Is Wolfram Alpha Free? Free Answers vs Paid Step-by-Step

Yes, Wolfram Alpha is free to use for answers, and a free Basic account adds custom settings when you sign in. Step-by-step solutions are not free: Wolfram's pricing page says Basic doesn't include them, and they start with the Pro plan.

That's the line most students hit. You type in an equation, you get the answer free, and the button to see how it was worked out asks you to upgrade. Here's exactly what Wolfram Alpha includes free, what Pro and Pro Premium add and what they cost, all from Wolfram's own pricing page, checked as of October 2026.

What Wolfram Alpha gives you free

You can use Wolfram Alpha in a browser without an account and get computed answers to maths, science, finance and general knowledge questions. If you register, Wolfram calls that a Basic account. Its pricing page describes Basic as free with sign-in and a personalised experience with customisable settings, and it adds in brackets that Basic doesn't include step-by-step solutions.

Wolfram also frames Pro as a way to support the long-term development of Wolfram Alpha as a resource for the world, so the free version you use today is partly funded by the people who pay.

Pro Premium$12.00 a month, or $8.25 a month billed $99.00 annuallyYes3X5MB

What Pro adds

Wolfram describes Pro as enhanced features with step-by-step solutions, more computation time and calculator web apps. The list on the pricing page includes:

  • Step-by-step solutions, plus practice problems with hints.
  • Guided calculators for finance, nutrition and more.
  • Twice the computation time, so bigger problems don't time out as often.
  • File uploads up to 2MB with instant analysis.
  • Customised graphics and downloadable results.
  • Photo input and an enhanced step-by-step view in the iOS and Android apps.
  • Priority support from Wolfram's experts.

Pro Premium includes the same list with three times the computation time, a 5MB upload limit and more guided calculators for personal and professional use.

What else Pro does that people don't expect

Most people think of Pro as the step-by-step button, but Wolfram's About Pro page lists more. You can upload your own data, images and files in 60+ formats for instant analysis, download computed data for spreadsheets and 3D models, customise the look of results for presentations, and use form-based web apps for maths, science and other courses.

Pro also includes Wolfram Problem Generator, which Wolfram describes as an unlimited supply of practice problems, instantly graded, with printable worksheets. For a student revising for an exam, that's often more useful than seeing one worked answer.

The Wolfram Alpha apps for iOS and Google Play are free to download, and Wolfram says Pro users get extra features in them, including photo input and step-by-step solutions. So you don't need a separate paid app; you sign in with your Pro account.

Wolfram's student page says Pro covers more than maths and physics, including chemistry, biology, engineering, economics, astronomy and statistics.

The cheapest way to get step-by-step solutions

Here's the detail worth knowing before you pay. The annual Pro plan is billed at $60.00 a year, which Wolfram shows as $5.00 a month against the $9.99 monthly price. Wolfram's page says that saves $59.88 a year. So if you need step-by-step help for a whole school year, annual Pro costs about the same as six months on the monthly plan.

If you only need it for a few weeks around an exam, one or two months of monthly Pro may cost less in total. Work out how many months you'll use it before choosing.

How to get the most from Wolfram Alpha free

  1. Use it without signing in for quick answers and checks.
  2. Register a free Basic account to save your preferred settings.
  3. Use the free answer to check your own working, line by line, rather than to replace it.
  4. If you're stuck on a method, look it up in a free course or textbook before paying for step-by-step.
  5. Upgrade only for the months you need step-by-step, or go annual if you'll use it all year.

Free alternatives for maths help

If step-by-step working is what you're after, other tools give some of it away. I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

Wolfram Alpha's strength is that it computes rather than guesses, so its answers are a good check against an AI chatbot that might get a calculation wrong.

For explanations in plain words, chatbots are the other route, and one hub is checked in the Poe guide.

My verdict: is Wolfram Alpha free?

Yes for answers, no for working. You can use Wolfram Alpha free and register a free Basic account, but step-by-step solutions need Pro, which costs $9.99 a month or $60.00 a year as of October 2026. Pro Premium adds more computation time and bigger uploads for $12.00 a month or $99.00 a year. If you need the steps all year, annual Pro is the best value Wolfram offers.
