What Does JS Mean? Just Saying in Texts, JavaScript in Code and a Few Surprises

JS in a text means 'just saying'. Dictionary.com says JS is short for 'just sayin'' and is used to put emphasis on a stated opinion or fact. People add it at the end of a comment, as in 'that's the third time this week, js'. In coding and tech, JS means JavaScript, the language that runs most interactive websites.

JS is a tiny sign-off with a lot of attitude. It can be a friendly nudge, a wink or a quiet dig, depending on what comes before it. And if you work anywhere near a website, you'll also see JS meaning something completely different. Here's how to read both, plus a couple of meanings you probably haven't met.

JS means 'just saying'

Dictionary.com's acronym entry, published in May 2018, defines JS as short for just sayin' and says it's used to put emphasis on a stated opinion or fact. Wiktionary lists js in lower case as an acronym of just saying in text messaging, and JS as the capitalised form.

Dictionary.com's examples, all from social posts in May 2018, show the pattern: an opinion, then '#js' or 'Js...' on the end. It's become a hashtag as much as an abbreviation. The JS is the shrug after the point.

The three tones of 'just saying'

  1. The friendly nudge. 'You'd look great with a fringe, js.' A compliment with a suggestion.
  2. The 'I told you so'. 'Third flat tyre this month. Js.' Pointing out a pattern.
  3. The soft dig. 'Some of us were on time, js.' Criticism with an escape hatch.

These are made-up examples. The third one is why JS has a reputation. Adding 'just saying' can make a sharp comment sound like you're only sharing information, when everyone can tell it's a jab. If you've received a JS and felt stung, that's probably what happened.

Is JS passive-aggressive?

It can be. The phrase lets someone make a point and then step back from it. That's fine between close friends who tease each other. With colleagues, clients or people you don't know well, it can read as a dig dressed up as honesty.

If you want to give an opinion openly, there are clearer ways to flag it. IMO says 'this is my view'. NGL says 'I'm being honest here'. Both own the opinion rather than backing away from it.

JS means JavaScript in tech

In coding, JS is JavaScript. Dictionary.com mentions this second meaning, and Wiktionary lists JS as an initialism of JavaScript in computing and on the internet. It's old enough to have history: Wiktionary quotes Usenet posts from the late 1990s and early 2000s in the comp.lang.javascript group, where people were already asking for 'a JS' to validate forms or redirect pages.

You'll also see .js at the end of file names. That's a JavaScript file, and it's why a developer might say 'the JS is broken' when a button stops working. For business owners, it's the code behind menus, pop-ups, forms and tracking tags. If your web person says a page is 'JS heavy', they mean it relies on a lot of JavaScript, which can slow it down.

Other meanings of JS and js

JSJoubert syndrome, a rare genetic conditionWiktionary, medicine
J's or JsPlural of the letter J, or jump shots in basketballMerriam-Webster

The 'just' sense is easy to mix up. Wiktionary notes js can also be a shortening of just, so 'js got home' means 'just got home', not 'just saying got home'. Read the sentence both ways and the right one usually jumps out.

Merriam-Webster's basketball example is a nice one: J's or Js, informal for jump shots, as in a player who 'nailed a J to tie the game'. On sports accounts, 'hitting Js' has nothing to do with opinions or code.

JS, 'just sayin'' and where the phrase came from

Dictionary.com spells the long form 'just sayin'', with the dropped g, and that matters for tone. The clipped spelling is casual and a little cheeky, which is why the abbreviation carries the same mood. Wiktionary records just saying as the meaning behind js, in both lower case and capitals.

You'll sometimes see it written 'jus sayin' or 'just sayin'' in full, especially in older memes and comment threads. All of them do the same job: they mark the end of an opinion and dare you to argue. In hashtags, #js sits next to #facts or #truth on posts where someone's confident they're right.

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

Like 'no offence', it can be used to make a remark seem lighter than the speaker means it. That's useful to know when you're reading one, and worth remembering when you're tempted to type it.

How to reply to JS

If it's friendly, reply to the point. If it's a dig, you've got options: ignore the JS and answer the comment, ask what they mean, or laugh it off. What I wouldn't do is fire one back, because two passive-aggressive messages in a row is how small things become big ones. And in work chats, it's often better to pick up the phone. If the tone feels off, TBF is a handy way to add a fair point without sounding defensive.

JS on brand accounts

I'd use it sparingly, if at all. A playful 'our coffee's better on Mondays, js' can work on a cheeky consumer brand. But in replies to customers, JS can come across as smug, and that's the last impression you want in a complaint thread. Say what you mean and leave the shrug out.

A sharper way of flagging an opinion has its own history, covered in the IMAO explainer.
