An AI chess coach reviews the games you play, explains why a move was good or bad in plain language and builds training from your own mistakes. Some chat with you about a position, while others play like a human at your level. Nine tools follow in no particular order, for beginners and club players alike.
Chess engines have been stronger than people for years, but an engine on its own isn't much of a teacher. It tells you a move is a blunder without telling you why, and that's where most improving players get stuck. AI coaches try to fill that gap by explaining the idea behind the move.
The nine below are listed alphabetically and in no particular order. I read each description on the tool's own website or App Store listing this week. A few are built for complete beginners, and others for players stuck on a rating plateau. If you like chess puzzles as well, my piece on how chess-based puzzle games sharpen your thinking is a fun side read.
AI chess coaches at a glance
I checked the free plan column on each tool's own website or App Store listing, as of Oct 2026. Yes means the page names a free plan, a free version, a free account or free use. Trial only means a time-limited trial. Not stated means the page I read named neither, so check the tool's own site before you sign up.

Where an AI coach belongs
This matters if you play rated games. The FIDE Laws of Chess, in Article 11.3.1, say that during play the players are forbidden to use any notes, sources of information or advice, or analyse any game on another chessboard. Online platforms have their own fair play rules built on the same idea.
So an AI coach belongs in your training time and your review after the game, never open in another tab while you're playing. Used that way, it's one of the quickest ways to improve.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
Another sport where feedback on every move matters is covered in golf swing analyzers.
A simple training routine
- Play a few games at a time control you enjoy.
- Review each loss with the coach and find the one move that turned it.
- Ask why that move was a mistake until the explanation makes sense to you.
- Practise the positions the coach builds from your mistakes.
- Play again and watch for the same pattern.

Beginners, improvers and returning players
If you're a beginner, choose a coach that teaches while you play and keeps the language simple. If you're an improver stuck at the same rating, choose one that reads your own games and finds the patterns you keep repeating. And if you're coming back to chess after years away, start with guided courses before you jump into analysis.

My plain advice on choosing a chess coach
Pick the coach that explains things in a way you understand, because that's what turns a lost game into a lesson. Connect it to the account where you play most, review your losses rather than your wins, and keep it closed while a game is on.

Frequently asked questions
What is an AI chess coach?
It's an app that reviews your games, explains why moves were good or bad in plain language and builds practice from your own mistakes.
Can an AI chess coach help me improve my rating?
It can help you find and fix the patterns that lose you games, which is how most players improve. You still need to practise what it shows you.
Is it cheating to use an AI chess coach?
Not when you use it for training and reviewing finished games. Using any advice or analysis during a game breaks the FIDE Laws of Chess and online fair play rules.
Do AI chess coaches work with Chess.com and Lichess?
Several apps here connect to your online accounts and read your past games, so check each tool's own page for the platforms it supports.
Is there a free AI chess coach?
Some tools here name a free plan or free lessons on their own page, while others offer a trial, so check the free plan column first.
