What Does Huzz Mean? The -uzz Slang Explained for Parents, Teachers and the Confused

Huzz is slang for a group of girls or women, usually said as 'the huzz'. Dictionary.com says it's an altered form of 'hoes', following the same -uzz pattern as bruzz for bros. It's often used jokingly by teenagers, but it comes from a derogatory word, so many people find it disrespectful to women.

If you've heard a teenager say they did something 'for the huzz', you're not alone in reaching for a dictionary. The word spread fast through streams, TikTok and school corridors. Here's what it means, where it came from, why it lands differently depending on who's saying it, and how to talk about it without sounding like you've never been online.

Huzz in plain English

Dictionary.com defines huzz, or the huzz, as a slang term for a group of girls or women. Merriam-Webster files it as a plural noun meaning online slang for 'women' and adds a small but useful note: it's often preceded by the. So you'll hear 'impressing the huzz' far more often than 'a huzz'.

Dictionary.com also records a second, softer use. Huzz can refer to romantic partners, similar to 'boo'. Merriam-Webster quotes the line 'gaining aura for the huzz' from a YouTube comment dated 30 October 2025. The joke there is someone showing off to get attention from girls.

The -uzz family: bruzz, gruzz and chuzz

Huzz isn't a one-off. Merriam-Webster says it's one of a number of rhyming -uzz words that have gained popularity on social media, each standing for a different group of people. Dictionary.com gives two of its siblings:

WordWho it meansSource
huzzGirls or women, as a groupDictionary.com, Merriam-Webster
bruzzBros, your matesDictionary.com, Merriam-Webster
gruzzGrandparents or elderly peopleDictionary.com
chuzzListed as a related -uzz termMerriam-Webster, Wiktionary

Wiktionary quotes a line that shows the pattern at work: 'Bruzz do anything for the huzz.' It also lists chuzz as a term derived from huzz. Once you know the -uzz trick, most of these words decode themselves.

Where huzz came from

Both dictionaries point to the same person. Dictionary.com says Twitch streamer and YouTuber Kai Cenat is often credited with introducing huzz to the masses. In February 2023, it says, Cenat livestreamed himself teaching an older man to dance, explaining that it was 'for the huzz', and the term then trended on TikTok and other platforms.

Merriam-Webster tells it slightly differently: it says the word is credited to Kai Cenat, who is said to have had a friend say it in a video in 2023, after which it spread like wildfire. Wiktionary adds that the noun originally comes from African-American Vernacular English and records it as an alteration of hoes, from hoe plus the -uzz ending.

It kept spreading after that. Wiktionary cites a November 2024 Dexerto explainer that grouped huzz with online 'brain rot' slang, and a December 2024 track called 'I Was Rizzing Up the Huzz'. If that title makes sense to you, my guide to rizz covers the other half of it.

Why huzz can be offensive

Here's the part that matters most for parents and teachers. The word underneath huzz is 'hoes', and Merriam-Webster says huzz means 'hos/hoes'. Wiktionary labels huzz as slang or humorous, and sometimes offensive.

Dictionary.com puts the tension well. Huzz can be used as a humorous or endearing term among friends, but some also consider it derogatory toward women. In practice, a lot of the teenagers saying it are repeating a streamer catchphrase and haven't thought about the word inside it. That doesn't make it harmless, but it does change how you might start the conversation.

  • Said by friends about themselves, as a joke: often meant playfully.
  • Said about girls in a class or group chat: can feel reducing and disrespectful.
  • Said to a girl directly, or about her body: it's an insult, whatever the intent.

Who's using it

Dictionary.com says members of Gen Z and Gen Alpha use huzz in real life and online to jokingly refer to women. It also notes that adult creators, including a middle school teacher known as Mr. Lindsay, post TikTok videos and Instagram Reels explaining the lore behind huzz and other youth slang. That's a sign of how far it's travelled: teachers are making explainers because pupils are saying it in class.

It sits in the same corner of the internet as skibidi and sigma, meme words that move from streams to playgrounds in weeks.

An older huzz you'll never hear in a group chat

There's a twist for word lovers. Wiktionary records a completely separate, obsolete verb: to huzz meant to buzz or murmur, an imitative word like buzz. It quotes a sermon preached by Hugh Latimer before King Edward VI in 1549, complaining that people walking about during the sermon made such huzzing and buzzing in the preacher's ear that he often forgot his place. It's listed in Webster's dictionary of 1913. Nothing connects that word to today's slang, but it's a nice reminder that short words often have more than one life.

How to talk to a teenager about huzz

Lecturing rarely works, and pretending not to know the word works even less. A calmer approach is to ask what they think it means, then mention the word it comes from. Most teenagers know exactly what 'hoes' means, and many haven't connected the two.

If you're a teacher, it can help to treat it like any other slur-adjacent slang: the intent might be a joke, but the effect on the girls in the room is what counts. And if you run a brand account aimed at young people, don't use it. Borrowing a word that some of your audience finds derogatory is the fastest way to look out of touch and offend the people you're trying to reach.

Messages and comments are full of shorthand, and the cooked meaning page decodes one of the common ones.
