Where to Get Free Cursive Fonts (2026): Script Fonts You Can Use on Real Projects

For free cursive fonts you can use on real projects, start with the script styles on Google Fonts, such as Dancing Script, Great Vibes, Allura, Sacramento and Pinyon Script, because every family in Google's own font list is flagged as open source. Font Squirrel's script classification is the next safest source, while cursive fonts on DaFont can carry personal use or demo licences.

Cursive and script fonts are the ones people reach for when something needs to feel special: wedding invitations, a boutique logo, a candle label, a certificate. They're also the fonts most likely to be misused, because the prettiest ones online are often free only for personal projects. If you're running a business, the licence matters as much as the loops.

Four places with free script typefaces

Google Fonts script styles

Google Fonts doesn't have a category called cursive. Script fonts sit inside its Handwriting category, which holds 358 families in Google's own font list. Among the most popular script-style families there are Dancing Script, Marck Script, Satisfy, Great Vibes, Yellowtail, Allura, Courgette, Kaushan Script, Sacramento, Pinyon Script, Alex Brush, Tangerine and Parisienne. Every family in the list is flagged as open source.

One detail worth knowing: Dancing Script is a variable font on Google Fonts with a weight axis running from 400 to 700, so you can make it heavier for a headline and lighter for a signature line without switching typeface. Great Vibes and Pacifico, by contrast, come in a single style.

Font Squirrel's script classification

Font Squirrel has a dedicated script classification. Its FAQ says that, as far as it knows, every font on the site has a free desktop licence for commercial use, while being clear it can't guarantee that and asking you to read each licence. That honesty is useful: it tells you to keep the licence file, not just the font.

DaFont

DaFont hosts plenty of fancy calligraphy fonts, and that's also where the licence trap is. Its FAQ says its fonts are freeware, shareware, demo versions or public domain, and that a font with no licence information isn't automatically free. If a font is listed as a demo, treat it as a sample rather than the finished font, and test every letter in a guest's name before you print.

Script fonts in Microsoft 365

Microsoft 365 subscribers get cloud fonts on demand in Office apps, and Microsoft's list includes script styles such as Baguet Script, Brush Script MT and Dreaming Outloud Script Pro. Microsoft says your device must be online, with optional connected experiences turned on in Windows, for the cloud fonts to download.

The catch: cursive fonts and print

The biggest problem with cursive fonts isn't the licence, it's legibility. Thin hairline strokes that look elegant on screen can vanish when printed small or cut in vinyl, and connecting letters can blur together at small sizes. Use a script font for one or two words, such as a name or a heading, and set everything else in a plain font.

The OFL FAQ also has a licence point that matters for script fonts in logos: you can use an OFL font to create a logo, but you can't sell the font file on its own. If a client asks for the font, point them to where it can be downloaded rather than sending the file as part of a paid package.

For a heavier, blackletter look, try free Old English fonts.

Installing a script typeface and testing it

  1. Download the font family from the source and keep the licence file with it.
  2. Unzip the folder if it arrives zipped.
  3. Open the TTF or OTF file and choose install on Windows or Mac.
  4. Restart the app you design in, so it picks up the new font.
  5. Type your real text, including names and numbers, to check every character exists.
  6. Print a test at the final size before you print the batch.

Which script style suits which job

  • Wedding invitations and place cards: a formal, flowing script such as Great Vibes, Allura or Pinyon Script, set large with plenty of space around it.
  • Friendly brands, cafes and kids' products: a rounder, casual script such as Dancing Script, Pacifico or Courgette, which stays readable at smaller sizes.
  • Signature lines and sign-offs: a lighter script such as Sacramento or Tangerine, used for one or two words only.
  • Bold headlines on social graphics: a brush style such as Kaushan Script or Yellowtail, which keeps its shape on a busy photo.

Whichever you pick, type out the longest name or phrase you'll need before you commit. Script fonts vary a lot in how wide they run, and a name that fits neatly in one typeface can spill off the card in another.

My advice

Pick from Google Fonts first. Great Vibes and Allura cover most invitation jobs, Dancing Script works for friendly brands, and Pinyon Script suits anything formal. Keep the licence with your files, test the font at its real size, and resist using script for more than a few words. One beautiful line in cursive looks premium. A whole paragraph of it looks like nobody wanted you to read it.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I get free cursive fonts?

Google Fonts has script styles such as Dancing Script, Great Vibes, Allura, Sacramento and Pinyon Script, all open source. Font Squirrel's script classification and DaFont have more, but check each licence.

Are cursive fonts on Google Fonts free for commercial use?

Every family in Google's own font list is flagged as open source, and the OFL FAQ says OFL fonts can be used in logos, posters and products. You can't sell the font file by itself.

What's the difference between cursive and script fonts?

Google Fonts doesn't use the word cursive. Its script-style fonts sit in the Handwriting category, which is where you'll find joined-up, calligraphy and brush styles.

Why does my cursive font look broken when printed?

Thin hairline strokes can disappear at small sizes or in cutting, and joined letters can blur. Use script fonts for short headings and print a test at the final size first.
