generated this way are designed to be mobile-friendly and sit on SEO-friendly infrastructure with built-in SEO tools. Wix also claims 99.99% uptime with multi-cloud hosting, integrated encryption, advanced threat prevention, 24/7 monitoring and integrated accessibility tools. Those are Wix's own figures and claims, but they cover the dull essentials a small business owner shouldn't have to think about.

Wix's own checklist for picking an AI builder

Wix suggests judging any AI website builder on four things, and they're a fair test whichever tool you end up with:

  1. Design quality. Does the generated site look like a business you'd buy from?
  2. Ease of use. Can you change things yourself without getting stuck?
  3. Scalability. Can the site grow into a shop or a booking system later?
  4. Added value features. Does it come with the marketing and business tools you'd otherwise pay for separately?

If you want to compare Wix against other builders on those points, my roundup of Wix alternatives is a good next read.

My verdict

The Wix AI website builder is a fast way to get a first draft of a small business site, and because it's free to start with no card, there's nothing to lose by trying it. Describe your business in detail in step one, because the better the brief, the better the draft. Then judge it after the free build, not before. If the draft is close, Aria and drag and drop will get you the rest of the way, and you'll only need a Premium plan when you're ready to put it on your own domain or start taking payments.
