Yes, YouTube TV works on Chromecast, but how it works depends on the model. Older Chromecasts (3rd gen or earlier, and Chromecast Ultra) let you cast YouTube TV from a browser, while Chromecast with Google TV and the Google TV Streamer run it as a built-in app with a Live tab. YouTube warns that a first-generation Chromecast has a higher error rate and can take up to 30 seconds to open.
I see people get stuck here because Chromecast is really two different products under one name. One is a little dongle you send video to from another screen. The other is a full streaming box with its own remote and home screen. YouTube TV treats them differently, so the first job is to work out which one is plugged into your TV.
Which Chromecast do you have?
| Device | How YouTube TV works on it | What YouTube and Google say |
|---|---|---|
| Chromecast (1st gen) | Cast from a browser | Still works, but no longer gets software or security updates, has a higher error rate and can take up to 30 seconds to open |
| Chromecast (2nd and 3rd gen) and Chromecast Ultra | Cast from a browser | Supported for casting |
| Chromecast with Google TV (HD or 4K) | YouTube TV app plus a Live tab on the home screen | Linked to YouTube TV automatically when the Google TV account has an active subscription |
| Google TV Streamer (4K) | YouTube TV app plus a Live tab | Same rules as Chromecast with Google TV |
| TVs with Chromecast built-in | Cast from a browser | Listed by YouTube TV as a way to stream to your TV |
If your device came with a voice remote that has a YouTube button, it's a Google TV model. If you can only send video to it from another screen, it's an older cast-only Chromecast.
How to cast YouTube TV to a Chromecast
This is the route for older Chromecasts and TVs with Chromecast built-in. YouTube TV's help page lays it out like this:
- Make sure your computer is on the same Wi-Fi network as your Chromecast.
- Go to YouTube TV in a web browser.
- Choose a show or a channel.
- Click Cast in the video player.
- Pick the device you want to cast to.
- When you're done, click Cast again and choose Disconnect.
YouTube says Chrome gives the best experience for casting, and it wants a connection of at least 3 Mbps. If you're on a Mac running macOS 15 or later and the Chromecast doesn't appear, go to System Settings, then Privacy and Security, then Local Network, and turn it on for your browser. Without that permission your Mac can't see cast devices at all.
Using YouTube TV on Chromecast with Google TV
On the newer models you don't cast anything. YouTube TV shows up on the home screen and in the Live tab, and you pick a channel with the remote. Google's own help page adds a few tips worth knowing:
- The Google TV account on the device must be the same Google account that pays for YouTube TV. That's what links the two.
- You can remap the YouTube button on the remote: press and hold it until YouTube appears on screen, then choose YouTube TV.
- Hold the Google Assistant button on a Chromecast Voice Remote, or the mic button on a Google TV Streamer remote, and say something like "Play ESPN".
- This feature is US only, like YouTube TV itself.
If the Live tab doesn't appear
This is the most common complaint, and it's almost always an account mismatch. Google gives you three ways to fix it:
- Change the primary account on your Google TV device to the one that pays for YouTube TV.
- Move the YouTube TV subscription to your primary account.
- Use Google Family Sharing to link the two accounts.
There's a catch with the third option. Google says recommendations on the device show for the Google TV account on the Chromecast, not for the account that bought YouTube TV. So if you share YouTube TV through a family group, expect the home screen to suggest what the device owner watches.
Controlling YouTube TV with a Google Nest speaker
If you've got a Google Home or Nest speaker or a Nest Hub, you can link it to your Chromecast in the Google Home app and use your voice. YouTube TV lists commands such as "Play MSNBC on YouTube TV", "Play the latest episode of Grey's Anatomy on YouTube TV" and "Record Empire". You need to be signed in to the same Google account on YouTube TV and on the speaker, which matters if you're part of a YouTube TV family group and share the speaker with others.

A handy trick for blocked programs
Some programs on YouTube TV carry a mobile viewing restriction, which means you can't watch them on your phone. YouTube TV says you can still watch them by casting to your TV or using a computer. A Chromecast is the easiest way round that block, so it's worth having one even if your TV has its own YouTube TV app.
A blocked game is a different problem from a casting one, so read why a YouTube TV game won't play.
Casting fixes, in order
- Close and reopen your browser.
- Restart your router, then your computer.
- Update your browser, ideally to the latest Chrome.
- Lower the video quality in the player settings.
- Close the player, reopen it and try again.
If none of that works, YouTube TV points you to its advanced streaming device troubleshooting and then to YouTube TV support. For a home with several screens, it also helps to know how many people can watch YouTube TV at once, which matters when the whole family wants to watch at once.
My verdict
If you're buying something new, get a Chromecast with Google TV or a Google TV Streamer rather than an old cast-only stick. You get the app, the Live tab and voice control, and you're not tied to a laptop. If you already own an older Chromecast, it'll do the job, but a first-gen one is past its support life, so I wouldn't rely on it for match night. Setting up from scratch? Frequently asked questions
Does YouTube TV work on Chromecast?
Yes. You can cast YouTube TV from a browser to older Chromecasts and Chromecast Ultra, and Chromecast with Google TV and the Google TV Streamer run YouTube TV as an app with a Live tab.
Can I use YouTube TV on a first-generation Chromecast?
You can still cast to it, but Google no longer updates it or supports it, and YouTube TV warns of a higher error rate and up to 30 seconds to open.
Why isn't the Live tab showing on my Google TV?
Usually the Google TV account on the device isn't the account that pays for YouTube TV. Switch the primary account, move the subscription, or link the two with Google Family Sharing.
Can I control YouTube TV with Google Home?
Yes, in the US. Link your Chromecast in the Google Home app, sign in to the same Google account, and say commands like Play MSNBC on YouTube TV.
