The Microsoft Copilot app is the new name for the Microsoft 365 Copilot app, which was itself the renamed Microsoft 365 app. It keeps the same job with a simpler name and icon, and its web addresses are consolidating into copilot.cloud.microsoft. What you can do in it depends on whether you sign in with a work account or a personal one.
If you've opened your laptop to find a different icon, or a bookmark has started landing somewhere new, this is why. Here's how the name changed, what's inside the app now, and the account rules that decide who gets Copilot Chat.
How the app's name changed
- It started as the Microsoft 365 app, reached through office.com and microsoft365.com.
- On January 15, 2025, Microsoft began rolling out the Microsoft 365 Copilot name and icon. The web address moved to m365.cloud.microsoft, and office.com and microsoft365.com started redirecting there.
- Now the Microsoft 365 Copilot app has been renamed the Microsoft Copilot app, with a simpler name and icon, and its web app addresses are consolidating into copilot.cloud.microsoft.
So if a colleague's old bookmark to office.com lands somewhere unfamiliar, nothing's broken. It's the third stop on the same journey.
What's inside the Microsoft Copilot app
- Chat
- Cowork
- Agents
- Pages
- Notebooks
- Search
- Create
Chat is where most people start. Microsoft's help pages put the voice and vision features here, along with summarising files, video recaps and your chat history.
Cowork is the newer section. Microsoft's help covers starting a conversation, taking control of actions before they run, managing tasks and scheduling prompts, and building interactive apps. The bit I'd point any team to first is taking control of actions before they run, because it means you see what Copilot's about to do and can step in.
Pages is for drafting content, building lightweight apps and sharing pages, and you can convert a page to Word. Microsoft has a help page comparing Pages, Loop and Notebooks, which tells you how much overlap there is. My guide to Copilot Pages goes into it in more detail.
Work account vs personal account
| Account | What Copilot Chat access needs |
|---|---|
| Work or school | A Microsoft 365 licence (no additional cost) or a Microsoft Copilot licence |
| Personal | Microsoft 365 Personal, Family, Premium or Pro, primary account holder only |
| Region without Copilot | Copilot tab removed; the app keeps its name and icon |
Here's the catch: your sign-in decides what you get. The same app gives you the managed, protected experience with a work account and the consumer version with a personal one. And on personal accounts, Copilot Chat is limited to the primary account holder. If you're the second person on a Family plan, you won't get it through that plan.
For businesses, that makes sign-in hygiene matter. Someone using the app on a personal account at work is outside the protected work experience, even though the app looks the same.
If the Copilot tab is missing
In regions where Copilot isn't available, the app removes the Copilot tab from the Home screen on web, desktop and mobile, but keeps the Copilot name and icon. So the app can be called Copilot and still not have Copilot in it. If you're somewhere Copilot is offered and the tab's still missing, check which account you've signed in with and whether it has an eligible licence.
Getting your team ready for the change
- Update shared bookmarks and onboarding guides to copilot.cloud.microsoft.
- Tell staff the app has a new name and icon, so nobody thinks they've installed the wrong thing.
- Check who has a Microsoft 365 licence and who has a Microsoft Copilot licence, since both give access to Copilot Chat on work accounts.
- Make sure people sign in with their work account, not a personal one.
- Show the team where Chat, Cowork and Pages live, and how to take control of actions before Cowork runs them.
If you're after Copilot on Windows rather than the work app, my guide on how to use Copilot covers the consumer side.
What the rename means for you
The rename itself is a new name, a new icon and new web addresses. The part that matters is the account you sign in with, because that decides whether you get the protected work experience or the consumer one. Sort out sign-ins and bookmarks, then spend your time on Cowork and Pages, the newer sections most people haven't explored yet.
