TikTok doesn't send you an alert when someone blocks you, so you have to read the signs. If their profile no longer shows up when you search their username, you can't open their videos and you can't message them any more, a block is the most likely reason. TikTok's own help says a block stops both people seeing each other's posts, finding each other in search and sending direct messages.
I get why this one nags at people. You notice a name has gone quiet, you go looking, and there's nothing there. Before you decide you've been blocked, it's worth knowing exactly what TikTok says a block does, because a couple of other things can look very similar from your side of the screen.
What TikTok says happens when someone blocks you
TikTok's help page on blocking is short, but it's specific. Here's what changes between the two accounts, and what doesn't:
| After a block | What TikTok's help says |
|---|---|
| Their posts | You can't view each other's posts |
| Search | You can't find each other's profiles in search |
| Direct messages | You can't exchange direct messages |
| Notification | The person who's blocked isn't notified |
| Follows | Any prior connection between you is removed |
| Places you might still cross paths | Multi-host LIVE, Duets posted by other people, and shared group chats |
That last row matters. If you still see someone pop up in a group chat you're both in, or in somebody else's Duet, that doesn't prove you haven't been blocked. TikTok says those are exactly the spots where blocked accounts can still appear.
4 signs that someone has blocked you on TikTok
Work through these in order. One sign on its own could mean something else. Three or four together is a pretty clear answer.
- Search their username. Type the exact username into search. If you used to find them easily and now nothing comes up, that matches what TikTok says a block does.
- Check your follows. TikTok says any prior connection is removed when someone blocks you. If you followed each other and they've vanished from your Following list without you unfollowing them, that's a strong sign.
- Open your old chat. If you had a direct message thread with them, try sending a message. A block stops you exchanging direct messages, so you won't be able to carry on the conversation.
- Try an old link to one of their videos. If a video you saved or shared before won't open for you, that fits with TikTok's rule that you can't view each other's posts.
Things that look like a block but aren't
A missing profile isn't always about you. A few other things can make an account disappear from your searches:
- The account has gone. If someone deletes or deactivates their account, or TikTok removes it, nobody can find it, not just you.
- They removed you as a follower. That's a much softer step than blocking. You can still find them and see their public videos; you've just been taken off their followers list. I've explained how that works in my guide to removing followers on TikTok.
- They changed their username. If you're searching an old handle, you won't find the new one. Try searching their display name instead.
The simplest cross-check is to ask a friend to search the same username. A block only works between the two accounts involved, so if your friend can see the profile and you can't, that points to a block rather than a deleted account.
What you can do if you've been blocked
Not much, and that's by design. TikTok built blocking so the person who blocks stays in control. There's no request button and no way to message them from your side. Here's what is in your hands:
- Leave it. Making a second account to get around a block is the kind of thing that turns a quiet block into a report.
- Report anything harmful. If the block came after someone was abusive to you, TikTok says to report accounts that break its Community Guidelines. My guide on how to report someone on TikTok walks through it.
- Use your own controls. TikTok's help suggests browsing only your Friends tab and Following feed, tightening your direct message settings, turning off notifications and using Restricted Mode if you want a calmer feed.
If you run a business account and a customer blocks you
This happens more than people admit. A customer has a bad day, leaves an angry comment, then blocks the brand. My advice is simple: don't chase them on TikTok. You won't be able to message them anyway. If they're a real customer, reach them through the channel they bought through, like email or your shop's messages, and sort the problem there. Your public reply to the original comment, if it's still up, is what other customers will read, so keep it calm and helpful.

How to block or unblock someone yourself
If you're on the other side of this and want to block someone, TikTok's steps are:
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
- Go to the person's profile in the TikTok app.
- Tap the Share button at the top.
- Tap Block at the bottom, then tap Block again to confirm.
To unblock, go back to their profile, tap the Share button and tap Unblock. You can also block several people at once from the comments on one of your posts: press and hold a comment, choose Manage multiple comments, select the comments, tap More and then Block accounts. Once you've blocked people, you'll find them all in your blocked list in settings.
Strange behaviour from an account can be a warning sign, as the guide to spotting TikTok scams shows.
My take
If you can't search them, can't see their videos and can't message them, you've most likely been blocked, and TikTok won't confirm it any other way. It stings, but it's a boundary, not a puzzle to solve. Check the other explanations first, then let it go and put your energy into the people who do want to hear from you. If you're curious how other apps handle the same thing, here's how to tell if someone blocked you on Instagram.
Frequently asked questions
Does TikTok tell you when someone blocks you?
No. TikTok's help says people who are blocked aren't notified, so you only find out from the signs: you can't find them in search, can't see their posts and can't message them.
Can you still see someone's videos after they block you on TikTok?
Not on their profile. TikTok says a block means you can't view each other's posts, though you may still see them in multi-host LIVE, Duets posted by other people or shared group chats.
Can you message someone who blocked you on TikTok?
No. A block stops both people exchanging direct messages, so your old chat with them won't let you send anything new.
Will they still follow me after blocking me on TikTok?
No. TikTok says any prior connection is removed when someone blocks you, so you won't follow each other any more.
Is a missing TikTok profile always a block?
No. The account might have been deleted or deactivated, removed by TikTok, or renamed. Ask a friend to search the same username: if they can see it and you can't, a block is the likely reason.
