The best Chrome extensions for YouTube fall into two groups. Viewer tools change how you watch, with speed control, sponsor skipping and better titles. Creator tools help you grow a channel with search optimisation and analytics. Ten picks follow in no particular order, most of them small or open source, so choose from the half that fits you.
YouTube is the same site for everyone, but the people watching it and the people making videos for it want very different things. Most lists mix the two up, which is how you end up installing an SEO toolbar when all you wanted was to skip the sponsor read.
The ten tools below are listed alphabetically and in no particular order. I read each one's own website or project page this week and I've only described what those pages say. If you're building a channel, my guide to growing a YouTube channel from scratch pairs well with the creator tools here.
YouTube extensions side by side
I checked the free plan column on each tool's own website or project page, as of Oct 2026. Yes means the page names a free account or says the tool is open source. Not stated means the page I read didn't say, so check the tool's own site or store listing before you sign up.

Ten YouTube tools, for watching and for growing
DeArrow
Best for: Viewers tired of clickbait, since this open source extension crowdsources better titles and thumbnails, and it comes from the same creator as another extension on this list.
Enhancer for YouTube
Best for: Regular viewers who want extra player controls on YouTube; its own site says little up front, so check the store listing for the current features.
ImprovedTube
Best for: Tinkerers who like to set things up once, with an open source YouTube extension whose project page promises smart, set-and-forget features.
Morningfame
Best for: Smaller creators who want YouTube growth simplified, with smarter analytics and an SEO tool built to help videos rank in search.
Return YouTube Dislike
Best for: Viewers who use dislikes to judge a tutorial before watching it, since this open source extension brings back the YouTube dislike count.
Social Blade
Best for: Creators and marketers sizing up a channel, with public statistics for YouTube, Instagram, Twitch and TikTok and a free account option.
SponsorBlock
Best for: Anyone who watches long videos, as this open source, crowdsourced extension skips over the sponsor segments other viewers have marked.
TubeBuddy
Best for: Channel owners serious about search, with a YouTube SEO and growth tool from one of the best-known names on this list.
Video Speed Controller
Best for: People who learn from tutorials and talks, since this HTML5 video speed controller for Chrome, published on GitHub, gives you finer control over playback.
vidIQ
Best for: Creators chasing more subscribers and views, with a well-known set of YouTube tools that its site says includes keyword research and an AI coach.
Tools that keep you focused beyond video are in productivity extensions.
Viewer tools and creator tools aren't the same thing
Speed control, sponsor skipping and dislike counts change how you watch. SEO and analytics tools change how you publish. If you're not running a channel, skip the creator half entirely. Two of the creator picks present themselves on their own sites as analytics and statistics services, so check whether you want the website or a browser add-on before you sign up.

Why a YouTube extension can stop working overnight
Chrome for Developers' documentation on permission warnings says that when an extension update adds a permission that triggers a warning, Chrome disables the extension until you accept the new permission.
So if your sponsor skipper or SEO toolbar suddenly vanishes from the page, check your extensions page before you reinstall anything. Then read the new permission. A tool you added to skip sponsor reads shouldn't suddenly need much more access than that, and an update is your moment to decide whether it still deserves a place.
Keep a short note of which extensions you installed and why. When something stops working you'll know what it was meant to do, and when you stop using one it's easy to remove. Fewer extensions also means fewer permission prompts to keep an eye on.

My plain advice on choosing YouTube extensions
If you're a viewer, two or three small tools are plenty: one for speed, one for sponsors, maybe one for titles. If you're a creator, pick one SEO toolkit and learn it well, rather than running two that cover the same ground on every page you open.
And before you obsess over tags, read my piece on whether your channel description matters for YouTube SEO.

Frequently asked questions
What are the best Chrome extensions for YouTube?
For viewers, the picker above covers the most common annoyances: sponsor reads, clickbait titles and slow tutorials. For creators, two of the best-known names are SEO and growth toolkits.
Is the sponsor skipper free?
The extension that skips sponsor segments describes itself as open source and crowdsourced. The same creator also makes another extension on this list, for better titles and thumbnails.
Can I still see dislikes on YouTube?
Yes, with an extension. One open source tool on this list returns the YouTube dislike count.
Do I need a YouTube SEO toolkit?
Only if you run a channel and want help with search and growth. Pick one rather than both, since they cover similar ground.
Why did my YouTube extension stop working?
Chrome disables an extension when an update adds a permission with a warning, until you accept it. Check your extensions page first.
