Two big free AI chatbots work with no sign up: ChatGPT, which OpenAI says you can use before creating an account in supported countries, and DuckDuckGo's Duck.ai, which says no account is needed. Microsoft Copilot is the confusing one, because its help page says sign in isn't required while its terms of use say you must be logged in.
Using a chatbot without an account is handy when you're on a shared computer, you just want a quick answer, or you'd rather not hand over an email address. But each tool takes something away when you're logged out. Here's what each company says, checked on its own help pages as of October 2026.
The quick comparison
| Chatbot | No sign up? | What you lose without an account |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Yes, in supported countries including Europe and the UK | Chat history, more than one conversation at a time |
| Duck.ai (DuckDuckGo) | Yes, no account required | Advanced models, which need a DuckDuckGo subscription |
| Microsoft Copilot | Unclear: help page says yes, terms say no | Chat history, image creation, longer chats and voice |
ChatGPT without an account
OpenAI's help page says ChatGPT is free to use and can be accessed before creating an account at chatgpt.com. You type your prompt in the box and go. It works in supported countries, including Europe and the UK, but OpenAI says access may vary by location or network, so some people are asked to log in before they can send a message.
The limits are specific:
- You can only have one conversation at a time while logged out.
- You can't save chat history. Chats stay available only for the current session in the same browser.
- If you start a new chat, the previous one is gone.
- If you sign up afterwards, only your latest conversation appears in the sidebar. Earlier ones can't be saved.
That last point catches people out. If a logged-out chat matters, create the account before you close the tab.
Duck.ai without an account
DuckDuckGo says both Duck.ai and its Search Assist answers are free to use and anonymised, with no account required. Duck.ai gives you free access to several third-party models. As of October 2026 its help page lists Anthropic's Claude 4.5 Haiku, Mistral Small 4, OpenAI's GPT-6 Luna and GPT-5.4 mini, plus gpt-oss-120b and Gemma 4 31B hosted by Tinfoil.sh. Bigger models sit behind a DuckDuckGo subscription.
The privacy detail is the reason people pick it. DuckDuckGo says it removes metadata such as your IP address before your prompt reaches the model provider, so requests appear to come from DuckDuckGo. It says it doesn't store your prompts, and that your chats aren't used to train models by DuckDuckGo or the providers. Recent chats are saved on your own device, not on its servers, and you can pin up to five.
Microsoft Copilot without an account
Microsoft's own pages disagree. Its support article on the free Microsoft Copilot says sign in isn't required, but that signing in with a personal account gives you chat history, image creation, longer conversations, voice and other features. Its Copilot terms of use, though, say Microsoft has clarified that you must be logged in with a Microsoft account to use Copilot, and that you need to be at least 13.
So expect a sign-in prompt. If you hit one, Duck.ai or logged-out ChatGPT are the quicker routes.
How to choose a no sign up chatbot
- Need a fast answer on any device? Use ChatGPT logged out, and accept that the chat disappears.
- Care most about privacy? Use Duck.ai, which says it strips your IP address and doesn't store prompts.
- Want to keep the conversation? Create a free account with whichever tool you liked. Logged-out chats can't be recovered.
- Working on anything sensitive? Don't paste client data, passwords or personal details into any chatbot, logged in or not.
Tips for using a chatbot without an account
- Copy anything useful out of the chat before you close the tab. Logged-out ChatGPT keeps chats only for the current browser session.
- Use one browser for the whole task. OpenAI says logged-out chats stay in the same browser, so switching device loses them.
- Pin the Duck.ai chats you want to keep. DuckDuckGo says pinned chats aren't cleared by its Fire Button.
- Expect the odd sign-in wall. OpenAI says access without an account can vary by location or network.
What you give up without signing up
No account means no memory between sessions, no saved history and usually fewer features. For a one-off question that's fine. For anything you'll come back to, like a long piece of writing or a project, a free account is worth it, and you can still use a separate email address if you'd rather keep it apart from your main inbox.

My verdict on free AI chatbots with no sign up
For a quick question, ChatGPT without an account is the easiest start, and Duck.ai is the one I'd point you to if privacy is the reason you don't want to sign up. I wouldn't plan around Copilot as an account-free option while Microsoft's terms say you need to log in.
