A WordPress gallery plugin changes how your images are laid out and opened: grids, masonry, filterable portfolios, albums, sliders, lightboxes and video galleries. It doesn't change how Google reads the images, which still comes down to your filenames, alt text and page content. Ten free plugins follow, in no particular order, with their directory numbers.
A gallery plugin is for when you want more than a plain set of images: albums people click into, a portfolio visitors can filter by category, a masonry wall, video next to photos, or a lightbox that opens each image full size.
These ten are in alphabetical order, with each description taken from the plugin's own WordPress.org directory page. If you're still deciding how the rest of the site is built, my guide for WordPress design and development beginners covers that ground first.
Gallery plugins compared
All ten are free plugins in the WordPress.org plugin directory, as of Oct 2026, so the free plan column reads Yes. Some makers sell extra features on their own sites, so check the plugin's page for what the free version includes.

Pick by layout first
- Grid and masonry: rows of thumbnails, or a Pinterest-style masonry wall of mixed heights. Most of the list does this.
- Filterable portfolios: category buttons above the gallery, so a visitor can show one type of work at a time.
- Albums: galleries inside galleries, for photographers and event sites with lots of sets.
- Video galleries: video alongside photos in the same layout.
- Sliders and lightboxes: one image at a time, or a full-size view that opens over the page.
Choose the layout your visitors need, then shortlist the plugins that name it in their description. A filterable portfolio and a wedding album are different jobs, even when both plugins call themselves gallery plugins.
Google reads files, not layouts
Google Search Central's image SEO best practices say Google extracts information about an image from the page content, and recommend short, descriptive filenames. Their example is my-new-black-kitten.jpg rather than IMG00023.JPG.
No gallery plugin can fix a file called IMG00023.JPG once it's in your media library. So rename your photos before they go in, and write alt text that says what's in each one. That work decides what the images can be found for. The plugin only decides how they look.

Dozens of thumbnails on one page
A gallery page can carry dozens of images, and most of them sit below what a visitor sees first. web.dev's article on browser-level image lazy loading explains that images below the viewport are loaded with a lower priority, and that the loading attribute, set to lazy, can defer offscreen images.
So check that the plugin lazy loads the thumbnails below the fold. Then open the finished gallery page on your phone and scroll through it before you share it with anyone.

Reading the directory numbers
NextGEN Gallery has the most installs here, 300,000+, as of Oct 2026, and the most ratings, 4,342, but its 86/100 is the joint lowest score on the list. FooGallery has 100,000+ installs and 96/100 from 994 ratings.
Install counts show how many sites run a plugin, and ratings show how its users feel about it. Read both, then try the layout you need on a test page before you move a whole portfolio across.

My plain advice on gallery plugins
Choose the layout first and the plugin second. Name your image files and write alt text before you upload, check that the plugin lazy loads below the fold, and stick to one gallery plugin so you're not maintaining two sets of galleries.
For the alt text itself, my guide to avoiding common alt text blunders walks you through it.

Frequently asked questions
What does a WordPress gallery plugin do?
It controls how your images are displayed: grids, masonry, albums, filterable portfolios, sliders, lightboxes and video galleries.
Does a gallery plugin help my images rank in Google?
Not on its own. Google's image guidance points to the page content and short, descriptive filenames, which you sort out before you upload.
Should a gallery lazy load its images?
For large galleries, yes. web.dev explains that images below the viewport load with a lower priority, and offscreen images can be deferred with the loading attribute.
What's a filterable portfolio gallery?
It's a gallery with category buttons above it, so visitors can show only one kind of work at a time.
Are WordPress gallery plugins free?
All ten here are free plugins in the WordPress.org plugin directory, as of Oct 2026. Some makers sell extra features on their own sites, so check each plugin's page.
