If you're looking for Saved info in Gemini, the current help pages put these settings under Personal Intelligence. Go to gemini.google.com, click Settings and help, then Personal Intelligence, then Instructions for Gemini to add rules for every chat. Asking Gemini to remember specific facts needs a Google AI plan and is US only for now; instructions are open to everyone.
That split is why so many people can't find what they're looking for. There are now three parts to personalisation in Gemini: instructions you write, facts Gemini remembers when you ask, and memory of your past chats. Each has different rules. Here's how they work, from Google's own Gemini help pages, checked as of October 2026.
The three kinds of Gemini memory
| Feature | What it does | Who can use it |
|---|---|---|
| Instructions for Gemini | Rules applied to every chat, like format or tone | All users |
| Remembering specific info | Facts you ask Gemini to keep, like a birthday or a preference | Google AI plan, personal account, Memory on, US only for now |
| Memory of past chats | Gemini learns from your previous conversations | Personal account with Keep Activity on |
None of these work on a work, school or supervised Google Account. Google says you must be signed in with a personal account.
Google's personalisation hub also lists a fourth source: content and activity from Google apps you connect to Gemini. Google says these features aren't available to everyone yet, so don't worry if your settings screen looks different from a friend's. It's usually your country, your account type or your plan, not something you've switched off by mistake.
How to add instructions for Gemini
- On your computer, go to gemini.google.com.
- At the bottom, click Settings and help, then Personal Intelligence, then Instructions for Gemini.
- Enter the instructions you want Gemini to apply to every chat.
- Come back to the same screen to view, edit or delete them.
- Use the switch at the top to turn Instructions for Gemini off or on.
Google's own examples give you a feel for what works: start every response with a short summary, use bullet points for long paragraphs, or always include review scores when recommending films. For a business, I'd add instructions like these:
Copy these instructions
Write in British English. Keep answers short and plain. When I ask for marketing copy, give me three options and say which one you'd pick and why.
How to make Gemini remember a fact
Where it's available, you just tell Gemini in a chat. Google's examples include "Remember that Ella's birthday is on November 3rd" and "Keep track of this: my annual review is on March 15th." Gemini saves the detail and uses it later when it's relevant. If something changes, correct it in the chat, for example "I switched to evening workouts. Update that."
To use this you need a Google AI plan, a personal account and Memory switched on. Google says it's only available in the US for now, and only in the Gemini mobile app, the web app, Gemini in Chrome where that's available, and Gemini on your smartwatch.
Memory of your past chats
Separately, Gemini can learn from your previous conversations if you're signed in to a personal account and Keep Activity is on. Google says it isn't used in certain features, such as Gems or Live chats, although in a text chat you can ask Gemini to reference a past Live conversation. With memory on, Gemini may suggest next steps for a project you've mentioned or offer to help plan a trip.
Want to know whether Gemini used your history? Google's tip is to ask it directly: "Did you use any info from past chats?" It's a quick way to understand why an answer feels oddly personal, or why it doesn't.
How to make Gemini forget something
This is the part people get wrong. Google says telling Gemini to forget or avoid a topic doesn't always work perfectly. To make sure it stops mentioning something, delete the chats about it from your Gemini Apps Activity. If you delete a chat, there may be a short delay before Gemini stops using it.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
If the information came from a connected app, such as Gmail or Google Photos, Google says you need to do two things: delete the chats that contain it and disconnect the app. Do only one and Gemini may still find it, either in the old chat or in the connected app. Changes you make inside a connected app may take days to show up in Gemini.
How to stop Gemini learning about you
- Go to gemini.google.com on your computer.
- Click Settings, then Personal Intelligence.
- Turn off the memory features you don't want.
- Delete any past chats you don't want Gemini to use from Gemini Apps Activity.
Instructions vs Gems
Instructions apply to every chat. If you want a different set of rules for one job, such as writing product descriptions, a Gem is the better tool, and my guide to Gemini Gems shows how to set one up. A reusable Gemini prompt template helps too. If you're weighing Gemini against Claude for this kind of personal context, see how Claude and Gemini compare.
My take
Start with instructions, because everyone can use them and they make the biggest difference to everyday answers. Add remembered facts if you're on a Google AI plan in the US. And when you want Gemini to forget something, don't just ask: delete the chats, and disconnect the app if that's where it came from.
