DaFont's Stencil, Army category is the biggest free source, with 503 fonts when I checked and 103 passing its completely free or open licence filter, led by Tenada, Capture it and Stencilia. For business use, Google Fonts has open source stencils such as Black Ops One, Stardos Stencil, Allerta Stencil and Big Shoulders Stencil, and Font Squirrel's stencil list has 27.
Stencil letters have those little gaps (bridges) that hold the centre of an O or an A in place when you cut them out. They're the look of army crates, shipping labels, workshop signs, coffee roasters and streetwear. They also work for real stencils you cut and spray, which is why makers with cutting machines search for them so often.
DaFont: the most stencil fonts in one place
DaFont files these under Fancy, then Stencil, Army. On 28 October the category held 503 fonts, and its filter for completely free plus Public domain, GPL or OFL left 103. Stencil is one of the better categories for licences, because several of the most popular fonts are free to use.
| Font | Designer | Licence shown |
|---|---|---|
| Tenada | Tenada | Public domain, GPL or OFL |
| Capture it | Magique Fonts | Completely free |
| Gunplay | Typodermic Fonts | Personal use |
| Stencilia | Manfred Klein | Completely free |
| Army Rust | Jayde Garrow | Personal use |
| Top Secret | Magique Fonts | Completely free |
| Stencilla | Otto Maurer Design | Demo |
The heavyweight here is Capture it, with over 5.6 million downloads, and it's labelled completely free. Other completely free stencils worth a look are Butler Stencil, Boston Traffic, Old Stamper, Take Cover, AG Stencil, HVD Peace and DIN Schablonierschrift, while USSR Stencil is listed under Public domain, GPL or OFL.
Font Squirrel: read the icons before you embed
Font Squirrel only lists fonts it believes are free for commercial desktop use, and its Stencil classification showed 27. That doesn't mean all 27 work everywhere. Its four icons cover commercial graphics, website embedding, ebooks and PDFs, and apps, and only 14 of the stencils had all four.
Thirteen couldn't be embedded in an ebook or PDF, including Anaphora, Binaria, DeStencil and Milka. Four (Octin Prison, Octin Spraypaint, Octin Stencil and This) were marked for desktop graphics only. If you're making a printable or a downloadable PDF to sell, that difference matters. Black Ops One, Capture it, Top Secret, Boston Traffic and Stardos Stencil were all marked for all four uses.
Open source stencils on Google Fonts
Every family in Google's own font list is flagged open source, and the stencils each have a clear personality in their own descriptions:
- Black Ops One: inspired by military stencil lettering, and its notes say it looks best at medium to large sizes because of the small cuts.
- Stardos Stencil: a stencilled serif, designed for display use only.
- Allerta Stencil: built from Allerta, a typeface made for signage that's easy to read from a distance.
- Big Shoulders Stencil: part of a condensed family made for the Chicago Design System, with nine styles and a variable weight.
- Sirin Stencil: a humanist sans with brush-inspired detail, whose gaps merge at small sizes.
- Emblema One: inspired by UK Victorian bold italic display type, built with an unusual stencil construction.
- Saira Stencil: added to Google Fonts in April 2026, with 18 styles and adjustable width and weight.
When a design needs calmer body text, classic serif fonts balance it out.
Can you use a free stencil font for your business?
With an open source font, yes. The OFL FAQ lists logos, posters, signage, T-shirts, laser-cut shapes and even rubber stamps among the uses that need no extra permission, which covers most of what people make with stencils. The one thing you can't do is sell the font file on its own.
With a DaFont font marked personal use, such as Gunplay or Army Rust, check first. DaFont's FAQ says the label on the page is only an indication, so read the readme in the zip or the designer's site, and contact them if in doubt.
Sports jerseys and shipping crates often share bold lettering, as varsity fonts show.

Cutting a stencil you can use
- Pick a font with clear bridges, such as Black Ops One or Capture it, and set it big. Small cuts tear or clog.
- Check every letter you'll cut, especially O, A, B, D, P, R and numbers, so the centres don't fall out.
- Weld or group the letters in your cutting software only after you're happy with the spacing.
- Cut a test word on scrap material before you commit the good sheet.
- Keep the font's licence line with the file if the stencil is for a product or client.

My advice
Stencils are a style where you can be choosy, because the free options are strong. For products, signs and anything you'll print in PDF, start with Black Ops One or Capture it, both cleared for all four uses on Font Squirrel. For a website heading, Big Shoulders Stencil or Allerta Stencil will stay readable. Leave Gunplay and Army Rust for personal projects unless you buy a licence from the designer.

Bigger is safer. Black Ops One's own notes say it looks best at medium to large sizes because of the small cuts, and tiny bridges can tear when cut.
